“THE TEACHER AS A
CURRICULARIST”

8
My Learning Essential
A curricularist is a professional who is a curriculum specialist. A teacher’s role is
broader and inclusive of other functions and so a teacher is a curricularist. What does it take to be
a curricularist?

Initiator- Initiates the curriculum

Planner- Plans the curriculum
Innovator- Innovates the curriculum
Writer- writes the curriculum
Implementer- implements the curriculum
Knower- knows the curriculum
Evaluator- evaluates the curriculum

9
My Reflections/Insights
How do you perceive your role as a curricularist?
 As a future educator/ curricularist, I prefer the role as a curricularist by means of
exploring such things with regards to the role of a good teacher or curricularist. I will also
let my future students be aware of the content of the curriculum so that they will also
come up with the lesson. I want also to attain nor being aware in the different way or how
to play a role of curricularist.

CURRICULUM”

11
My Reflections
 As I read their answer, even if they are in different field whether student, faculty member,
administrator and parents, they have almost the same answer between the traditional and
progressive curriculum.

My Personal Insights
 The two curriculum has a lot of differences the “Traditional and Progressive Curriculum”.
We can distinguish them by giving a type of approach in teaching. The particular sub and
traditional has heavily content of information.

My Insights
 In my research observation, I noticed that most of the student and some teachers prefer to
both traditional and progressive curriculum because they want to combine the different way
of how the teacher as well as the students will engage in learning.

14
My Reflections
 In this activity I’ve learned how to indicate the process and the product in the lesson and I’ve
learned also that in every subjects there must be different content process and product in
order for the learners to understand better the lesson.

My Insights
 In Activity 2, I learned that it is really important to understand all the criteria because it
allows the teacher to reflect on her way of teaching. A teaching process where we convey our
lesson to the students and in order for the teacher to be effective. As a future teacher I would
also impart my knowledge and skills to the student so that they will have an interest to listen
and participate in the class.

DESIGN”

22
My Personal Insights
All the types of curriculum is very important and plays a big role in the lives of teacher and
students. The curriculum design model view the different features and characteristics that
every student can easily adapt. As a future teacher, I would like to impost the “learner-
centered” design model, so that the student would learned how to stand on their own and also
I’d like to impost the “life situation design” so that the student will relate their experiences
for the new learning. The teacher will only be a facilitator.

My Analysis
 The teacher should be ready and mastered his/her lesson and at the end of the day he/she will
expect that the students will clearly understand the lesson. Teacher should develop student’s
full potential to have a “LIFELONG LEARNING”.

 Stakeholders hold a vital role in curriculum, students as the core of the curriculum. The
Teacher as a curricularist. The head as the manager. The Parent’s as partners. They have
different roles on curriculum but the same goal and that is to promote a better education in
the face of 21st century and be ready to compete globally.

“ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING,

ASSESSMENT AS LEARNING AND
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
HOW ARE THEY PRACTICED?”

31
My Analysis
1. Did you observe assessment practices for the three (3) forms of assessment? Explain
your answer.
 Yes, I observed that the teacher used the three forms of assessment inside the
classroom to identify some areas where the students can engage themselves and
advocate their own learning.
2. Are results of assessment OF learning affected by the observance/implementation of
assessment FOR learning? Explain your answer.
 No, the assessment OF learning was never affected by the assessment FOR
learning because they are almost have the same goal and that is to know the
student’s progress and level of achievement.
3. Based on your observations, to what extent is Assessment AS learning (self-
assessment) practiced compared to Assessment FOR (formative) and OF learning
(summative).
 Assessment As learning focuses on the use of the task or an activity to allow
students the opportunity to use assessment to further their own learning.
Assessment FOR learning and Assessment OF learning focused in determining
student’s progress during a unit or block of instruction.
4. Which phrase refers to Assessment FOR learning? Assessment OF learning?
Assessment AS learning?
DepEd Order No. 8, s. 2015 states “Assessment is a process that is used to keep
track of learners’ progress in relation to learning standards.., to promote self-reflection
and personal accountability among students about their own learning and to provide bases
for the profiling of student performance on the learning competencies and standards of
the curriculum”.
 Assessment FOR Learning is a process that is used to keep track of learners’
progress- Assessment AS Learning promotes self-reflection and personal
accountability among students about their own learning, while Assessment OF
Learning provide bases for the profiling of students.

32
My Reflections
1. As a student did you like Assessment? Do students like assessment? Why or why
not?
 I like Assessment because it helps and motivate me in a manner of learning.
Assessment is like a map that if you follow the rule you will reach your goal. I
observed not all the grade 7 wants to have an assessment because of them don’t
know what Assessment is.
2. What can you do to eliminate students’ fear of assessment? Can frequent
formative assessment (Formative assessment) reduce if not eliminate fear of
assessment?
 As a teacher I will help them to lessen their fear when it comes to assessment by
supporting them and let them understand step by step what is the importance of
assessment and also by guiding them. Another thing is that I will let them
compare their past performance with the present achievements. In this way they
will become prepared and think that formative assessment is a challenge for them
to overcome.
3. Do you like the idea and practice of self-assessment (assessment AS learning)?
Why or why not?
 Yes, I like the idea and practice of self-assessment because it assess understanding
as well as knowledge. It also promotes student-centered learning which
encourages students to examine their own learning and levels pf understanding. It
also considerate learning in which reflecting on things that they have learned that
requires students to consider new knowledge in the past of their previous
experiences.

Learning Episode 2

“GUIDING PRINCIPLES in the

ASSESSMENT of LEARNING”

36
My Analysis
1. Which principles of assessment were observed to have been practiced?
 The principles of assessment that I observed and have been practiced is the
“Learners must be given feedback about their performance”, because it is very
important to appreciate the students’ work and their performance for them to be
able to do their responsibilities well and be encourage because it adds
inspiration and it gives them motivation to study more.

2. Which principle/s was/were least observed/ not observed?

 The principles that were least observed is the “self-assessment” because not
all the time the teacher allow the students to have a “self-assessment”.
Because the teacher sometimes forgot this kind of assessment and she
focuses on the lesson.

37
My Reflections
We assess what we value and value what we assess. What should I do to make
assessment worthwhile?

38

47
My Reflections

Did you have a similar experience? Reflect on it.

 Yes, very much similar I remember I had a teacher last semester he is very
discouraging because the examination that he has given to us is very much different
to the lesson that we have discussed. I’m very much disappointed because I studied
very well for the preparation for our exam and then during the examination when I
saw the exam I and all my classmates were asking each other “what is this”?.. This
is not included in our discussion before. Teachers should avoid that because it is not
proper anymore. Lesson learned I will never do that to my future students.

“ON PORTFOLIOS”

49
My Analysis

50
My Reflections
1. Have portfolios made the learning assessment process inconvenient? Is the effort
exerted on portfolio assessment commensurate to the improvement of learning
that results from the use of portfolio.
 No, the learning portfolio for me makes the learning more convenient not
inconvenient. It helps the teacher easily identify what the students have learned.
The effort exerted on portfolio assessment mainly proportion to the
improvement of learning it shows how the learner acquired or achieved the
lesson.
2. Can showcase portfolios be assessment portfolios as well?
 Yes, it can be an assessment portfolios as well because as I observed the
showcase portfolios focus more on the “final product” while the assessment
portfolios focus more on the “achievement” of the learner. However, the two are
similar somehow in many ways
3. Can development or growth portfolios be assessment portfolios?
 Yes, it can be because development or growth portfolios and assessment
portfolios are similar in documenting the work of the students and the way it
will be analyze.

“The K to 12 GRADING SYSTEM”

56
57
My Reflections
In an era where the emphasis is self-directed learning, demonstration of knowledge, skills
and values learned (outcome-based education) do grades really matter?
 For me, grades are really matter because it is the evidence of the performance of
students it is also emphasize the recognition of student’s positive achievements and
comparing their current output to their own proper performance.
What are your thoughts about the reflection of core values of the Filipino child in the
Report Card?
 Every school in the Philippine has its own vision, mission and some core values. For
me, those core values are accurate to use in the Report Card because it will not only gain
good grades or assess in the tasks in the classroom but also in the assessment of their
values/ behavior towards the society.
Points for improvement
 I suggest that there should be more facilities in every school for the smooth teaching
learning process. Also that the government will have a program regarding the
improvement of the character of every students because nowadays students’ attitudes are
very disgusting unlike the student’s before.

“REPORTING STUDENTS’
PERFORMANCE”

59
My Analysis
1. In the Homeroom meeting, did the teachers reporting and communicating of
grades take place smoothly? Or were there instances when discussions became
heated because of the way reporting was handled? Describe your observations.
 As I observed the Homeroom meeting, that was the first time that my
cooperating teacher conduct homeroom meeting because she’s a new teacher in that
school. The reporting and communicating of grades take smoothly. There was no
heated discussions of grades. I’ll just observed that the parents have question
regarding the grades of their child their just talk to my cooperating teacher personally.
The teacher also report the behavior of the students in the class that may affect the
grades of the child.

60
My Reflections
1. Grades are often source of misunderstanding. How should I do reporting so that it
will result to effective learning?
 I can do an evaluation for the students’ work as a means of communicating to
students’, parents, graduate schools, professional schools, and future employers about
the students’ performance, and potential for further success as a source of motivation
to students for continued learning and improvement as a means of organizing a lesson,
a unit in that grades mark transitions in a course and bring closure to it. Additionally,
grading provides students with feedback on their own learning, clarifying for them
what they understand, what they don’t understand and what they can improve. Grading
also provides feedback to instructors on their students learning information that can
inform future teaching decisions, because grades are used as evaluation of students
work. It is important that grades accurately reflect the quality of student work and that
student work is graded fairly.

-I find out that there should be clear and valid criteria as a basis for grading.
Teacher should never guess a grades it should be have an authentic criteria to be based
on. There should also a separate and specific focus for every matter on reporting grades
for example: the character preference should separate to the performance preference of
every students. Everything should stated clear

being a good example/role model to them the way I speak and act in front of them.
Also I will pass my philosophy in education to my students. I will be patient and try
to understand my student to build a good relationship with them. I will not just be a
teacher to mu students but rather I would also be a good listener to them.
I will consider what the students need in relation to the subject matter. I will try

PHILOSOPHY OF
EDUCATION”

66
My Reflection/Insights
1. Have you discovered your dominant Philosophy of Education? How do you feel
after knowing it? Is your philosophy or firm belief of education reflected in what
you are doing as a future teacher?
My dominant Philosophy of Education is “Progressivism”
The practices that I do as a student and future teacher reflect my philosophy are:
(describe in sentences)
 “Teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops”, this quotes
ring a bell in my ears. As a future teacher my philosophy in education that I practice
as a student is that I always keep in my mind that I need to carry out my vocation
and mission wholeheartedly to a worthy classroom environment in a decent society
and I always give importance the values and moral that I know will help me
honorably in the future.

2. In your observations, does an experienced teacher practice what they believe in

(philosophy of education) in actual teaching? If yes, describe the instance/episode.
If No, what could be the reason?
 Yes, the experienced teacher practice what they believe in (philosophy of
education) in actual teaching specially the “Behaviorism” because that is the most
important philosophy for them to reinforce inside the classroom. Yet, there are some
instances that the Philosophy of Education is not effective because they can’t predict
the attitude of the students towards studying.

1. Would you consider teaching as a full time job? Why or why not?
 As I view the teacher’s program I will consider teacher as a full time job because it
is my passion to teach and educate other people.
2. Are the conditions in the classroom conducive to the welfare of both the learners and
teacher? How will you improve on it?
 The classroom is conducive for learning I just observed the lack of electric fan in
every room because as you enter the room it’s very hot that makes the students
distractions.
3. After closely observing the teacher in the school setting, are you motivated to
continue on becoming a teacher? What in the teacher’s practices inspire you to
become a professional teacher?
 Honestly speaking as I observed the actual teaching I noticed that it is very difficult
to teach especially if the student are not interested with the topic you are teaching.
Despite of that I will continue in this field because I got inspired in my resource
teacher in her hardship in teaching.
4. How can I improve the school setting that I have observed when I become a teacher?
a. Classroom arrangement- I think there is a need to renovate the paint of the
room and repair some of the desks and board
b. Bulletin Board display- I should make it colorful and attractive and use big
fonts and lots of pictures to make the display more lively
c. School Playground- there are no particular playground in the school that I
have observed I suggest to have a shed or place to rest so that the students
could relax if break time.
