On the scale of one (1) to five (5), five (5) being the highest, how would you rate the
importance of culture in the success of the communication process? Elaborate your
answer.
I will rate it 5 because culture is highly important to have a successful communication
process. Culture and communication mold each other and they are inseparable. Our
culture plays an important role in shaping the style of our communication. We are able
to create and share our culture because of communication. Our cultural background
dictates us who we will communicate with, how the communication process will be, and
what will be the topic of communication. Different cultures have different meanings of
words, behaviors and gestures. Because of our differences in terms of cultural
background, each of us may have a different interpretation and understanding about a
certain message. For example, A certain joke may seem funny for you, but that joke
might not be understandable in some cultures. Our cultural differences can create
misunderstandings and conflicts between speakers if we are not careful with our words
and actions, that’s why it is important to be open-minded and be respectful towards
other cultures. Overall, culture plays a huge role in order to have a successful
communication, because of culture we are able to have meaningful interaction with
other people.
