Practical-1

TOPIC: SETS
1. Objective: To represent set theoretic operations using venn diagrams.
2. Material required: Scale, Thick sheet of white paper, Pencil, Eraser, compass, Glue.
3. Procedure:
1) From a sheet of paper, cut 10 rectangular strips of same dimensions (9 cm x 7cm).
2) Paste the rectangular strips.
3) Write the symbol U on the right top corner of each rectangle.
4) Draw a pair of intersecting circles one of radius 2.5 cm and other of radius 3cm on first eight
rectangular strips.
5) Draw a pair of disjoint circles one of radius 2.5 cm and other of radius 3cm on ninth
rectangular strip.
6) Draw a pair of circles one inside the other of radii 2 cm and 3cm on tenth rectangular strip.
7) Shade/color the different portions for the different operations.
4. Demonstration:
1) Denote the universal set by U, which is represented by the rectangle in each figure.
2) Circles A nd B are the subsets of U
3) A/ and B/ are complements of A and B respectively.
4) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. I represents AB
5) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. II represents AB
6) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. III represents A/
7) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. IV represents B/
8) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. V represents (AB)/
9) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. VI represents (AB)/
10) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. VII represents BA/ or (B-A)
11) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. VIII represents A/B
12) fig. IX shows AB = 
13) fig. X shows AB
5. Observation:
1) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. I represents AB
2) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. II represents AB
3) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. III represents A/
4) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. IV represents B/
5) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. V represents (AB)/
6) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. VI represents (AB)/
7) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. VII represents BA/ or (B-A)
8) Colored/Shaded portion of fig. VIII represents A/B
9) fig. IX shows AB = 
10) fig. X shows AB
6. Conclusion: Through venn diagram one can represent set theoretic operation
7. Applications: Theoretic representation of venn diagrams are helpful in solving day to day life problems
