CLEAN INDIA MOVEMENT

Foreword

The emphasis given by Mahatma Gandhi on sanitation and hygiene is

very high when compared to political independence. Mahatma Gandhi
stressed the need for everyone's involvement in the development of
Swachh Bharat when he said, “Everyone is his own scavenger.” Keeping
in view the importance given to sanitation and cleanliness by theGandhi,
Government of India has started Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October
2014 at Rajghat as an opt tribute to the 'Father of our Nation'. Education
being the apex body for coordinating, guiding and managing research and
education in agriculture in the country is not only a trailblazer for the self-
sufficiency and sustainability in food grains production for the country but
also in developing the safe environment.

To make an adorable project or to give a view and thoughts is not

simple for me . This project is in my own labour and I have tried
first time to write a project in the form of book. There is a very
short inspirational story which I would I like to share , when I
was in my class , listening lectures of my honorable professor
about this art I found a solution and the great eagerness came
into me and I thought why can I not write a project in the form
of book ? and so on its also suggested by my professor.
This movement was really as like innovation for me a
pleasant and also thinkable for me so I thought I will try and now
result is in front of you . It might not be possible if the scarcity
of teachers and their important lectures that I might not get , so I
would like to thanks my all professors of my class M.com ,even
though I think it happened because of their bless . I thanks my
professors, my friends who motivated me so thereafter I did it .

CLEAN INDIA MOVEMENT
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

1. Introduction
nd
The Swachh Bharat Mission was officially launched on 2 October, 2014 at Rajghat New
Delhi by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi, with an aim to make India
Clean. The mission is the country's biggest ever cleanliness drive with two million
Government employees and school and college students participating in this event. The
mission has been launched inorder to work seriously towards the vision of Mahatma Gandhi,
who gave a quintessential message to the nation through his efforts to educate people around
him about cleanliness. He wished to see a “Clean India” where people work hand in hand to
make the country clean.

The campaign of Swachh Bharat launched by the Government of India is aimed to

nd
accomplish various goals and fulfil the vision and mission of “Clean India” by 2 October
th
2019 which is 150 birth anniversary of the Great Mahatma Gandhi 'Father of our nation'.
Therefore, it is a great gesture and an apt tribute to the Mahatma that the 'Swachh Bharat
nd
Campaign' is launched by the government on his birth day i.e., on 2 October.
❖ To eradicate the system of open defecation in India.
❖ To convert unsanitary toilets into pour flush toilets.
❖ 100% collection and scientific processing/disposal/reuse/recycle of solid waste to
eradicate manual scavenging.
❖ To bring about a behavioral change in the people regarding healthy sanitation
practices.
❖ To link people with the programmes of sanitation and public health in order to
generate public awareness.
❖ To build up the urban local bodies strong in order to design execute and operate all
systems related to cleanliness.
❖ To completely start the scientific processing, disposal reuse and recycling of the
municipal solid waste.
❖ To provide required environment for the private sector to get participated in the
capital expenditure for all the operations and maintenance costs related to the clean
campaign.
This mission will help to make clean India's tourist destination which will bring
people, and will also bring a paradigm shift in the country's global perception.
CLEAN INDIA MOVEMENT

2. Need of Swachh Bharat Mission

The need for maintaining the right cleanliness sanitation and hygiene in any
country/community is very essential. While taking on cleanliness, Mahatma Gandhiji
stressed that cleanliness is next to godliness and said that a clean body cannot reside in an
unclean city.

It is perhaps the most basic step for preventing the diseases. According to a study by WHO,
lack of cleanliness leads to an annual loss of over Rs.6500 every year to each Indian.
Unhygienic surroundings are the main reasons behind several diseases that are prevalent in
the country. An UN report indicated that currently, nearly 60 per cent of India's population
practice open defecation which puts them at risk of diseases like cholera, diarrhea, typhoid,
tapeworm and other enteric diseases. The water of river Ganga is also unsafe for bathing
because it contains fecal coliform bacteria in large amounts (120 times higher than
permitted). World Bank report (2006) indicated that, India losses 6.4% GDP annually because
of poor hygiene and sanitation. It is, therefore, imperative to have sanitation and hygiene
intact both at personal and community level to improve health of masses.

5. Energy Saving Lighting Systems

Progressive consciousness was promoted in the Academy by reducing energy consumption
or moving to energy saving lighting and solar heating systems. Three-way strategy
implemented in the campus is: 1) to move to power saving LED systems 2) by promoting
solar-based energy utilization and 3) Introducing bicycle systems in place of non-renewable
fossil fuel based transport system within the Academy campus.

Capturing sunlight and turn it into electricity is first and the most important aspect of green
energy strategy being followed ,Main road side old sodium vapor street lights have been
replaced with new LED lights of higher efficiency and power saving. The energy produced
from natural sources such as sunlight, wind, rain, plants and geothermal heat is known as
green energy. These energy resources are renewable, meaning they are naturally
replenished. Renewable energy sources provide safe and pollution free environment
where as fossil fuels based energy sources produce pollutants such as Green House Gasses
(GHGs). Green energy can replace fossil fuels in all major areas of use including electricity,
water and space heating and fuel for motor vehicles. Green energy usage has been
encouraged in different ways of energy needs capturing sunlight and into
electricity is first and the most important aspect of green energy.

6. Waste Recycling and Composting

Living natural materials like wood waste, saw dust and combustible agricultural waste can
be converted in to energy with far fewer greenhouse gas emissions. The leaf litter, dry
grasses, weeds are collected daily in the campus. This solid waste is collected from the
campus roads under avenue tress, pavements and landscape areas. All these bio-degradable
wastes are collected and after segregation this farm waste is used for vermicomposting. The
vermicompost produced is used for nursery plants and landscape garden plants as manure.
The fallen leaf litter, grass clippings, etc., are collected from the campus and stalked at the old
nursery. These organic plant wastes are used for making vermi compost with help of cattle
dung and earth worms. There are four trenches prepared at the old nursery for preparation of
vermi compost where proper shade is maintained as the earth worms are very sensitive to the
sun light. Proper moisture is maintained in the compost bit by sprinkling water with rose
cans. The vermicompost so produced is used as manure for the nursery and ornamental
plants. Community based bio-gass plant linked with vermicomposting established in
backward region of Nalgonda District of Telangana involving Banjara Society demonstrated
the reduction of crop residue burning. Safe cooking gas to households improved soil health
with vermicompost addition and economic benifits thus derived with enhanced soil health

13. Rain Water Harvesting and Diverting Roof Water into NAARM Lake
1. Lake: Conserving rainwater and its utilization to various activities in the institute saves
energy, ground water recharge, micro-environment modifications besides
contributing swatchh neighborhood. A natural water body has been developed in the
academy where the run-off water from the surrounding catchment areas is diverted to the
lake where the water collected and stored. This helped in water saving and improved
ambiance of the academy in addition to ground water recharge and increase of ground water
table. With an objective to integrate different components of integrated farming systems fish
culture is being practiced by introducing different fish species viz., katla, common carp, grass
carp, rohu etc., in the water pond in the campus. This will help in resource generation. This
activity was also got coverage in newspapers indicating the water harvesting and Integrated
Farming Systems (IFS) demonstrations and exposed to participants various training
programmes undertaken .

a) Farm Pond: The run-off water from various fields of farm and roads was diverted through
surface and sub-surface drainage channels and is collected in the farm pond located at the
lowest elevation in the campus. This helped in recharging the nearby wells throughout the
year. Due to these rain water and excess run off water collection and water saving methods
adopted in the campus, it is observed and practically found that the ground water table has
raised considerably and it is measured that the water is available at a depth of 15 to 20 feet
itself in the bore well behind the Director’s Residence even during January and February.

14. Household Kitchen Waste and Garbage Cleaning

In collaboration with GHMC, general garbage cleaning and kitchen waste collection was
arranged from all the residential quarters. A garbage collection vehicle operated by GHMC
contractual workers is regularly collecting the kitchen waste and garbage and transport the
material to the compost unit. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation(GHMC)
authorities have distributed two types of dust bins to all the house holders. The blue bin is to
be used for dry solid wastes and the green bin is to be used for wet solid wastes. This
segregated wastes are collected daily by the GHMC contractual workers and transported in
the trollies for further processing to make manure.

Office rooms and sitting places need to be taken as priority towards clean office, more
digitization, minimum paper usage, etc., gets attention to visitors, trainees and
students of the Academy and bring awareness and improves their role in various
swatchh activities. Service books and personal files of Academy's staff have been
digitized. All office communications are circulated to the concerned only by email.
Academy uses MIS/FMS, an online financial management system for

receipts, payments, purchase request and service matters of staff members. A

campaign was held among the staff members for highlighting the significance of
digitization/e-governance towards the swachh mission. As a part of Swachh Bharat
Mission, the Academy's premises have been made plastic free zone'. Use of plastic cups for all
official functions in the academy has been discontinued. The basic and most important
element for success of this waste management begins with the commitment of all stakeholder
to avoid usage of non-degradable materials such as plastic covers, plastic bottles, plastic
cups, and other non-degradable synthetic material. As an alternative, encourage material
which are made of degradable material such as cloth bags, jute baskets, reusable bags and
reusable glass bottles are promoted.

Office rooms with digitization and reduced paper usage

17. Swachh Health Centre

The Academy hosts good facility of health center, with well-maintained lawns and greenery.
About 1000 pensioners are getting benefitted besides 200 current employees and supporting
staff by this health centre. However, cleanliness and good maintenance of health centre is
essential for overall wellbeing of patients and staff working in the centre. Besides safe
disposal of hospital biomedical waste need to be taken up with utmost care. Health
center wastes consisting of gauze, cotton, bandages, syringes, needles, swabs, and
other blood stained infected materials, medicine empty strips, empty bottles and
vials are collected by the health center staff in basket, wearing gloves and masks and
carried to the incinerator. These wastes are then disposed of by burning in the
incinerator on a regular basis.

18. Swachh Kitchen

The most important element of waste management in any organization depends on
segregation of waste at source i.e. primarily segregation is done at individual house hold
level, in kitchens of hostels and guest houses, in the dining areas of hostels, canteens and all
common areas where food is served by segregating the waste into appropriate bins that is
collecting wet waste in the green bins, recyclable waste in the blue bins and hazardous waste
in the red bins. This initial and appropriate segregation according to the type of waste
material is very crucial for further processing.

a) Wet Waste Management in Halls of Residence Kitchen: The wet waste collected from
different sources will be sent for processing at bio-gas plant to produce gas through aerobic
process or the segregated wet waste is sent for composting unit for making manure through
anaerobic process. Thus success of wet waste management is decided by effective handling
of wet waste segregation at source.

b) Dry Waste Management: The dry waste collected from different sources is taken to
processing yard and further segregated in to next level for shifting recyclable waste to be sold
to agencies handling such material, whereas the residual reject from the dry waste will be
sent for incineration in an eco-friendly incinerator for generation of electricity power.
