Identification Marking of Components
Part 3: Serial Number - Identification of Revision Status
To replace version 2006-03

Check standard for current issue prior to usage

The English translation is believed to be accurate.
In case of discrepancies the German version shall prevail.

Modifications compared to 2006-03:

• Adding of the „Identification of Revision Status“ chapter (see chapter 3 et seq.)

Earlier versions:
2006-03

1 Field of application and purpose

Identical components are provided with consecutive serial numbers. In combination with the respective part
number the serial number allows individual components to be clearly identified and specifically traced, the latter
being of particular importance during development and in motorsport (regarding running times, for example). By
indicating the revisions carried out the history of a given component is made more transparent.
For certain components serial numbers are compulsory as stipulated in „Qualitätsrichtlinie für Entwicklungsteile“
(Quality Guidelines for Development Components“).

2 Composition and representation of a serial number

The components are numerically counted from „101“ to „99999“. Preceding zeros are permissible, provided that
there is sufficient space available (e.g. „00101“). It is the Supplier’s responsibility to make sure that each number
within a given delivery period is indicated clearly and without ambiguity. It is not necessary, however, for the serial
numbers of different delivery charges to be consecutive and without gap.
The numerical count continuous through revision statuses. It restarts with “101” only if a modification occurs within
the first 11 digits of the part number.
Each group of digits is preceded and ends with the sign „#“ to make clear that this is a serial number (e.g.
#00184#). If possible, the serial number should directly follow the part number. Where this is excluded for reasons
of space the serial number is to be placed directly below the part number.
The part number shall be combined with the revision status and/or development sample version both of which are
4-digit numbers composed as follows: „ASnn“ for revision statuses and „EMnn“ for development samples with „nn“
being the numerator from 00 to 99.

3 Identification of revisions
A revision is a process which is precisely defined in respect of content and time. Its purpose is to reestablish the
conformity of a component, assembly or functional unit with the required characterstics. To this end, the
component is subjected to assessment and testing at specified intervals. If required, a non-conforming element is
replaced or reworked to restore its usability/perfect condition and make it safe for another utilisation period.
If a component has to be subjected to a revision, the letter „R“ shall be added to the respective serial number. To
indicate that the revision has been completed, the letter “X” is to be added behind the letter “R”. For each further
revision another “X” shall be added. It is to be made sure that enough space is provided for such extensions of
the serial number.
Example 3: Component for which revisions are being planned:
9R6.343.293.00 AS04 #00127#R

Example 4: Component from example 3 after three revisions have been completed:
9R6.343.293.00 AS04 #00127#RXXX

Any limitation of the number of permissible revisions shall be indicated in the component drawing. In that case, the
serial number of the respective component shall be provided with a corresponding number of circles behind the
letter „R“. After each revision, one of the circles shall be marked with an „X“. Upon having filled all the circles, no
further revisions shall be permissble.

Example 5: New component for which three revisions have been authorized:
9R6.343.293.00 AS04 #00127#ROOO

Example 6: Component from example 5 after two revisions have been completed:
XX
9R6.343.293.00 AS04 #00127#ROOO

4 Marking of components
The marking of components is subject to the specifications laid down in PN 109. The identification number must
be easy to read also after the component has been in operation and therefore shall be applied in a sufficiently
permanent way. The identification number shall be positioned on the component as specified in PN 109.
Both the part number and serial number shall be easy to read in installed condition. Preferably, the serial number
should have the same font and font size as the part number.

5 Drawing inscription
The necessity of using a serial number is to be indicated according to PN 109 and placed above the table:

Serialnummer nach PN 109-3

Indicate serial number acc. to PN 109-3

Requested component revisions are to be indicated as follows:

Serialnummer und Revisionskennzeichnung nach PN 109-3

Indicate serial number and revisions acc. to PN 109-3

If there is a limitation to the number of revisions, the inscription shall read as follows:

Serialnummer nach PN 109-3 (3 Revisionen zulässig)

Indicate serial number and revisions acc. to PN 109-3 (3 revisions permitted)

“Serialnummer nach PN 109-3”

„Indicate serial number
acc. to PN 109-3“
