PK is a film directed by Rajkumar Hirani starring Aamir Khan and Anushka
Sharma released last 2014, is about an alien, PK, who gets stuck in planet Earth after
his communicating device gets stolen. Here he meets a Jaggu, a reporter who, with
him, embarks on a journey to retrieve the PK’s device in order for him to return to his
home planet. The movie focuses on religious affiliations and shows the distinction of
each religion and its practices.
In the movie, there is a scene where PK wanders around the town asking
where he can find this so-called “God”. Numerous people pointed him to different
places of worshipping, but during his search he seems to fall more and more
confused with the concept of God. During his journey to find God, he meets different
kinds of people who advise him to do certain things/tasks to persuade the god of
every faith. He follows their advice, but to no avail, not one god answered him. This
teaches us that there is only one God and we should only believe in him, not the
god men have made. We are brought into this world “naked” and with no prior
knowledge about the world and how things work. We are made to believe what the
society wants us to believe, good or bad. There are numerous people who claim to
have heard the Word of God and are spreading it to the people, but there is no
certainty that what is being said is true. God comes to us in various forms, whether it
be through our dreams or the people around us, but it is up to us how we interpret
this message and act upon it. It is still in our jurisdiction how we perceive these
messages sent by God, so there is absolutely no guarantee that the “word” of God
that is being passed around is true. It is important that we identify the true meaning
of God’s Words with no external forces affecting the way we think and act because
this not only helps us attain a sense of freedom but also gives us time to think and
develop our own understanding who God really is (Sessanna et al., 2007). This is
evident in the film wherein a worshiper asked Godman Tapaswi Baba what he
should sacrifice in order for his paralized wife to heal and Tapaswi said that he should
travel to the grand temple where his problems will all be solved. To this, PK
questioned the “word” of God Tapawski supposedly heard. Why would God tell you
to embark on a journey for 8 days to a temple where you are to repeat the same
problem and then and there shall God fix it for you? If God is really who Tapawski is
communicating with, He would not let His children suffer a great amount of time
only to answer his question he could’ve answered in the original place they were in.
There are various people who try to fool people into believing that they are the
instruments of God used to spread His Holy Word, when in fact it is them selfishly
gaining power. We live in fear helplessly grasping for any sign that may indicate that
He is talking to us and because of this need to be answered, we often believe the
interpretation of those around us neverminding if it's good or evil. As it is rightfully
said in the movie, “God made us and He gave each of us the ability to reason and
think logically”. We should use the skills He gave us and use these to question
everything around us. As Rene Descartes once said, “I think, therefore I am” and this
points out that to be human, we should question everything we encounter and not
believe what other people have said. Oftentimes there comes a point in life where
we question every single thing that surrounds us and this is what happened to PK in
the movie. He followed every single advice of priests and commoners and to no avail,
he did not receive the answer he was looking for. There is a scene in the movie
wherein PK enters this room filled with various statues of gods worshipped all over
the world, he then proceeds to talk to them confessing that he is confused. He
proceeds to ask what he has done wrong for his cries not to reach the Almighty
Father. This is an extremely emotional scene, it depicts how somewhere along our
life, there will come a time where we break down and just ask why, why is this
happening to us? Why is it that no matter what I do, there seems to be no endpoint?
PK then asks if he should bend over backwards just for Him to hear his pleas. During
his journey in discovering the different religions and their ways of worshiping, he has
come to the end remaining clueless as ever. He then said that he would do
everything and anything God wants, just let him go home. After this moment of
vulnerability, he still remains strong and continues his journey to find God
persistently giving out missing posters to everyone he meets. This teaches us to
never give up no matter how much suffering we are experiencing right now. Even
when we have hit rock bottom and there seems to be no way out, God is here, He
will always be here. He has a plan and He can hear you, it just isn't time for Him to
answer you yet. God may not answer, but that does not mean He doesn’t exist, He
isn't answering because it is not the right time yet. We should have faith that He
will never abandon us because He is our Father and we are His children.
Spirituality has become such a big deal in nursing especially in self-healing
(Sessanna et al., 2007). I believe that in order for a person to heal fully, there should
be inner peace and acceptance of one’s fate. We should have faith that God has
given these challenges to us because we are capable of dealing and overcoming
whatever comes our way. Spirituality plays a big role in a patient’s overall health,
therefore is needed to completely heal the body. When we have spirituality, there
will come a time where we feel content with our lives and have a sense of purpose. I
personally have felt a great distance with the Lord, but once I opened my eyes and
arms to welcome God into my life, I felt a sense of being whole. It felt like matter
where we are and what we are doing, God will never let us suffer without a cause. He
has made a plan for us and all He ever wants is to love us as much as He can. He
loved us so much that He sacrificed His only son to pay for our sins, and this is clear
proof that He would do anything to be with us some day. God did not answer to PK’s
pleas because PK had a mission he needed to fulfill during his stay on earth, and that
was to teach everyone he encountered to love one another. We are brought into this
world with no knowledge of the outside world, but God has already made a plan for
us even before we became fetuses inside our mother’s wombs.
Religion practiced and believed in various ways, some slaughter cows, while
others worship them. Some wear slippers inside their place of worshipping, while
others remove their shoes and clean their feet before entering. All of these vary, but
one thing is for sure, there is only one God and He comes in different forms and sizes.
Rajkumar Hirani’s PK film became an eyeopener of the different religions in the
world, exposing various takes on who God is and their own way of worshipping. The
film became a reminder that we should remain humble despite all the hardships we
have and will face as we are just specs in a mighty container of all of God’s creations.
