The Earth has two types of movements that cause changes: rotation, where it spins on its axis once every 24 hours causing day and night, and revolution, where it orbits the Sun once every 365 days causing seasons as it revolves. The Earth's axis is an imaginary line it spins on, and its revolution around the Sun in a fixed orbit along with the Moon's revolution around Earth are responsible for establishing years and seasons on Earth.

Unit (10) The movement of the Earth The Earth has two types of movements 1. Rotation 2. Revolution Both of the movements cause interesting changes on Earth. Axis: It is the imaginary line (is not really line) on which the Earth spins. Rotation The Earth spins on its axis in an anticlockwise direction. This movement is called rotation. Day and night At any time, only half of the Earth is in sunlight and the other half is in shadow. The Earth takes 24 hours to rotate once on its axis. This period is called a day. Revolution The movement of the Earth around the Sun is called revolution. Revolution is a movement in which an object moves around another object. The Moon revolves around the Earth in a fixed path called an orbit. Year The Earth completes one orbit around the Sun in approximately 365 days. This period called a year. Seasons The year is divided up into the four seasons we call spring, winter, summer, and autumn. As the Earth orbits the Sun, the seasons change. HW A, B, C, D (1) & (2)
