TASK SHEET #07

Speech of Pres. Corazon C. Aquino before the Joint Session of the United States Congress,
September 18, 1986

A. Identify five (5) points highlighted by Pres. Corazon Aquino in her speech before the U.S. Congress
on September 18, 1986. Explain their significance.

1. We have swept away absolute power by a limited revolution that respected the life and freedom of
every filipino. “This quote may relate to the People’ Revolution of February 22-25 ,1986. It was a
series of population protest centered in Manila, Philippines, and continued civilization. A
fraudulent play that slowed off the united front of our people at the time .

2 . “ He had willed that the blood drawn with a lash shall not , in my country, be paid by blood drawn by
the sword , but by the tearful joy of reconciliation.” This one of the redeeming qualities that her leader
or president should posses when leading her people, and this is perhaps one of the reason why people
have strongly supported her in her past.

3. “For the nation Ninoy become the pleasing sacrifice that answered their prayers for freedom. “The
torture and death of Ninoy Aquino by the dictator of Marcos was the first point of Corazon Aquino’s
speech.

4.” in buying Ninoy, a whole nation honored him by that brave and selfless act of giving honor. A
country that had lost faith in its future found it in a faithless and brazen act of murder.” After her
husband Ninoy aquino was murdered. She referred to his Husband’s painful dream of freedom for the
Filipinos, which Ninoy Aquino did not witnessed.

5. “Still we fought for honor and, if only for honor, we shall pay “She said, agreeing to pay the debt that
was stolen by Marcos. She emphasized that the fight that they started was not a nonsense one.

B. Write a speech addressed to Corazon Aquino and Benigno Aquino, Jr. it can be a commendation or
criticism of their political contributions to the Philippines. You may also use the speech to raise
questions you would like to ask them.

The only adjective that adequately captures these combo is wonderful.
a respectable couple that are committed to their cause and their nation.
a controlling couple seeking retribution for the wrongdoers.
Today, we need people who not only recognize problems but also act to solve them.
There are numerous accounts of the slaughter, sobs of helpless cries, and hungry, defenseless children throughout the re
volutions of the 20th century.
But what most astonished us was the brave act of a man who is able to distinguish between good and evil and who later
becomes a beacon of hope.
