THE EASTER VIGIL in the HOLY NIGHT - April 11
VIGILIA PASCUAL
PART I: SERVICE OF LIGHT
Blessing of the Fire and Preparation of the Easter Candle /
Bendición del Fuego
A large fire is prepared outside of the Church. The Priest and the people assemble there with the other
ministers (carrying the Easter candle.) The celebrant then greets the assembly in the usual manner and
briefly instructs them about the vigil in these words:
Dear brethren, on this most sacred night, in which Our Lord Jesus Christ passed over from death to life,
the Church calls upon her sons and daughters, scattered throughout the world, to come together to watch
and pray. If we keep the memorial of the Lord’s paschal solemnity in this way, listening to his word and
celebrating his mysteries, then we shall have the sure hope of sharing his triumph over death and living
with him in God.
Then the fire is blessed.
Let us pray. O God, who through your Son bestowed upon the faithful the fire of your glory, sanctify this
new fire, we pray, and grant that, by these paschal celebrations, we may be so inflamed with heavenly
desires, that with minds made pure we may attain festivities of unending splendor. Through Christ our
Lord. ALL: Amen.
After the blessing of the new fire, the celebrant cuts a cross in the wax with a stylus. Then he traces the
Greek letter Alpha above the cross, the letter Omega below, and the numerals of the current year
between the arms of the cross.
Meanwhile he says:
1. Christ yesterday and today;
2. the Beginning and the End;
3. the Alpha;
4. and the Omega; 2 0
5. All time belongs to Him;
6. and all the ages.
7. To Him be glory and power;
8. through every age and for ever. Amen.
When the cross and other marks have been made, the celebrant may insert five grains of incense in the
candle. He does this in the form of a cross saying:
1. By His holy 1
2. and glorious wounds,
3. may Christ the Lord 4 2 5
4. guard us
5. and protect us. Amen. 3
The celebrant lights the candle from the new fire, saying:
May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

Procession / Procesión
Then all enter the Church, led by the Deacon with the Easter candle. The thurifer precedes the Easter
candle in the procession. At the Church door, the Deacon lifts the candle high and the Priest sings the
acclamation:

Cristo, luz del mundo Demos gracias a Dios

12
All light their candles from the Easter candle and continue in the procession. When the Priest
arrives at the middle of the Church and again at the Altar, he faces the people and sings the
acclamation again.

The Easter Proclamation / Pregón Pascual (The Exsultet)

The Deacon places the Easter candle in its stand. The book and the candle are incensed.
The Priest then sings the Easter Proclamation. All stand and hold lighted candles.

Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven,

Exult, let Angel ministers of God exult, let the trumpet of salvation
Sound aloud our mighty King’s triumph!
Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King,
Let all corners of the earth be glad, knowing an end to gloom and darkness.
Rejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice, arrayed with the lightning of his glory,
Let this holy building shake with joy, filled with the mighty voices of the peoples.
Therefore, dearest friends, standing in the awesome glory of this holy light,
invoke with me, I ask you, the mercy of God almighty, that he,
who has been pleased to number me, though unworthy, among the Levites,
may pour into me his light unshadowed, that I may sing this candle’s perfect praises.
The Priest leads the following sung responses:

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with your spirit.

V. Lift up your hearts. R. We lift them up to the Lord.
V. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. R. It is right and just.

PRIEST:

ALL: Amen.

The candles are extinguished.

All are seated.
Las velas se apagan. Todos se sientan.

13

THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION
Celebration of Baptismal Liturgy / Liturgia Bautismal

Following the homily, the candidates for Baptism, along with their godparents, are called forth
from the assembly. The invitation to prayer and the Litany of the Saints follow. The Priest
addresses the assembly, asking them to join in the prayer for the candidates.

Dearly beloved, with one heart and one soul, let us by our prayers come to the aid of
these our brothers and sisters in their blessed hope, so that, as they approach the font
of rebirth, the almighty Father may bestow on them all his merciful help.

Blessing of the Baptismal Water / Bendición del Agua Bautismal
Facing the font containing the water, the Priest then blesses the water which will be used for Baptism

Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith / Renucia al Pecado y Profesión de Fe

The Priest queries the candidates for Baptism. The candidates are asked to renounce sin and evil.
The candidates respond to the inquiries with the words: “I do.”
Following the renunciation of sin, the candidates are named and presented by the Godparents to the
Priest who again questions the candidates.
The candidates respond to the inquiries with the words: “I do.”
Baptism / Bautismo
The candidates are baptized immediately after their professions of faith by the pouring of water as
the Priest prays: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Presentation of a Lighted Candle / Entrega de un Cirio Encendido

The Priest takes the Easter candle in his hands or touches it, saying:
“Godparents, please come forward to give to the newly baptized the light of Christ.”

A godparent of the newly baptized goes to the celebrant, lights a candle from the Easter candle, then
presents it to the newly baptized. Then the celebrant says to the newly baptized:
“You have been enlightened by Christ. Walk always as a child of the light and keep the flame of faith
alive in your hearts. When the Lord comes, may you go out to meet Him with all the Saints in the
heavenly kingdom.”
ALL: Amen.
Response “Christ Be Our Light” Farrell
This is the night of new beginnings
This is the night when heaven meets earth.
This is the night filled with God’s glory,
promise of our new birth

Now will the fire kindled in darkness

burn to dispel the shadows of night
Star of the morning, Jesus our Savior
you are the world’s true light.

17
Renewal of Baptismal Promises / Renovación de las Promesas Bautismales
After the celebration of Baptism, the Priest invites all those present, including the candidates for
reception into full communion, to renew their baptismal promises. During the renewal, all stand.
Candles are lighted.
Dear brethren, through the Paschal Mystery we have been buried with Christ in Baptism, so that we
may rise with Him in newness of life. And so, now that we have completed our Lenten observance, let
us renew the promises we made in Baptism, when we rejected Satan and his works and promised to
serve God faithfully in His holy Catholic Church and so I ask you:
The Priest continues with the following:
Do you renounce Satan?
I do.
And all his works?
I do.
And all his empty show?
I do.
The Priest then continues with the Profession of Faith.
Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?
I do.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered death and was buried, rose again from the dead, and is seated at the right hand of the
Father?
I do.
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?
I do.
The Priest concludes:
And may almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us new birth by
water and the Holy Spirit and bestowed on us forgiveness of our sins, keep us by his grace, in
Christ Jesus our Lord, for eternal life.
Amen.
The Priest sprinkles the whole assembly with the blessed baptismal water, while all join the choir in
singing the refrain of the following hymn:
“Water of Life / Agua de Vida” Cortez

At the conclusion of the sprinkling, the candles are extinguished.

18
Celebration of Reception / Celebración de la Recepción
The Priest invites the candidates for reception, along with their sponsors, to come into the sanctuary
and before the community to make a profession of faith.
The Priest begins by addressing the candidates by name.
(Candidate’s name), of your own free will you have asked to be received into the full
communion of the Catholic Church. You have made your decision after careful thought under
the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I now invite you to come forward with your sponsors and in the
presence of this community to profess the Catholic faith. In this faith you will be one with us
for the first time at the Eucharistic table of the Lord Jesus, the sign of the Church’s unity.
When the candidates and their sponsors have taken their places, the Priest asks the candidates to
make the following profession of faith.
I believe and profess all that the holy Catholic Church believes, teaches, and proclaims to be
revealed by God?
Then the candidates, accompanied by their sponsors, will be received into the Church as the celebrant
extends his right hand over them saying:
(Candidate’s name), the Lord receives you into the Catholic Church. His loving kindness has
led you here, so that in the unity of the Holy Spirit you may have full communion with us in the
faith that you have professed in the presence of His family.

Celebration of Confirmation / Celebración de la Confirmación

The newly Baptized and professed, along with their sponsors, are now called forward to be
confirmed. They stand before the Priest and he addresses them in these words:
My dear candidates for confirmation, born again in Christ by Baptism, you have become members of
Christ and of His priestly people. Now you are to share in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit among us,
the Spirit sent by the Lord upon His apostles at Pentecost and given by them and their successors to
the baptized. The promised strength of the Holy Spirit, which you are to receive, will make you more
like Christ and help you to be witnesses to his suffering, Death, and Resurrection. It will strengthen
you to be active members of the Church and to build up the Body of Christ in faith and love.
The Priest then addresses the rest of the assembly.
My dear friends, let us pray to God our Father, that He will pour out the Holy Spirit on these candidates
for Confirmation to strengthen them with His gifts and anoint them to be more like Christ, the Son of
God.
All pray briefly in silence.

Laying on of Hands / Imposición de las Manos

The Priest holds his hands outstretched over the entire group of those to be confirmed and says the
following prayer:
All-powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your
sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send Your Holy Spirit upon them to be their
helper and guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and
courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your
presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
ALL: Amen.

19
Anointing With Chrism / Unción con el Crisma
The Priest will come to each candidate and their sponsors. The sponsors will place their right
hand on the shoulder of the candidate. The sponsor gives the candidate’s name to the celebrant.
The celebrant anoints each candidate with Sacred Chrism (a perfumed oil), using these words:
(Candidate’s name), be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. ALL: Amen.
Priest: Peace be with you.
Response: And with your spirit.
After all have received the sacrament of Confirmation, the newly confirmed, accompanied by
their sponsors, are led to their places in the assembly. Celebrating the Eucharist, the center of
Christian liturgy, is the climax of the neophytes initiation.
In profound joy we celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter and these new candidates,
who will today receive their First Holy Communion.
