PART 1 (C2, 4 marks)

Maintaining and servicing air conditioners at home are the essential checkups to ensure the air
conditioner works at the optimum level. Regular maintenance will prolong the life span and enable it to
run efficiently with constant fresh airflow. Followings are some steps on how to clean a split air conditioner
(A/C) unit. Complete the instructions by choosing suitable imperative verbs from the box.

STEP 1: Turn off the power source and (a) _________________ the front panel. Go to the appropriate
circuit breaker or power source in your home and turn off the power to your split A/C before opening the
front panel. Undo the latches in the front of the A/C so you can access the inside of the unit.

STEP 2: (b) ________________ the air filters from your split A/C. The long, rectangular pieces that rest at
the front of the appliance are the air filters. Press a tab along the side of each air filter to loosen and
remove them. Make sure to shake the filters outside to remove any obvious dust and dirt before starting
the cleaning process.

STEP 3: Rinse the air filters under running water. Take the air filters to a sink or large basin and pour cool
tap water over them. If your filters are not that dirty, rinsing them might be enough to remove the dust.
If running water does not seem to do the trick, use a sponge or cleaning pad to rub in a mild cleaning
detergent gently. Then, rinse them off and let them air dry.

STEP 4: (c) ______________ the dust off of the cooling fins. Ensure that the A/C is free from dust by paying
attention to the entire surface area of the cooling fins.

STEP 5: (d) ______________ the air filters back in their original position once you have confirmed that
they are clean and dry. They should glide into place easily but double-check your manual if you have any
difficulties with the assembly process. These freshened air filters will ensure that only clean and cool air
makes it through your A/C.

STEP 6: Turn your split A/C back on to make sure everything is working. Go to the circuit breaker or power
source for your A/C and switch the electricity back on. Once the power is up and running, check your split
A/C to see if cold air is coming out of it. Enjoy breathing in refreshing and clean air.

Part 3 (10 marks)

Manual Material Handling (MMH) means moving or handling things by lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling,
carrying, holding, or restraining. MMH is the most common cause of musculoskeletal disorders,
occupational fatigue and work-related lower back pain and injuries. Each year several thousand workers
are permanently disabled by back injuries. All these facts make the prevention of back injuries a crucial
and challenging problem for occupational health and safety. Image 1 below shows the required steps a
worker should follow to lift an object to avoid back injury. Based on the image, answer the following
questions.

to invest in workplace safety and elaborate on why it is essential.
