Determine what the letters
nMIiCnReOISeCtOtPErs mean by
crossing out 10 letters to reveal the
mystery word then give the
definition of the word.

Objective:

To identify parts of the
microscope and their
functions.

The Microscope
Microscope

Microscope is a _____________
device used
for ______________
magnifying object that
cannot be _________
seen by the naked
___________.

Microscopy

Is the scientific field of
study which is used to study
minute structures and
objects by a microscope.
The History
The historical development of microscopy began
when the Romans discovered the lens during the
1st century. 
It is then followed by the invention of the first
compound microscope by Zacharias Janssen
during the 1590s.
The History
Anton van Leeuwenhoek crafted his own
simple microscope that made him see

bacteria and other microscopic specimens.

The Parts of a
Microscope

Ocular Lens/Eyepiece

It allows the
viewer to look
at the enlarged
image of the
specimen.
Body Tube/Draw Tube

The body
tube holds the
objective
lenses and the
ocular lens at
the proper
distance.
Arm

It allows you
to hold the
microscope to
transfer the
microscope
from one place
to another.
Revolving Nose Piece

It allows the
shifting of
objectives from
the low-power
objectives to the
high-power
objectives.
Objective Lenses

It magnifies an
image under
the
microscope.
Objective Lenses

LPO- allows you
to see the general
view of the
specimen.
HPO- allows you
to see the
detailed parts of
the specimen.

Stage

This is where
the glass slide
is mounted.
Cover slip

Glass slide
Stage Clips

These 2 clips
hold the
slide/specimen
in place on
the stage.
Diaphragm

It regulates the amount of light that will pass
through the stage. It is attached to a
condenser lens.

Turn to let more light in or to

make dimmer.
Light Source

 Projects light upwards through the diaphragm, the
specimen and the lenses
 Some have lights, others have mirrors where you
must move the mirror to reflect light
Coarse Adjustment
Knob

It focuses
the specimen
under the
low power
objective.
Fine Adjustment Knob

It focuses
the
specimen
under the
high power
objective.

Inclination Joint

It allows
you to tilt
the
microscope
into
different
angles.
Base

 It supports the
entire body of
the microscope.
Valuing

Microscope can be compared to a “family
system” and the parts function together to
sustain the purpose of the microscope. If the
microscope is like the family system, then
what will happen to the system if one
member is missing or not properly working?
Will the system survive if one of the
members is missing?
