MATHEMATICS 11
LESSON 8: MEASURE OF CENTRAL
TENDENCY FOR GROUPED DATA
REVIEW
SUMMARY OF KEY IDEAS
Mean for grouped data – the elements in a set of data may be arranged and
grouped resulting in a frequency distribution table.

Median for grouped data – the method for finding the median in the previous
section is applicable when the data are few. In this case the data can easily be
arranged in an increasing or decreasing order.

Mode for grouped data – in a grouped distribution, the class interval where the
value with highest frequency is the modal class. The midpoint of the class interval
is the mode. Where: lbmo – the exact lower unit of the modal
classs.
D1 – the difference between the frequency of the
modal class and that of the frequency below the
modal class.
D2 – the difference between the frequency of the
modal class and that of the frequency above the
modal calss.
i – the size of the class interval.
Example: complete the table below to compute the mean, median, and mode.

examination, Make a frequency distribution table with 10 classes and find the mean,
median, and mode for grouped data.
