POWER PLANT ENGINEERING

Assignment No. 1

Name: Magalindan Gerson R Section: C2

Date: 13/06/21

Direction: Solve the problems using your own handwriting. Make your solution organized
by presenting it according to the order of the required and place your final answers in a
box. Scan your solutions in a PDF format and submit together with the questionnaire.

1. The load on a power plant with respect to the time for 24 hrs. are given as follows:
Time (hrs) 0-6 6-8 8 - 12 12 - 14 14 - 18 18 - 22 22 - 24
Load (MW) 40 50 60 50 70 80 40

Calculate the following:

a. Draw the load curve and compute the load factor of the power plant.
b. If the loads above 60 MW are taken by a stand-by unit of 22 MW capacity, find
the load factor and use factor of the stand-by unit.
c. Considering that the stand-by unit has the following connected maximum
demands (10 MW, 15 MW), find the demand factor.

2. Steam enters the turbine at 6.1 MPa and 373 0C, and exits the turbine at an
exhaust pressure of 2” Hgabs. Turbine efficiency is 78% and Electro-Mechanical
efficiency is 92%. Compute
a. Rankine Cycle Ratio
b. Actual Steam Rate, kg/kW-hr

3. A 4-stroke Diesel engine has 8 cylinders, Bore = 400 mm and Stroke = 600 mm.
During operation, it gave an ISFC = 0.60 lb/hp-hr while running at 280 rpm. The
indicated mean effective pressure is measured to be 130 psi and uses a fuel with
HV = 19,100 BTU/lb. If the jacket water carries away an estimated 25% of the heat
supplied with a 40 0F temperature rise, Calculate a) the Indicated Thermal
Efficiency, % b) the Volume of the required cooling water jacket, gpm.
