Previously, the company did not properly manage or track its scheduled waste. There was a lack of proper labeling, tracking, and storage of the different waste types. KWANG LI INDUSTRY SDN BHD is located at Lot 3651, Batu 27 1/2, Jalan Faizal, 81500 Pekan Nanas, Johor. With a total of 500-600 workers, the company operates from 7.50am until 5.00pm with three breaks in between; breakfast, lunch and tea break. The company provided assembly services for Shimano bicycle components on 1992. On year 2000, obtained ISO 9001 Certificate and on year 2001 Shimano Outstanding Vendor’s. A progressive assembly line is a manufacturing process in which parts are added as the semi-finished assembly moves from workstation to workstation where the parts are added in sequence until the final assembly is produced. We have professional jig, fixture, tool design to eliminate mistake with minimum line balancing loss concept to assembly any product of part. For this assembly service, Kwang Li Industry has 13 production departments. Kwang Li also offered Pad Printing Services. This is accomplished using an indirect offset (gravure) printing process that involves an image being transferred from silicone pad onto a object which as Material Plastic part, Metal part, Aluminium part, Rubber part etc with any colour needed. Kwang Li also offers Laser Marking Services. This is the practice of using lasers to engrave an object which as Material Plastic part, Metal part, Aluminium part, Rubber part etc, and leave marks on an object which have including any colour on the stainless steel object. Overally, Kwang Li Industry consists of 18 departments. There are 13 production departments involved in these assembly services, one laser marking department, one pad printing department, and three supporting departments which are Logistics, Quality Check, Engineering, and Maintenance. Throughout this assembly process, we dispose of five types of waste: SW305, SW322, SW409, SW410, and SW418. Weighing of the waste is done by own department before it is transferred out to the temporary schedule waste storage. The SW 305 is generated from mineral oil that is no longer being used in production. Only one department uses mineral oil, which is Hydraulic Disc Brake Caliper Department. Our company prefer mineral oil compared to other oils due to the fact that it won't damage painted finishes and is less harmful to the environment and the skin. Additionally, mineral oils won't lose their boiling point over time since they don't absorb moisture. SW322 is a waste product generated from cleaning bolts. Our company uses bolts to assemble single parts. But the bolts don't always arrive to us clean, so we decided to use a chemical called SURPAR and do self-cleaning instead. SW409 and SW410 is generated by greasing and printing activities. After the grease and ink is fully used, the empty container are disposed as contaminated container,SW409. In the meantime, the cloth used to clean the rejected printing and excess grease are disposed of as SW410. In the process of cleaning rejected resin pads, SW418 is produced. The resin pads were rejected mainly because the bonding was out of specification. Since the resin pad has been combined with glue, thinner was used to clean it. It is disposed of as SW418 when diluted ink is combined with thinner. 1.2 Situation before course attendance There are many challenges in handling the schedule waste. The schedule waste was managed solely in accordance by notes, and it was transported manually to the waste transporter. Even though the system exists, but it is not properly understood or used. Also, the schedule waste was handled incorrectly from the first generation until disposal. There is no ID on the first generation of waste generated, no information on when the date was generated, no information about the waste generator, and no proper weighting of the waste. Throughout the process, there were numerous leaks, and the spills were not properly cleaned up. This is due to all of the waste is mixed together, in one garbage bag. Waste is only wrapped in one layer, making it leak everywhere at the schedule waste site. Lack of knowledge also leads us to dispose the waste using wrong code. There is no registered competent person available in the factory who knows how the waste should be handled. The schedule waste was previously stored in an unlocked chemical storage, and sharing the same space with incoming chemicals. There are a lot of people going in and out of the storage every day, leaving the doors open. Because the chemical storage area is easily accessible, no one takes responsibility for spills that occur. Also, some workers smoked during the break behind the chemical storage areas. Additionally, there were no warning signs for hazardous materials on the schedule waste storage. For all waste types, there is no waste card currently in existence, and all chemical types lack access to the MSDS. Additionally, the chemicals MSDS are stored for more than five years. CHAPTER 2: ENVIRONMENT MAINSREAMING TOOLS
2.1 Organization Environmental Commitment
2.1.1 Environmental Policy The new environmental policy was developed by the company on 13 September 2022. We are implementing the new policy since we intend to complete the ISO 9001:2015 certification in December 22. The implementation of the policy starts immediately in the third week of September. Countless briefing were given to all levels, and audits were implemented to see which departments who still failed to follow the instruction. The audit findings were then published in the monthly mass assembly to all staff, as well as the face and ID’s of the related person who still failed to follow.
