Effect of Elevation on Weight

If an object weighs m pounds at sea level, then its weight
W (in pounds) at a height of h miles above sea level is
given approximately by
 2
4000
W (h) = m .
4000 + h
If Amy weighs 120 pounds at sea level, how much will
she weigh on Pike’s Peak, which is 14, 110 feet above sea
level? (1 mile = 5280 feet). When the height h is too
large, what can we say about W ?

Limit of a function

Example

Spreading of Rumors
A model for the number of people N in a college
community who have heard a certain rumor is

N = P(1 − e −0.15d )

where P = 1000 is the total population of the

community and d is the number of days that have
elapsed since the rumor began. After a long time, what
can we say about N?

lim f (x) = ∞
x→x0
2 horizontal asymptote

Domain: Df = R: The graph doesn’t have vertical asymp-

totes.

⇒ f has slant asymptote: y = x when x → ∞.
2 2
a = lim x √xx 2 +1 = −1, b = lim √xx2 +1 + x = 0
x→−∞ x→−∞
⇒ and the slant asymptote y = −x when x → −∞.

lim − ln 1 + xe = −∞ ⇒ Vertical asymptote: x = −e.

lim+ ln 1 + xe = +∞ ⇒ Vertical asymptote: x = 0.

Continuous functions

Example
(
sin x
x ,x 6= 0
Find a such that f (x) = is continuous
a, x = 0

We have: lim sinx x = 1⇒ f (x) is continuous at x = 0 ⇔

x→0
a = 1.
Example
(
x. sin x1 , x 6= 0
Determine if f (x) = is continuous at
0, x = 0
x = 0.
We have: lim x sin x1 = 0= f (0) (because sin x1 is bounded,
x→0
x → 0) ⇒ f (x) is continuous at x = 0.
(Phan Thi Khanh Van) Limit, Continuous functions, Asymptotes October 22, 2020 28 / 30
Continuous functions

Example
Find a such
( that f (x) is continuous:
ax + 5, x < 2
f (x) =
x 2 + 3, x ≥ 2

lim+ f (x)= lim+ (x 2 + 3)= 7

x→2 x→2
lim− f (x) = lim− (ax + 5)= 2a + 5
x→2 x→2
So that f (x) is continuous at 2, we must have: 2a + 5 =
7 = f (2) or a = 1
