1. (a) An established company has decided to add a new product to its line. It will buy the product
from a manufacturing outlet, package it and sell it to a number of distributors that have
been selected on a geographical basis. Market research has already indicated the volume

(b) A construction company has four large bulldozers located at four different garages. The
bulldozers are to be moved to four different construction sites so that there is a bulldozer
at each site. The distances in miles between the bulldozers and the construction sites are
given in the following table.

(i) Use a Hungarian algorithm to determine how the bulldozers should be moved to

2. (a) A small brewery produces Drink A and Drink B. To make Drink A, 5 kg of com,
4 kg of hops and 35 kg of malt are required. To make Drink 8, 15 kg of com, 4 kg of
hops and 20 kg of malt are required. Only 480 kg of com, 160 kg of hops and 1190 kg of
malt are available. The brewery makes a profit of $130 for each kg of Drink A and $230
for each kg of Drink B.

(i) Using x to represent the amount of Drink A to be produced and y to represent the
amount of Drink B to be produced, determine the inequalities of the constraints
that must be satisfied by the variables.

(ii) State the objective function that represents the maxmized profit.

(iii) On the grid provided on page 9, plot a graph to represent EACH of the inequalities

must produce to maximize its profit.

3. (a) Five per cent of batteries produced by a certain company are defective. On a particular
day, batteries produced are inspected until the first defective battery is encountered. Let
X denote the inspection number on which the first defective battery occurs.

4. (a) The marks of students in this year's midterm and final examination are represented by the
independent random variables X and Y, respectively. The combined mark, T, is computed
as T = X + 0.5 Y. Assume that X and Y are normally distributed with means of 28 and 53
and standard deviations of 5.2 and 12.3, respectively. Compute

(i) the expected value of T

(b) Scores (A; ofcandidates on an aptitude test for enrolment at a certain university are normally
distributed with mean(µ)= 100 and standard deviation(cr)= 15.

(i) Determine the percentage of candidates who obtained a score less than 80.

(ii) Determine the percentage of candidates who obtained a score greater than 120.

(4 marks]

(iii) A particular faculty of a university accepts only candidates with scores in the top
6%. Determine the minimum score, Q, that qualifies a candidate for acceptance
in that faculty.

5. (a) A block of mass 8 kg is pulled upwards along a rough plane, inclined at 30° , by a force of
95 N. The coefficient of friction force between the block and the inclined plane is 0.4.

(i) Draw a fully labelled diagram to illustrate ALL the forces acting on the block.

(ii) Calculate the acceleration of the block.

(b) The following diagram shows a clock, weighing 40 N, that is suspended from a ceiling
by a light inextensible string. There is a horizontal force with magnitude 15 N acting on
the clock. The clock is held in place with the light inextensible string remaining vertical
by another force, T, which makes an angle of e degrees to the vertical.

(c ) A car of mass 1800 kg travelling at a velocity of20 ms- 1, strikes a smooth vertical wall
horizontally_ Ifthe car bounces off the wall at a velocity of 14 ms- 1, calculate the impulse
ofthe car.

(d) A particle moves in a straight line with an acceleration that is proportional to t2, where t is
the time in seconds. When t = 3, the particle has a velocity ofS ms- 1, and when t = 6, the
particle has a velocity of 10 ms- 1• Derive an expression for the velocity ofthe particle at
any time.

6. (a) Two particles, of mass 12 kg and 8 kg, are connected by a light inextensible string which
passes over a fixed smooth weightless pulley. Both particles are initially held at the same
horizontal level, 100 metres above the ground, with the string taut. The particles are then
released to move freely under gravity.

(i) Determine the acceleration of the system.

(ii) Determine the tension in the string.

(iii) Determine the distance travelled by EACH particle after 6 seconds.

(iv) Determine the velocity of a 12 kg particle just before it hits the ground, if it is
disconnected from the string 6 seconds after the system is released.

(b) A ball, of mass 6 kg, is dropped from the top of a cliff which is 15 m high.

(i) Calculate the potential energy of the ball when it has fallen to 5 m from the top of
the cliff.

(ii) Determine the velocity of the ball when it hits the ground.

(iii) Prove that, in a closed system, the change in the velocity of an object in free fall
is independent of its mass.

(c) A car of mass 1400 kg travelling at 40 ms- 1, has its speed reduced to 15 ms- 1 by a constant
braking force over a distance of 60 m_
