1. Scope
This specification covers ASTM A304/SAE J1268 4140H bar stock supplied in either of the
following grades: electric furnace, aircraft quality or electric furnace, vacuum degassed, carbon
deoxidized, aircraft quality.

3. Definitions
There are no unique definitions in this standard. Terms used in this standard that have a general
definition for usage in Cummins Engineering Standards are defined in CES 10056, Glossary.

4. Specification
4.1. Typical Applications

Accessory drive shafts and other critical or high quality shafts.

4.2. Microstructure

The grain size, as determined in accordance with ASTM E112, shall be 5 to 8.

4.3. Quality

4.3.1. The material shall meet the limits of the magnetic particle inspection shown on the
part drawing.

4.3.2. The material shall be free from sub-surface defects detrimental to the finished parts
machined there from after the minimum stock is removed under the recommended stock removal
for hot rolled alloy steel bars subject to magnetic particle inspection.

4.3.3. This material must meet the limits of “A3”, “B2”, “C8” and “D2” of CES 16050.

4.4. Chemical Composition

4.4.1. Chemical composition shall be per Table 1: Chemical Composition on page 2.

4.5. Certification and Heat Codes

4.5.1. The steel supplier shall assign a heat code to all heats and submit a certification to the
Metallurgical Laboratory of the producing plant.

4.5.2. The heat code and part numbers shall be on the certification. Heat codes shall also be
marked on all bars.
