Bohai 2 oil rig disaster

➢ Bohai 2 oil rig disaster is rare accident in the history of


offshore oil exploration in the world
➢ Bohai 2 oil rig disaster is sixth most fatal oil rig disaster in
the world
➢ The crude oil produced in this region is mainly heavy oil.
➢ The operational area in Bohai is mainly shallow water with
a depth of approximately 10 to 30 metres.
➢ Location
Gulf of Bohai, between China and Korea
Gulf of Bohai, off the coast of China, on November 25th
1979.
➢ Death
death of 72 out of 76 people onboard the Bohai 2 jack-
up rig when it capsized.
Of the 81 crew, only 36 bodies were recovered

➢ Reason of disaster
As a towing ship moved the Bohai 2 Oil Rig, a storm set in
Fierce winds broke the ventilator pump of the platform,
causing a puncture hole in the deck and extensive
flooding. The resulting loss of stability coupled with
severe weather conditions eventually led to the jack-up
rig capsizing

➢ Reason for Death


1. The accompanying tow boat could not rescue the
crew members, who did not have proper training in
emergency evacuation procedures and the use of
lifesaving equipment.
2. Investigations that followed reported a failure to
correctly stow the Bohai 2 Oil Rig’s deck equipment
prior to towing
3. tow procedures for bad weather conditions were
not followed, possibly because operating
instructions for the Japanese-made rig were not
translated into Chinese until after the incident
