Digital Assignment 1

Slot: G2+TG2 Fall 2022-2023 Dr. Ramesh R

1. A baseband signal having maximum frequency of 40 KHz is required to be transmitted

using a digital audio system with a sampling frequency of 44.1 KHz. Estimate the
frequency components available at the output.
2. What is aliasing? How to overcome it?
3. In flat top PAM signals, the high frequency contents of the analog signal are lost which
results into distortion. Name the effect and give solution to compensate this effect?
4. Discuss the transmission bandwidth of PCM with mathematical expression.
5. An audio signal, S (t) = 5 cos (2π500t) is quantized using 20 bit PCM. Determine the
signal to quantization noise ratio.
6. Why PCM is considered to have better noise performance?
7. Compare PCM, DPCM and DM in terms of the following parameters. a) Number of bits
per sample. b) Number of levels. c) Step size. d) Quantization Noise. e) Transmission
Bandwidth.
8. Derive an expression PSD of Bipolar NRZ data format.

rectangular pulses for each of the following digital data formats:
a) Unipolar NRZ
b) Unipolar RZ
c) Polar NRZ
d) Polar RZ
e) Manchester.
10. Draw the signaling data waveforms for the binary data sequence
[1 0 1 0 0 1 1 1 0 1 1 0 0 1 1] using the following line encoding techniques:
a) Unipolar NRZ

c) Polar NRZ
d) Polar RZ
e) Manchester.
f) Bipolar NRZ-AMI
g) Bipolar RZ-AMI
h) Differential Manchester.
