перекладацької діяльності, завдань та обов'язків перекладачів;
o пізнавальні: введення здобувачів вищої освіти у коло
перекладознавчої термінології, обґрунтування підстав виокремлення
видів і типів перекладу, сфер їх використання/застосування,
ознайомлення із специфікою усвідомленої систематичної
перекладацької роботи з різними типами текстів;
володіти і оперувати термінологічним апаратом перекладознавства;
орієнтуватися в сучасних підходах до вивчення і аналізу різних
аспектів перекладу;
володіти необхідним рівнем розвитку теоретичного мислення для
застосування його для вирішення завдань професійної діяльності;
вміти застосовувати набір дослідницьких інструментів для аналізу
мовленнєвої особистості і мовленнєвої ситуації в процесі перекладу;
володіти когнітивно-дискурсивними уміннями, спрямованими на
сприйняття та породження монологічних і діалогічних текстів як в
усній, так і письмовій формах;
аналізувати проблемні ситуації у сфері фахової діяльності;
аналізувати матеріали сучасних досліджень в галузі лінгвістики,
перекладознавства і теорії міжкультурної комунікації для
самостійного використання;
мати уявлення про взаємозв'язок мови, історії та культури народу,
національно-культурних особливостях країн, мова яких вивчається;
використовувати потенціал мови для досягнення комунікативних
цілей і бажаного впливу в іншомовному контексті;
володіти методами і методиками пошуку, аналізу і обробки
наукових даних з використанням сучасних інформаційних
технологій;
застосовувати методи і прийоми самостійного розв’язання
комунікативних завдань у професійній діяльності.
Дисципліна «Вступ до перекладознавства» логічно пов'язана з курсами
«Вступ до мовознавства», «Історія першої іноземної мови», «Сучасна
українська мова», «Практика перекладу з першої іноземної мови», «Основи

Ukrainian history of translation is today more than one thousand years old. It
began soon after the adoption of Christianity in the tenth century and continues in
ever increasing measure up to the present day. The very first translations, however,
are supposed to have been made several decades before that historical date, namely
as early as 911, when the Kyiv Rus Prince Oleh signed a treaty with Byzantium in
two languages (Greek and then Ukrainian). Regular and uninterrupted translation
activity, which started in the late tenth-early eleventh centuries had continued
almost uninterrupted for some 250 years. According to Nestor the Chronicler the
Great Prince of Kyiv Rus Yaroslav the Wise, "gathered together in 1037 in the St.
Sophia Cathedral many translators to translate books (from Greek) into the (Old)
Slavonic language", which was in those times the language of many ecclesiastic
works and was understood in all Slavic countries. In many translations it contained
local old Ukrainian lexical and grammatical elements.

10
number of terms which keep repeating themselves, and as one keeps translating
the same subject, they become more and more familiar to the translator. One
must, however, have a natural curiosity about many different areas of human
knowledge and activity, and an interest in increasing one's vocabulary in a variety
of related as well as unrelated fields.
Sixth, an effective translator must have a facility for writing or speaking
(depending on whether the method used is writing, speaking, or dictation), and
the ability to articulate quickly and accurately, either orally or in writing. Like
a reporter, a translator must be able to transmit ideas in real time, and in good
understandable language. Translation is a form of writing and speech-making,
and a translator is, in a sense, a writer and an orator.
Seventh, a professional translator must develop a good speed of
translation. There are two reasons for this: First, most clients wait until the last
minute to assign a translation job. As a result, they turn to a translator or a
translation service with what is perhaps the most typical question in this business:
"How soon can you have this job ready for me?" The professional translator has
to be prepared to accept that long job with the short turnaround time, or there will
be no repeat business from that particular client or from most other clients, for
that matter. Secondly, translation is generally paid by the word. The more words
one can translate per hour, the more income one will generate. Translating 50
words per hour can land a translator in the poorhouse. Serious translation starts at
250 words per hour, and can reach as high as 1000 words per hour using word
processing, and close to 3000 words per hour using dictation (the author actually
knows such a translator). High volume translators are the ones who will be the
most successful.
Eighth, a translator must develop research skills, and be able to acquire
reference sources which are essential for producing high quality translation.
Without such sources even the best of translators cannot hope to be able to
handle a large variety of subjects in many unrelated fields. Dedicated translators
are the ones who are always on the lookout for new reference sources, and over
time develop a data bank which can be used in their work.
Ninth, today's translator cannot be a stranger to hardware, software, fax,
modem, the Internet, and the latest developments in all those media. Translation
has become completely dependent on electronic tools. Gone are the days of
handwriting, the typewriter, and all the other "prehistoric" means of
communication. The more one becomes involved in translation, the more one
finds oneself caught up in the latest high-tech developments.
Tenth, a translator who wishes to be busy on a fairly regular basis doing
translation work must carefully consider the fact that certain languages are in
high demand, say, in Washington or in Los Angeles, while others are not. Thus,
for example, there is high demand for Japanese, German, Spanish, French,
Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Italian in both Washington and Los Angeles, but
not nearly as much for Bulgarian, Farsi, Czech, or Afrikaans. If your language falls
within the second group, it is extremely advisable to also have language expertise
11
in one of the languages of the first group, or to seriously consider whether your
particular language has enough of a demand to warrant a major investment of
time and effort on your part. One should always check and see what kind of a
potential one's language specialty has in a given geographic area.
The above ten points are the essential criteria for developing a translation career.
There are many other considerations, but none as important as these. If you feel
that you can meet all of the above criteria, then you should continue reading this
handbook and putting it to good use.

Завдання 1. Виконайте реферативний переклад тексту, зосередивши свою
увагу на особливостях роботи перекладача з науково-технічними текстами.
Translator is supposed to know languages plus the topic discussed, i.e. the
subject matter. When translating social and political materials, it is necessary to
know politics, political atmosphere and other factors, characteristic to the country,
where the material to be translated is created, the epoch, it was written.
Translator of scientific and technical texts should have certain knowledge
about this subject: biology, physics, astronomy and engineering.
Once again we would love to underline, that sometimes neither vocabulary,
nor grammatical constructions will help us to understand the text, but our
background knowledge alone. Only one example: in a scientific text the translator
came across the following expression:
... investigation of microdocument storage system using fractional
wavelength optical reading methods.
This sentence has two translations:
1) Дослідження системи зберігання мікродокументів, в якому
використовуються оптичні методи зчитування фракційної довжини хвилі.
2) Дослідження системи зберігання мікродокументів, що використовує
оптичні методі зчитування фракційної довжини хвилі.
This expression is a bright example of the so called syntactical or structural
ambiguity. The adverbial participle using can either be attributed here to the word
investigation, or the word system. Only in case we know well the subject we'll
translate correctly, because none of the formal grammatical indicators are helpful
here. The expert can figure out, which of two possible interpretations is admissible.

Present-day English abounds in asyndetic noun clusters which are very often
used in newspaper and scientific matter/texts. They are word-groups consisting of
two, three or more nouns (functionally equivalent to word-groups) like yarn
production, yarn production figures, the House of Commons debate, mother and
child care.
23
Irrespective of the number of components in these clusters or their structure,
they are always in subordinate relation to each other, i.e., they function as adjunct
(attributive component) and head (nucleus). The former occupies the left-hand
(initial) position and the latter - the right-hand (closing) position in the cluster. The
subordinate relation between the parts of the binary asyndetic substantival cluster
can be graphically presented as follows: yarn →production, the House of Commons
→debate, mother and child →care.
The semantic interrelation between the componental parts in asyndetic noun
clusters may often be rather complicated. It goes without saying that each lexeme
in the asyndetic substantival clusters adds some new meaning to its general
semantic structure. Hence, the more lexemes the cluster consists of, the more
unlike the other ways of approach to its translating there may be.
As has been pointed out, there may be various approaches to rendering the
lexical meaning of asyndetic substantival clusters. These approaches are
predeterminated by the following main factors:
1) by the number of nouns making up the cluster;
2) by the structure of the adjunct and head (or both these components);
3) by the semantic relations between the constituent parts of the asyndetic
substantival cluster which may be local, temporal and others by nature;
4) by the presence or absense of the preceding adjective, participle, possessive
pronoun or ordinal numeral.
Besides, a quick and correct rendering of meaning of any type of asyndentic
substantival clusters mostly depends on the choice of the right component (or its
part) from which the translation has to be translated.

Janice and John, her husband, had always wanted to go ballooning at the festival,
but they thought that such a trip was beyond their reach. She was walking on air
when she telephoned John to tell him the good news. At first, John thought that
Janice was joking and full of hot air, but when he realized that she was not
building castles in the air, his annoyance vanished into thin air. As soon as John
came home from work, Janice and John eagerly talked about the trip. Soon their
plans grew by leaps and bounds. Janice's head was in the clouds all the time
because she was anticipating the trip and her first balloon ride.
Two weeks before the trip, Janice was rushed to the hospital. After
examining her, the doctor burst her bubble when he said that she would need an
operation. The doctor's decision went over like a lead balloon. Janice was
devastated. Now their balloon vacation was up in the air. She knew that without
the free tickets, the cost of the trip would be sky high. But Janice was lucky. The
operation was not serious, and she begged the doctor to let her go on the trip. One
week later, Janice and John took their dream trip. They were on cloud nine as
their balloon rose into the blue sky. Janice smiled and thought: sometimes it pays
to reach for the sky.

In linguistics, where definitions at best are often imprecise and leaky, that of
slang is specially notorious. The problem is one of complexity, such that a
definition satisfying to one person or authority would seem inadequate to another
because the prime focus is different. Like the proverbial blind men describing an
elephant, all correctly, none sufficiently, we tend to stress one aspect or another of
slang speakers.
The external and quantitative aspects of slang, its sociolinguistics, have been
very satisfactorily treated, nowhere, more so than in Stuart Berg Flexner's
masterful preface to the Dictionary of American Slang.
Recorded slang emerged, as the sketch of dictionaries has shown, from the
special languages of subcultures, or perhaps we should call the more despised of
them "undercultures". The group of those people most persistently has been the
criminal underworld itself, including the prison population, whose "cant" or
"argot" still provides a respectable number of unrespectable terms. Other
undercultures contributing heavily are those of:
hoboes and gypsies
soldiers and sailors
the police
narcotics users
gamblers
all sorts of students
show-business workers
jazz musicians and devotees
athletes and their fans
railroad and other transportation workers
immigrant or ethnic populations cutting across these other subcultures.

our major variety. That is, the old disreputable groups will blend gradually into the
mass, and slang will become more a matter of individual wit and self-
advertisement, with its sources no more apparent than those of, say, a dirty joke. In
fact it may be conjectured that even now the strong influence of black slang and
gay slang has less to do with those subcultures per se than with the fact that both
put a very high premium on verbal skill. Blacks, for example, are particularly
given to rhyme and other prosodic features that seem to be increasingly prominent
in slang.

Antonymic Translation
This type of transformation means that a certain word is translated not by a
corresponding word of TL but by its antonym, with negation being added at the
same time (or, if there is negation in the original sentence, it is omitted in
translation):
It wasn’t too far. - Це виявилось досить близько.
I’ve lost her. - Я її не зберіг.
The necessity for this transformation arises due to several reasons:
1. peculiarities of the systems of SL and TL;
2. contextual requirements;
3. traditional norms of TL.
Double negation frequently occurs in scientific-technical literature and
colloquial expressions:
