Globally, green buliding rating systems are largely voluntary in ature and have been instrumental in raising awareness and popularizing green building designs. BREEAM major categories of criteria for Design and Procurement + Management (commissioning period and process adopted, monitoring of commissioning, energy use in site activities, waste management, pollution ‘inimization) + Health and comfort (adequate ventilation, humidifeation, presence of controllable binds, energy efficient lighting, thermal and visual comfort, ow noize levels) + Energy (sub-metering) + Transport (modes of transport to and from site, alternative transport facilities) + Water (consumption reduction, metering, leak detection) + Materials (asbestos mitigation, storage faites, reuse of structures, specifiations of envelope, use of crushed aggregate and sustainable timber) + Land use (previously used land, use of re mediated contaminated land) + Ecology (land with low ecological value or minimal change in value, ‘maintaining major ecological systems on the impacts) + Pollution (leak detection systems, onsite treatments local or renewable ‘energy sources, ight polltion design, void use of ozone depleting and global ‘warming substances) ‘minimization of biodiversity Successful International Rating Programs: CASBEE ‘Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Eficiency (CASBEE) was developed in Japan, in 2001, ‘The family of assessment tools i based on the building's life cycle pre-desien, new construction, existing buildings, and renovation. “CASBEE presents a new concept for assessment that distinguishes environmental load from environmental quality and building performance, + Under CASBEE there are two spaces, internal and external, divided by the hypothetical boundary, whichis defined by the site boundary and other elements, With two factors related tothe two spaces, in which the 1 ‘Negative aspects of environmental impact which go beyond the hypothetical enclosed space to the outside (the public property)’ 2 ‘Improving living amenity forthe building users’ are considered side by side. Successful International Rating Programs: GBTool + GBTool was developed by the International Framework Committee for the Green Building Challenge, an international project that has involved more than 25 countries since 1998. + GBTooIis designed to be adapted by sponsors to reflect regional conditions and context. Itincludes criteria in categories > Ste lacton, Devetooment vonmental Logs; very and Resource Consumption; Indoor Erionmentl Quality Fnctonay, > Socal end Eonomi pect. + Criteria are assessed using scales that are based on local benchmarks of ‘typical practice; + Buildings can score ~1 if below typical practice or from +1 to +5, representing good to very high performance. All criteria must be attempted, GBTool Major Categories of Criteria + Energy consumption is assessed through > Total use of non-enewable eneay (embodied and operational), elec demand, > Usoge of eneuabie ener, > commisionng + Resource consumption is assessed through 2 Materials use (sohaged recycled, bo-based and sustainably harvested cally produced, designed for dnasembly, re-ue, or eyeing) > "Woter use for rgstion, > Building systems > cccupant use + Environmental loadings include > GHG emissions, > other atmospheric emission, > solid wastes > ‘Steimpacts > other oe Successful International Rating Programs: LEED + Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED*) was developed and piloted in the US in 1998 as a consensus-based building rating system based on the use of existing building technology. + The rating system addresses specific environmental building related impacts using a whole building environmental performance approach. Key Components of the LEED System + Sustainable sites (construction related pollution prevention, ste development impacts, transportation alternatives, storm water management, heat island effect, and Fight polltion) + Water efficiency (landscaping water use reduction, indoor water use reduction, and waste water management stategies) + Energy and atmosphere (commissioning, whole building energy performance ‘optimization, refrigerant management, renewable energy use, and measurement and verification) + Materials and resources (cycling collection locations, building reuse, construction waste management, nd the purchase of regionally manufactured ‘material, materials with recycled content, rapidly renewable materials, salvaged ‘materials, and FSC certied wood product + Indoor environmental quality (environmental tobacco smoke control, ‘outdoor air delivery monitoring, increased ventilation, construction indoor ai quality, ‘se low emitting material, source contol and controllability of thermal and lighting systems) * Innovation and design process (LE£0* accredited profesional, and Innovative strategies for sustainable design)
