Title: How to Analyze a Case Study

Example: Case Study for a Building Interior Fit-out Contractor

1. Identify the most important facts surrounding the case.

This kind of business entity involves architecture, engineering, procurement, and
construction just like a Building Construction Contractor. It requires compliance to the
rules and guidelines of concerned institutions in the government; client’s approval of
shop drawings, material technical data, and method of installation; buying the client’s
selected materials; site implementation which should be aligned with the project
timeline; and work inspection, testing and commissioning prior to the project handover.

2. Identify the key issue or issues.

One of the most common issues that arises is a Dispute on the Technical Data provided
by the client (i.e., Architectural design drawings mismatching with Civil/Structural design
drawings) and the concerned staffs are not able to discover it earlier or there is no clear
assignment of personnel to take charge of such issue; followed by Changes from the
client amidst the work implementation, so in effect, resulting to the Delay in
Implementation itself.

3. Specify alternative courses of action.

There must be a staff specifically assigned to thoroughly review all technical information
being received from the client. When needed information are missing or a dispute is
found out, a Technical Query must immediately be raised to the client, or an alternative
solution may be proposed. Changes must be carefully evaluated whether it is practical,
functional, or beneficial. Secure a Change Order approval from the client prior to
proceeding. A Project Timeline must be maintained and constantly be updated to
monitor any delays.

4. Evaluate each course of action.

When a dispute arises, which is more beneficial and time saving? To wait for the client’s
response to the Technical Query or to submit a Proposed Solution right away? Make a
precise assessment to the client’s changes prior to agreeing and implementing. Consider
the Project Timeline, Risk, and the corresponding Penalties to delays.

5. Recommend the best course of action.

Prior to commencement of the project contract, all available data must be carefully
studied by a dedicated staff and raise any issue to the client ahead of time. Any Change
Order must be duly approved by the client in terms of Time and Cost prior to
implementation.
