Network Services
I. Introduction to Network Services
o Network service provides data storage, operation, presentation, communication
or other capability, which is frequently executed using client-server or peer-to-
peer architecture.

A. Architecture of Network Services

1. Client-Server Architecture – This is a computing model in which the
server hosts, delivers, and manages most of the resources and services to
be consumed by the client. This type of architecture has one (1) or more
client computers associated to a central server over a network or Internet
connection. This system shares computing resources.
2. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Architecture – Peer-to-peer architecture (P2P
architecture) is a generally used computer networking architecture in
which each computer unit or node has the same functions and
responsibilities. It is often differentiated to the classic client/server
architecture in which computers are committed to serving others.
3. Hybrid of Client-Server and P2P – It is a multiple setup of architecture
considering both Client-Server and P2P Architecture.
II. Services
1. Directory Services – These services are mapping between name and its
importance or value, which can be variable value or fixed.
a. Accounting - In network, users have their usernames and passwords mapped
to them.
b. Authentication and Authorization – User identifications are checked to
authenticate a user at the time of login. User accounts can be set into
hierarchical structure and their access to sources can governed and examined
using authorization schemes.
c. Domain Name Services (DNS) – DNS is widely used and one of the important
services on which internetworks.
2. File Services – This includes sharing and transferring files over the network.
a. File Sharing – It enables its users to share their information with other users.
b. File Transfer - This is an action to copy or move file from one (1) node to
another node, with the help of an underlying network.
3. Communication Services
a. Email - Electronic mail is a communication method and essential to the users.
Email system has one (1) or more email servers.
b. Social Networking – Latest technologies have made technical life social.
c. Internet Chat - This provides instantaneous text transfer services between two
(2) hosts. Two (2) or more people can communicate with each other using
text-based Internet Relay Chat services.

d. Discussion Boards - It provides mechanism to connect multiple individuals with

same interests.
e. Remote Access - This service enables the user to access the data residing on
the remote computer or node. This feature is known as Remote desktop.
4. Application Services
a. Resource Sharing - To use information resourcefully and reasonably, network
provides a mean to share them. This may include servers and printers.
b. Databases - This application service is one of the most essential services.
c. Web Services - World Wide Web has become the synonym for internet.
