This Defence Standard supersedes Def Stan 13-81/1 dated 1 May 1975

i This Defence Standard specifies the requirements for Calcium Silicide Sizes 100, 200, 240 for Ministry of Defence use. It has been prepared by the Explosives Subcommittee of the Defence Engineering and Equipment Standardization Committee. ii This Standard has been agreed by the authorities concerned with its use and shall be incorporated whenever relevant in all future designs, contracts, orders etc and whenever practicable by amendment to those already in existence. If any difficulty arises which prevents application of the Defence Standard, the Directorate of Standardization shall be informed so that a remedy may be sought. iii Any enquiries regarding this Standard in relation to an invitation to tender or a contract in which it is invoked are to be addressed to the responsible technical or supervising authority named in the invitation to tender or contract. iv This Standard has been devised for the use of the Crown and of its contractors in the execution of contracts for the Crown and, subject to the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977, the Crown will not be liable in any way whatever (including but without limitation negligence on the part of the Crown its servants or agents) where the Standard is used for other purposes.

1 Scope This Standard specifies the requirements for calcium silicide for use in the manufacture of certain initiatory, pyrotechnic and smoke compositions. 2 WARNING This Standard calls for the use injurious to health if adequate to technical suitability and in user from statutory obligations of manufacture or use. 3 Related Documents 3.1 The following documents and publications are referred to in this Standard: BS 410 Laboratory Method M805 Specification for Test Sieves Examination of Calcium Silicide of substances and/or procedures that may be precautions are not taken. 4 Description The material shall consist essentially of calcium silicide in the form of a fine powder. It shall be free from grit, foreign matter and visible impurities. 5 Information to be Supplied by the Purchaser The purchaser shall state clearly in the contract or order the size (eg 100) of the material required and the quantity required for each container. 6 Test Requirements Samples taken from any portion of the supply shall be in accordance with clause 4 and, when tested by the method specified, shall comply with the following requirements:

Quality Assurance

8.1 The Quality Assurance Authority reserves the right to sample and test the material and/or its ingredients at any time during manufacture. 8.2 If any sample taken from the consignment be found not to comply with the requirements of this Standard, the whole consignment may be rejected. 9 Containers 9.1 Unless the form of packaging is specified in the contract or order the material shall be supplied in sound clean and dry watertight containers suitable for the product. The use of contaminated containers will render the whole consignment liable to rejection. After filling, each container shall be securely closed. 9.2 Each container shall be legibly and durably marked according to statutory requirements and with at least the following details: Designation viz: Calcium Silicide (size as appropriate) Defence Standard number viz: Def Stan 13-81/2 Contract or order number Distinctive lot and/or batch number Quantity of contents Date of manufacture Manufacturers initials or recognized trade mark Any additional markings called for in the contract or order
