KEY CONCEPTS
Guest luggage must treat with care and respect by valet or butler. In this lesson,
the student will learn how to perform packing, unpacking, storing, and preparing of guest luggage
management and standards in preparing of guest clothes and shoes.

INTRODUCTION TO NEW LESSON

PACKING, UNPACKING, STORING, AND PREPARING OF


GUEST LUGGAGE MANAGEMENT

Checking and inspecting the condition of the luggage first would be necessary steps in
managing them.

Dealing with guest luggage includes:


1. unpacking of luggage and storing of them either in the room or in another place within the
premises, including the organization of items for safety deposits;
2. storage of guest luggage;
3. security of guest properties;
4. liaison with porters; and
5. repairs of luggage and/or replacement of same if essential.

Dealing with guest clothes includes:


1. unpacking and storing in-room;
2. arranging for cleaning or dry cleaning and repairs; and
3. pressing of items.

Guest request include:


1. organizing repairs to equipment and sundry items;
2. making bookings, including travel, accommodation, theatre, dining, excursions, and tours;
3. making sundry purchases on behalf of the guest as required, such as flowers, gifts, and
special needs;
4. responding to unusual circumstances, or issues that rise during the guest’s stay; and
5. arranging for specific room service and delivery of room service functions.

When unpacking guest luggage, the valet or butler must explain that he needs to do the
following:
1. Ask for keys from the guest to unlock their luggage. Make sure to check first their
luggage. If there is any indication of tampering or any damages, inform the guest
immediately.
2. Outside of the luggage must be inspected if clean off any marks.
3. Put luggage on a proper surface to avoid damage. Luggage rack is the appropriate area to
use.
4. Ask first for guest instructions before removing all items in the luggage. Separate items
that are clean; dirty items are sent for laundering.
5. Properly place clothing and items neatly folded and stacked accordingly.
5.1. Drawers: Clothes like jumpers, casual shorts, t-shirts, underwear, and the like
5.2. Wardrobe: Clothes like shirts, trousers, coats, suits, skirts, gowns, and the like
5.3. Shoes: a. Should be put at the bottom of the wardrobe b. Separate in pairs- the
polished shoes and shoes requiring attention. Stack them in pairs and according to
colors and occasions.

5.4. Bathroom or powder/wake-up room: Toilet, Make-up cases.

There is a requirement for sensitivity when unpacking guest luggage because the guest could
also be tired and irritable from journey:
1. It is the decision of the guest to receive valet service, never force them.
2. Work as quickly as possible in order for the guest to have privacy.
3. Some guests will want to unpack bags containing their personal items but will be happy for valets
to unpack the other bags.
4. Be aware of the guest’s emotions.

STANDARD IN PREPARING GUEST CLOTHES AND SHOES

Preparing guest clothing


1. Ask for and follow the guest’s instructions on what they want to wear. The more direct and exact
information from the guest the higher, the better.
2. Make sure that all clothes are clean, tidy, pressed, and presentable.
3. Arrange each item accordingly so the guest can dress up quickly.

In pressing guest clothing, before a valet or butler undertake this task. It is highly recommended that
he must:

1. Receive instruction from the presser attendant on the correct procedure of pressing clothes.
2. Practice for confidence.

Arranging cleaning of guest clothes:


1. Check pockets to remove any items left.
2. Check the garments and remove any attached to it.
3. Complete internal document for requesting for laundry and/or dry cleaning which will be the
basis for charging the guest for the services provided.
4. Arrange collection of items or delivering of items to the laundry.
5. Indicate specific time when the guest will require items.

Cleaning of guest shoes:


1. Procure house training. This is important because the liability of the shoe when damaged
during the cleaning process will be charged to you.
2. When asked by the guest to clean the shoes, use polishes and brushes belongs to them.
3. Clean everything every after use.
4. Keep cleaning tools together for easy access.
5. Use a shoe tree for leather shoes every time.

SHOE TREE

6. Remove laces before start cleaning and applying polish. Secure shoe laces, as they're going to got
to be re-laced within the same way, when cleaning has been completed.
7. Polish the shoes using brush and cloth in accordance with house protocols or specific advance
from the guest.

8. Check the laces before replacing them. Fit new laces if necessary or when old laces show signs of
wear. Re-lace the shoes in the same way it was laced before cleaning them.

ACTIVITY NO. 1

Directions: Identify the following for which they are belong. Color Yellow if it is it shows
packing, Blue for unpacking, Violet for storing, Gray for preparing guest luggage and Green
for cleaning shoes. Put your answer on the space provided at the left side.
