Name: Ashmit Rai Roll No.: 19BEE097
Aim: Steady state FE analysis of an Electromagnet.
Theory: Explain briefly about the magnetic circuit and its analysis.
A closed loop that depicts the flow of magnetic field shows how magnetic flux is lined with
the material and this forms a Magnetic Circuit. The presence of charges in space or in a
medium creates an electric field; similarly, the flow of current in a conductor sets up a
magnetic field. Magnetic circuit analysis includes analyzing various parameters such as flow
of magnetic flux lines, magnetic field strength around various regions of the magnetic core
used, analysis of material used, etc.

Image of Solid Model and brief explanation

For E type core and I type core, M-19 Silicon Steel
material and copper material for coil is used. In the
same fashion, material is assigned to various
sections of the coil. The number of turns in the coil
is 5000 and current of 1 amperes is applied to the
coil.

Image of 2D Mesh model and brief explanation

The model is divided into extra small triangles and
the magnet software will calculate magnetic flux
density of each triangle and further evaluate the total
magnetic density for us. However, the meshing here
is crude. As the model is divided into finite
elements, we call this analysis as finite element
analysis.
Flux function in Contour: Image and brief
explanation
On the center limb we have wound the coil
therefore the max flux line is there in the
center . If the flux in the center limb is 5
weber then it will be divided into 5/2 in the
upward part and 5/2 in downward part

Flux density plot in arrow format: Image

and brief explanation
In the centre of the core, following the arrow
plot, we can see that red colour is assigned
to maximum flux density so in the middle of
E- core, maximum flux density is observed.

Flux density plot in shaded format:

Image and brief explanation
This depicts the flux density at various parts of
the coil and the magnitude of flux density at
each and every point of the coil. At the centre
of E-core, we can see the maximum flux
density and the green colour depicts that
portion has flux density equal to the value of
0.8 Tesla. In the air, the flux density is zero.
Field intensity plot in shaded format:
Image and brief explanation
At various regions of the cores, we can
notice the variation in magnitude of
magnetic field intensity. At the centre of the
air gap the field intensity is maximum and
as we go away from the air gap, the field
intensity reduces.

Stored energy plot in shaded

format: Image and brief explanation
Stored energy can also be analysed using
this software and it is maximum near to the
region where there is air gap.

Reverse the direction of current

As the current is flowing only in the coils
wound around the limb of E-core, the red
colour is visible in the portion of the coil.
Only in the conductors of the coils are
assigned with current and no other part has
current density which is evident from the
visualisation also.
Current density plot in arrow
format: Image and brief explanation
There is no arrow visible as the current is
within the surface of the coil.

Conclusion: In this experiment, we learnt how to use the Magnet Software. We built an E-I
core system and also carried out Finite Element analysis for the same. We learnt how to
assign values, and material to the core, and also set up the current magnitude and the nature
of current supplied. In addition to that, we learnt how to visualize the flux lines and
determine the concentration of magnetic flux density, magnetic field intensity, current
density, etc. at various regions of the core.
