Organ donation is the donation of biological tissues or an organ of the human body, from a
living or dead person to a living recipient in need of transplantation. Organ transplantation is the

LET’S INQUIRE!
Activity 1. Expound your answers on the following questions.

1. Discuss the two moral principles in embryonic stem cell research

The key ethical issues concern the destruction of human embryos for stem cell derivation. On
the grounds that the human embryo is a human life with moral value justifying its protection, the
extraction of embryonic stem cells is unethical.

2. Explain the ethical dilemmas in organ donation

Brain death and cadaveric organ donation for transplantation present many challenges to
society and even to the medical community; therefore, an ethical and legal framework is
mandatory. Social values, death taboo, ignorance and procrastination  are often issues that can
influence the act of organ donation.

Activity 1. Based on the subject matter presented, in conclusion accomplish the item:

Critical Thinking and Rationalization Skills

Stem cell research holds great potential for better medical treatments and cures but is also
plagued with controversies related to sourcing of embryonic stem cells, ethical debates about
the personhood of embryos, and fears due to misconceptions about the processes of stem cell
research and treatment in general. As part of the medical team, express your concern
regarding the sourcing of stem cells.

For me, as part of the medical team, I would recommend the sourcing of embryonic stem
cells to replace any damaged part of the human body such as missing insulin-making
cells in people with Type 1 diabetes to brain cell lost in Parkinson’s disease or skin cells
scarred by burns. It is for the betterment of the other patients who needs stem cells
because their ability to differentiate and multiply, embryonic stem cells were thought to be
the most powerful, and thus have the most potential for treating injury and disease.
