Explaining the Star st – How to start. (These pictures are mine, but not part of this pattern, it`s just to show how)
The little diagram on the right shows you the first star
st in a row (in black) and the next star st in red.
Through out the row you will continue with the star st
in red. At the end of row turn work and start the next
row just like the first row.
When you have 2 rows of star st you will see the stars.
The red colour in the diagram is counted as one star st.
Gauge
Sizes
6/9 months (12/18 months) 2 years (3/5 years) 6/8 years. Check the size chart below.
These are measurements in cm of the finished garment.
The jacket is worked from the bottom to the top. The squares are made first. The squares are sewn
together in a row before you make rows of starstitch. The whole body is made in one piece (rows of
star st for the fronts and the back. When you reach the arms, make the right and the left front, then
the back. A border and two strings are made in the end.
The pattern
Follow the pattern below. 6 rounds on each square. You don`t have to cut yarn for each round, it`s
made easy to bring the yarn with you and start each round where you end each round.
Then it`s time for the star st. Check the picture below. There are 7 points/places on each square to
place each star st. Start on the front of the square row, this will be the front right of the jacket.
Check the explanations above of how to start a star st and the picture below.
Row 1 :
35 (35) 42 (42) 49 star st, turn work.
(When you use the points/places in the
picture you will end up with these number of
star st, thats included the first puff st)
Row 2 – row 8 (10) 10 (12) 14.
Like row 1.
The back.
Row 9 (11) 11 (13) 15 :
Start on the right side of the garment after the right front, skip 1 (1) 1 (1) 2 star st or star st
point(s)/place(s) and work star st through out the row, but turn work when you have 1 (1) 1 (1) 2 star
st point(s) left on the row before the left front/shoulder.
Continue with rows of star st.
Row 16(18)20(23)25 : The last row.
Make the same amount of star st as the last row of the right and left shoulder. Work the star st from
the outer edge of each shoulder. Finish off and weave in ends.
Assembly : Sew the front pieces together with the back piece with whip stitch or the stitch you
prefere.

Make measure around your chest / hip, since this is a straight model I think the measurement around
your chest is the most important. The vest does not need to fit your hips at all if you would like a
short version.
Eks : Chest size 103 cm (L). 103 cm/10,5 cm (one square) = 9,8. So that means you will need 10
squares. 10 X 7 (star st/points) = 70 star stitch. ( Smaller than 9,5 I would go for one less square).
Then follow the same approach as the original pattern, but ad more rows ofcource. This depending
that you will have to try it on as you go and remembering to do the turns on a even or odd number of
rows. When you get to the armholes, you would need some markers to set the fronts, the back and
how many star st to skip for the armholes.
In this case I think I would make the both fronts 15 star st each, skip 5 stars st for each armhole and
make 30 starstitch for the back. ( = 70 star st) I haven`t tried this, so I can`t promise it will work.
