FIRST QUARTER
Module No. 7: Writes an Objective/Balanced Review or Critique of a Work of Art, an
Event, or a Program
Lesson 7: Objective and Balanced Critique Paper
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. Understand the ways on how to write a good critique.
2. Determine the importance of writing an objective and balanced critique
3. Write an Objective-based Critique Paper for an Artwork, Event, or a Program.

RATIONALE:

Writing a critique is not simply putting every thought you have in mind about
something to a piece of paper. A good critique is well-thought and well-researched. It
should not be all-opinion but should be objective. Making it as objective as possible
means presenting fact-supported notions.

Writing a good critique or review means being balanced. The one who writes a
critique needs to consider information or notions that might be at two opposing ends
of the subject matter. One needs to weigh these notions before arriving at a statement
critical of a piece of writing or literary work.
A good critique or review must always be based on relevant information.
Everybody can write a critique, but it takes diligence and patience in knowing all
necessary and relevant information about a subject matter to be able to write a fact-
based and unbiased critique.

.

Directions: Select five (5) questions which are essential in writing a good critique or review.
Put a check before each question.

REVIEW

features of a text, such as grammar, syntax, and literary devices.

2. Like an essay, a _______________uses a formal academic writing style and has a clear
structure, that is, an introduction, body, and conclusion.

3. Formalism heavily relies on ________________and the use of language in attempting to

figure out the meaning of a literary text.

4. ________________ refers to a collection of political and social movements which each focus
on equal rights for women, and in many cases, other marginalized groups.

5. Feminist literary analyzes the work through the lens of the _____________and period in
which the work was written.

WHAT’ S NEW

A GOOD CRITIQUE

A good critique is a careful analysis of an argument to determine what is said, how

well the points are made, what assumptions underlie the argument, what issues are
overlooked, and what implications are drawn from such observations.

TYPES OF CRITIQUE

Opinion-based Critique is a critique that is often biased and emotionally driven. Although
it may present some facts but its entirety is based on the author’s opinion.

Objective-based Critique is considered a good critique as it presents sufficient facts or

relevant evidence for every point it emphasizes. It interprets the facts accurately and
carefully arrives at a conclusion.

HOW TO WRITE A GOOD CRITIQUE

1. Read Actively (Articles) or Observe with Undivided Attention (Events/Artworks)

Read through the article once to get the main idea. The first time you read through
an article, you should simply try to understand the overall argument that the author is
making. Note the author's thesis. The same thing with events or artworks. Focus on details
and never do other things to really get the significant ideas.

2. Mark up the text as you read through it again.

It is sometimes helpful to use a red pen to make your markings stand out. When reading
articles and observing events or programs like speeches or talks, take note of the significant
sections or parts and mark it up. Ask yourself questions like these:

• What is the author's thesis/argument?

• What is the author's/speaker’s purpose in arguing said thesis?
• Who is the intended audience? Does the article/speaker effectively reach this
audience?
• Does the author/speaker have ample and valid evidence?
• Are there any holes in the author's argument?
• Did the author misrepresent evidence or add bias to evidence?
• Does the author reach a conclusive point?

3.Create a legend for your markings.

Create a unique symbol to differentiate between parts of the text or speech that might be
confusing, important, or inconsistent.
• For example, you could underline important passages, circle confusing ones, and
star inconsistencies.
• Creating a legend with assigned symbols allows you to quickly mark up an article.
Though it may take a little bit of time to recognize your own symbols, they will
quickly become ingrained in your mind and allow you to breeze through an article
much quicker than without a symbol legend.

4.Take some longer notes during subsequent readings.

In addition to a legend, it is helpful to take notes when expanded thoughts come to you as
you read. For instance, if you realize that an author's claim can be refuted by noting a
scientific study that you previously read, make a note of it in the margins, on a separate
piece of paper, or on a computer so that you can come back to your idea.
• Do not be foolish enough to think that you will remember your idea when the time
comes to write your critique.
• Spend the necessary time writing down your observations as you read. You will be
glad you did when it comes time to put your observations into a complete analytical
paper.

5.Develop a preliminary concept for your critique.

Form a vague opinion of the piece in question. Evaluate the author's overall argument after
you have read the article through two or three times. Record your initial reactions to the
text.
• Make a list of possible sources of evidence for your critique.
• Jog your memory for any literature you have read or documentaries you have seen
that might be useful for evaluating the article or a speech.
