01
DEFINITION
Corrosion
Corrosion is a redox reaction between a metal and
various substances in its environment which
produces unwanted compounds.
Corrosion is also known as rust, ‘perkaratan’
The most common example of corrosion
is the corrosion of iron

CORROSION
PROCESS
Corrosion Process
In the corrosion process, metal is oxidized, while oxygen (air) is reduced. Metal rust is
generally an oxide or carbonate. The chemical formula for iron rust is Fe2O3.xH2O, a
red-brown solid
Corrosion is an electrochemical process. In the corrosion of iron, a certain
part of the iron acts as the anode and undergoes ovxidation
Fe(s) → Fe2+(aq) + 2e- Eo = + 0,44 V
Corrosion Process
The electrons liberated at the anode flow to another part of the iron which
acts as the cathode. In this process oxygen is reduced.
O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e- → 4OH-(aq) Eo = + 0,40 V
or
O2(g) + 4H+(aq) + 4e- → 2H2O(l) Eo = + 1,23 V
