WHAT’S NEW (Your Lesson for Today)

Environmental Education: Its Definition and Importance

Environmental Education is rooted in the belief that: 1) humans can live compatibly with nature; 2)
humans can act equitably toward each other; 3) a human’s well-being is inextricably bound with environmental
quality; 4) we and the systems we create (our societies, political systems, economies, religions, culture, technologies)
impact the total environment; 5) people can make informed decisions that consider future generations; and (6)
critical and creative thinking, decision making, and communication, as well as collaborative learning must be
emphasized, and are essential for active and meaningful learning, both in school and over a lifetime (ASCD
Environmental Booklet, 2003).

Environmental Education is a process by which people develop awareness, concern and knowledge of the
environment and learn to use this understanding to preserve, conserve and utilize the environment in a sustainable
manner for the benefit of present and future generations. This is intended for all types of learners, students, out-of-
school youth, community leaders, policy makers, and the general public to develop appropriate environment-
related skills.

Taken from Belgrade Charter, 1976, “the goal of environmental education is to develop a world population
that is aware of, and concerned about, the environmental and its associated problems, and which has the knowledge
skills, attitudes, motivations, and commitment to work individually and collectively toward solutions of current
problems and the prevention of new ones”. The basic aim of environmental education, therefore, is to provide
different group of people as well as graduates in a variety of professional fields with the knowledge needed to
develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment and the rational utilization of its riches. This education
should inculcate competencies and needed for the solution of environmental problems and foster the highest
cultural level of human’s productive activity.

Since learners are a major component of the teaching and learning process, as such, they have to be helped
in enhancing their own responsibility and accountability to care for the environment and be its stewards. They
need to be exposed to situations so that they can develop and possess unique ethics for the environment and
participate in activities to conserve and protect it. They also have to be taught how to manage efficiently and
properly so that the desired quality of life is maintained and development is sustained.
