TAKE A SEAT
We’re excited to see that one of our favourite TV presenters,
George Clarke, has teamed up with Sofology to create a new
range of comfy seating! The collaboration includes two styles:
Midland Hill, which is inspired by the sleek silhouettes of the Art
Deco period, and Brantford, which takes it style cues from one
of George’s favourite design movements, Arts & Crafts. Choose
from a three-seater sofa, a wingback chair, bench footstool and
luxurious armchair. With George’s architectural background and
Sofology’s expertise in upholstery, this range combines both
contemporary and classic style with comfort and durability, and
will work in any style of home, from period houses to modern
builds. Prices start at £579, sofology.co.uk.

as I like a more sophisticated look.
HOW I MADE IT MY OWN
After painting the whole house white, I
worked my way around the rooms, one
at a time, adding traditional panelling
and Scandi neutrals. I finished off the
look with sumptuous furniture and
glamorous touches to create a home
that reflects my own style.
MY FAVOURITE PART
I love the bold look of the dining area

‘After painting this room white, we added

of a trend at the time, as everyone seemed to

if I change my mind on any of my designs,
this will still work. I wanted an elegant feel in

was a really bold move for me. For a glam

a long-haired brush, apply the wash onto

‘We originally got this IKEA island for extra storage. I decided to
give it a mini makeover by painting the white base black and
then adding the stools, from Amazon, to create a breakfast bar,’
says Abigail. The industrial-style clock from The Range and the
chrome pendant lamps from B&Q add to the look

Kitchen
‘The kitchen has a farmhouse feel with wooden worktops,
which isn’t a style I would have chosen. However, it was all
in good condition so we felt we couldn’t just start ripping
everything out. Instead, we lightened the wood with
varnish and then chose grey subway tiles to create a more
modern look. I then added the black handles to add an
industrial touch and I think these little changes have given
the room a completely different vibe, for just a few pounds.
We decided to replace the old laminate floor with these
marble tiles, though we were out when the flooring guy
did the work, and he ripped up some original parquet from
under the laminate while doing the job. I was gutted when
I found out, but it was too late! We put in the island, which

Arabella's room
‘Arabella wanted a Disney princess room. I decided
to mirror the traditional style of the panelling
downstairs. When it came to decorate, the paint
was old and had gone yellow, but it seemed a
waste to throw it away. So, I gave it a good mix
and put it on the walls, and it’s actually created a
lovely, slightly softer shade of white. I like to change
things up a lot so look for ways to create temporary
effects, and I didn’t want to use screws to attach
the tie backs for the curtains so I used damage-free
adhesive hooks that can be removed in seconds.’

Master bedroom
‘We used to travel a lot before the pandemic but when
flights were cancelled, I wanted to bring that hotel luxe
feel into our home. This room is actually quite small, so I
had to be smart with the furniture. We chose sliding doors
for the wardrobes from IKEA, which was an immediate
space-saver, and I chose the mirrored version as it makes
the room feel bigger. But also, the clothes hang facing out,
so the wardrobe is shallower than average, which gives us
extra space to walk around the end of the bed. The bed,
from The Luxury Bed Company, makes such a statement,
and we loved this oversized headboard, with its high-end
designer look, so we asked them to make it in blue.’

Brighten up your living space and be colour
confident with these style tips
If wallpapering your walls is too much of a commitment
for you, go for patterned accessories, such as cushions,
throws, artwork and rugs instead that you easily swap
and change.
For a quick and easy way to update a room, simply paint
a wall in one bold colour. Use tester pots first to check if
the colour suits the room and remember, it’s just paint – it
can always be changed.
If you’re mixing different patterns in the same space,
stick to just two or three colours to avoid the look
becoming too overwhelming.
When wallpapering one feature wall in a bold pattern,
pick out one of the colours featured to paint the
remaining walls to create a cohesive scheme, or add
accessories using similar shades.
Use large-scale pattens to make a small room feel
bigger. Stripes used horizontally, for example, can make
the room feel wider and vertical stripes will make a room
feel taller. Mix different sizes of pattern, too, as this will
add depth and interest.
Think about what tones go together. Clashing colours
can be great, but if you want big blocks of colour, team
them with neutral shades to give your eyes a break.

WHAT I LEARNED...
Don’t be afraid to use lots of pattern and colour in your home. I
realised that you need to decorate for the here and now and not worry
about future buyers liking your taste. It’s your house and the likelihood
is if you love it, others will too.
Try and be patient when you have to repair damaged walls. It pays to
do any repairs properly first time around, so you don’t have to revisit the
same problem after a few months. Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest
tradesperson and pick someone who’s been personally recommended.
Try to think of the house as a whole and choose colour schemes that
link each room together so it feels cohesive as you move around it.

WHERE WE LIVE
Our home is a two-bedroom Victorian
stone-built terrace. It was built in 1870
in Dronfield, Derbyshire.
WHAT WE WANTED TO CHANGE
We hated the white plastic bathroom
cabinets and have been slowly
replacing white skirting boards for
natural wood. The cream kitchen also
needed a makeover to make it feel
more like a country cottage.
HOW WE MADE IT OUR OWN
We love natural materials and have
incorporated lots of texture through
plant pots, throws, cushions and even
textured paint. Having over 40 plants
brings it to life as well.
OUR FAVOURITE PART
The kitchen. It’s practical and the rustic
farmhouse style helps create a calm
atmosphere, making the whole house
feel more like a country cottage.

the kitchen-diner. ‘The table came

chunky shelves for Kilner jars to
free up as much worktop space
as possible. ‘Having come from
a small kitchen previously, I’ve
learnt to be clever with space,’
she says. ‘The tiles are painted
almost exactly the same colour
as the walls, so they just blend in’

‘We adapted this old charity
shop dresser into a four-storey
hutch for our house rabbit,’
says Katie. ‘I moved a few doors
around, added mesh with nail
tacks and tiled some sections,
as well as laying laminate on the
base and painting the inside in
rabbit-friendly water-based paint’

Kitchen
‘Our biggest change has been in the kitchen, which we
transformed on a shoestring budget of around £500. Although we
loved the flagstone floor, the kitchen itself was a hodge-podge
of cream cupboards and it felt quite disjointed. Mixing our own
colour for the walls and painting the tiles, cabinets and oven has
made a huge difference, while removing modern worktops and
replacing them with natural wood has given us the rustic country
vibe we were looking for. Finally, we added rustic shelves to help
the unusual layout of kitchen cabinets work better. Now it flows
well, feels bigger and looks more like a proper country kitchen.
At some point we might replace the entire kitchen, but we’re not
in any hurry as we love the look we’ve managed to achieve.’

‘We love getting the most out of our money, so we built our own shelves for £36 to create
a rustic feature wall in the living room,’ says Katie. ‘I’m always tinkering so having another
area I can play around with is great. Installing a wood-burning stove has made a massive
difference as it feels much more homely now. It’s perfect for colder days and we enjoy lighting
the fire and relaxing after a dog walk. The artwork is by Gabe’s artist grandfather, Reg Boulton’

this is a newish piece of furniture, it
still fits our rustic style,’ says Katie.
‘Luckily our cast-iron shoe rack fits
perfectly underneath’
‘This room was originally cream, but
to cosy it up we wanted more earthy
hues. Gabe picked the colour for the
chimney breast and alcoves. The rest
of the room is a textured paint with
more colours mixed into it, as the old
plaster is quite textured anyway. The
floorboards had already been sanded
and varnished, but we did replace the
skirting boards with wooden ones
and stripped back years of old paint
on the windowsill. The stove, fitted in
2020, was the biggest change. We were
thrifty by having it fitted in summer,
when demand is lower, which saved us
money. Luckily, we already had quite
a few pieces of old furniture that fit in
well. Some, like the chest of drawers
next to the fire, were restained to match
the floor and we also sanded and
stained the mantelpiece. Creating the
hexagonal wooden shelves was a time-
consuming job. We made cardboard
templates first to work out the angles
and mapped it out on the floor.
It’s a big wall and I wanted to break it
up, so this is a good way to get plants
and photos on the wall, as well as little
trinkets that are personal to us.’

February 2022 51
Main bedroom
‘With cream walls and one purple feature wall
behind the bed, this room needed a more
homely look. I quite like a darkish bedroom
as it’s more relaxing and there’s lots of storage
already, so I didn’t want it to feel cluttered. With
that in mind, we opted for a textured stone
effect on two of the walls. I love how it looks
against the natural wood of the door frame.
When I saw this bamboo ladder for £10 on
Facebook Marketplace, I snapped it up.
It’s great for hanging throws.’

‘The feature wall is full of photos from holidays in

Scotland, the Lake District and Pembrokeshire,’ says
Katie. ‘I wanted to have some of our favourite memories
on the wall behind the bed, so we see them before
going to sleep. The keys are from my grandad’s garage’

Paint an ombré wall

HOW TO...
Give your home some interest with this
easy-to-do paint technique
Choose three colours – a lighter one for the top third, a
medium shade for the middle and a darker one for the bottom.
Four colours will give you an even more gradual blend.
A good starting point is to pick a favourite shade and then
choose the two or three adjacent shades on the colour swatch.
Your aim is for the three colours to blend into one another
rather than look like clear stripes. Try experimenting on lining
paper first to get the technique right.
Tape around the area to ombre – one feature wall works best
– and draw a pencil or chalk line with a spirit level or plum line
where you want the colours to blend into each other.
Use a different roller for each section but stop a few inches on ‘Our sofa bed was free on Facebook Marketplace

Bathroom
‘My dream would be to have a roll-top bath, but it just wouldn’t
fit in our tiny bathroom. We’ve made the best of it though and
have tried to make it more inkeeping with the rest of the house.
We found a chest for £40 on Facebook Marketplace and turned
it into a vanity unit. It was a hard job turning the front panels into
doors, cutting out a hole for the sink, shortening the drawers and
chopping off the back to fit the space. I might stencil the floor in
future, but it already looks miles better.’

HOW TO
WORK THIS LOOK
£7 per metre, IKEA

l The base palette for this look is a velvety blend of muted tones.
Look out for paints that have soft grey undertones to keep the scheme
feeling cosy. You can spot these colours by looking for shades that feel
pale, but not bright. Choose flat matt, chalky or lightly textured finishes
for a warm and tactile effect.
l Enhance the cosy, laid-back feel with rustic textiles and relaxed
upholstery. Fabrics that have an irregular or strong, visible weave create
subtle patterns that add interest to the pared-back palette. Long-
lasting natural fibres create a classic look that improves with age.
l Choose furniture with softly rounded silhouettes. Oval tables,

HOW TO
WORK THIS LOOK
l Exposed brick walls are the key element for creating this
look, but you don’t need to start stripping plaster off if you
want to keep your revamp low key. High-quality, digitally
printed wallpapers give the impression of exposed walls
without the DIY and dust. If you’d prefer a more tactile effect,
try brick slips instead. These tile-like slices are glued to walls
and the gaps filled in with mortar for a realistic look that’s
worthy of any NY loft space.
l Pair rustic brick walls with other distressed finishes for
a lived-in feel. Concrete-look wallpapers add an extra
dimension and weathered floorboards complete the effect.
Cover part of the floor with a large-scale rug to prevent the
room feeling echoey and cold.
l Let the vintage-style walls and floors take centre stage by Cotswold Scandi bed frame, £499; Azzate

l The key to stopping this scheme from feeling overly fussy is to keep
to a strict colour palette. We’ve used purples with a touch of pink in this
moodboard, but it would be easy to re-create the effect with blue and
an accent of teal, or yellows with a hint of peach.

his look is a celebration of colour and the way it
makes us feel: from energetic yellows to restful
deep blues. Pick out a combination of three to four
hues and stick to these colours throughout your room
for a pulled-together effect. Pink, yellow, teal and lilac
are fashion favourites for 2022, but choose colours that
you love to create a look that lasts. Be brave about
where you apply your colour and paint in big, confident
blocks. Push past the edges of the walls to apply paint on
the floor, ceilings and across corners. Stop where it feels
right for you – don’t let the room’s dimensions restrict
your vision! Try out simple patterns too, such as stripes
and playful scallops.
Let the bold tones take centre stage by sticking
to flat matt finishes on furniture and accessories. The
same goes for fabrics – choose closely woven textures
with finishes that are smooth to the touch. On curved
surfaces, such as rounded table legs or vases, a gentle
sheen can look beautiful too.

WAildflowers Bring the outdoors in and create a calming
sanctuary with this gentle, nature-inspired scheme
delicate palette of barely-there shades sets the tone
for this serene scheme. Choose warm neutrals and
pastel shades with a chalky finish. Green is the key
colour to bring in botanical vibes, so introduce it on your
walls, or large soft furnishings, such as rugs and curtains. You
can then bring in soft pink, taupe and blue in accessories or
occasional furniture.
Look out for woven pieces to create a richly textured
effect. These could be thickly woven water hyacinth or
elegantly curved bamboo or rattan. Crochet and macramé
pieces are perfect for this look, too. They’ve been a high-
street favourite for the last few years and their nostalgic
popularity shows no sign of waning. Pair natural materials
with dried blooms and houseplants, then carry this botanical
theme into your patterns by choosing loose, trailing designs.

White Boucle, £129, Cult Furniture space is likely to be looking a little
more cluttered and crammed
post-Christmas. The key to getting
organised is not to try and declutter
the entire house in one single day,
as this would be overwhelming as
well as unrealistic.
‘Start small,’ advises decluttering
professional Vicky. ‘You’ll be able to
complete manageable spaces and
finish on a high, whereas trying to
tackle areas that are too big in one
go can end in disappointment and
negative feelings.’
If you only have an hour to spare,
break it down into bite-size
challenges: start on one cupboard in
the kitchen, perhaps blitz the
bathroom shelves, or make it your
mission to clear off the kitchen
counter. When you’ve finished that
area, tick it off on a ‘to-do’ list and
you’ll feel great for accomplishing
the task and motivated to start on
the next area. It’s more beneficial to
have done a deep declutter of one
area than little bits here and there to
make a lasting difference.

Vicky’s top tip:
BOXES AT THE READY
There are many decluttering mantras
and methods to help you sort your
stuff. You might have heard of the
‘spark joy’ movement, a method of
accessing what’s important to you,
and then there’s the 12-12-12
Challenge (12 items to throw away/
recycle, 12 to donate, and 12 to be
returned to their proper home), and
the one-in-one-out rule. The simple
four box technique is a firm favourite
with the HomeStyle team. Before
you start your decluttering process
get four boxes and label them: ‘store’,
‘recycle/bin’, ‘charity’ and ‘keep’.
‘When you’ve chosen your area to
tackle, empty the space and lay out
the contents into the categories,’
advises Vicky. ‘Then give the area
you’ve worked on a good clean to
signify a fresh start.’ Don’t overfill the
‘store’ box. If you never use it or it’s
not of great sentimental value – and

CLEAR THE DECKS

Blitz the bedroom floor of toys, clothes, bedlinen and books with a
handy storage bed. We’re talking headboards with in-built shelves
and pull-out side drawers, plus deep underbed storage space too.
Keep favourite pieces on display on the top with the rest stashed

MAKE IT PRETTY
While splashing out on statement storage solutions can seem like
a big initial outlay, choosing stylish options that you can put on
display in your living room or bedroom will inspire you to make
use of them more effectively. You’re much more likely to tidy away
at the end of the day if your storage is easy to access, rather than
tucked away under the bed or at the back of a cupboard

WARM AND
WELCOMING
By knocking down a wall, adding a sociable central
island and accessorising with warm woods and
textured tiles, Isabel Metelsky has created a
kitchen that’s perfect for entertaining

About me
I’m Isabel Metelsky, a hairdresser. I live with my partner, Matt
Ginger, an ROV pilot, and our two cockapoos, Chilli and Chester.
Our home is a 1980s detached house in Corfe Mullen, Dorset, and

My room...
we moved here in July 2019. I share our renovation story on
Instagram @home_with_isabel.

MY PROBLEM KITCHEN
The cream and wood cabinets were cheap and poorly
installed, the breakfast bar had a massive fish tank fitted
into it and the vinyl flooring was ugly and sticky.
HOW I MADE IT WORK
We extended into the garden, which was large enough to
still leave a big outdoor space. We then redesigned the
kitchen layout to include an island with bar seating, and a
separate dining area with bi-fold doors onto the patio.
MY FAVOURITE PART
The hanging chair is a fun, unusual add to the room. I also
love the stylish larder cupboard. Matt designed and made
it, and it not only looks great, but it’s really useful too.

so we could fling them open and people could come in and out kitchenware so that it looks good when it’s on show’
of the garden. I love the different levels of the bench, table and
chairs and this set-up gives us lots of flexible seating’

MY EXPERIENCE
This is mine and Matt’s first home together. Although the walls were
yellow, and there were bright blue carpets everywhere, we knew
we’d get a lot more for our money if we bought a project. Matt had
done a renovation before, so although this place needed a lot of
work, we weren’t daunted.
The original kitchen was tiny and dominated by an L-shape
worktop that had a fish tank built into it. There was no space for a
dining table, so, as we love to entertain, extending the back wall
to create a large kitchen-diner was a no-brainer. We applied for
planning permission and got a builder in to create the shell, and
then we used Howdens online kitchen design service to create a
3D model of the room. This helped us visualise the space when
planning the layout of the Shaker-style cabinets we chose. The units
thankfully arrived just before lockdown, as Howdens then closed for
three months. Matt is really handy so he was able to fit the kitchen,
and his dad helped to put in the garden doors. A larder cupboard
was on my wish list but Howdens didn’t stock them, so Matt
designed and made the carcass and shelves, and then customised
some doors to create bi-folds for easy access. I was hoping to have
a wall of exposed brick, but by the time we came to that part of the
build, the budget was tight, so we went for tiles instead, but laid
them vertically for an uncluttered, modern look.
I love that we can now seamlessly move from kitchen to dining to
garden. Now that we can have friends round again, it’s the perfect
space for socialising.

About me

MY PROBLEM LIVING ROOM

The stairs were painted black, so the narrow hallway
was dark. The living room was covered in garish striped
metallic wallpaper and dominated by an ugly and
old-fashioned gas fireplace.
HOW I MADE IT WORK
We knocked down the separating wall, added some
DIY-hacked furniture, painted the room dark blue, and
added some colourful accessories.
MY FAVOURITE PART
The fireplace. It looks like a real log-burner but it was so
much cheaper, being electric, and we didn’t need to
worry about chimneys and flues.

MY EXPERIENCE
When we were looking to buy a place together, everyone said
finding your house is like falling in love; you’ll know when it
happens. Although this place smelled of cat wee and was a bit of a
wreck, we both knew it was ‘the one’!
As soon as we walked in, I had a vision of knocking down the
wall in the narrow hallway, through to the living room to create
one beautiful open space. Luckily, we had a month left in our rental,
so we got all the messy stuff done before we moved in. The wall
came down and the builders installed an I-beam. Then my dad
ripped out the ugly gas fire, which we replaced with an electric
log burner. Although I would love a real one at some stage, this is
pretty convincing. We lived with the room as it was for a year while
we did the rest of the house, which worked in our favour as it gave
us thinking time to work out what we needed in the space. We
designed a wall of storage, using IKEA units and shelves, and then
made a media unit out of Bestå cabinets.
I wanted a dark blue living room and I spent a long time choosing
the right shade before finally settling on Mythical Nights by Valspar.
I decided to paint everything the same colour, including all the
woodwork and shelving, to give the room a modern, bespoke feel.
And as I love displaying all my colourful trinkets, prints and candles,
I knew they would really come to life against the blue. I feel really
excited by colour and it’s a real mood changer for me; this room
feels so happy and welcoming now. It brings me so much joy.

Morag Waller transformed the family bathroom
in her Edinburgh home by mixing vintage pieces
with luxe touches for a stylish yet practical look

About me
I’m Morag Waller, a corporate lawyer. I live with my husband, John,
also a corporate lawyer, and children, Emily, five, and Charlie, three.

My room...
Our home is a 1930s bungalow in Blackhall, Edinburgh.

MY PROBLEM BATHROOM
It was a good size, but it was very 80s in style with a brownish-
cream coloured suite, a bidet and carpet.
HOW I MADE IT WORK
The existing bathroom fittings were
stripped out and the layout of pieces was
reconfigured to use the space better.
The room was retiled and redecorated, and
new fittings were installed, including a
free-standing bath.
MY FAVOURITE PART
The antique table that we use as a vanity
unit. It’s completely unique and, with the
marble basin on top, it adds a bespoke feel
to the space.

The bathroom is lit by the rooflight, but while it was tempting to
paint this north-facing space a light colour to maximise the
light, the dark grey walls create a moodier and cosier feel

BE INSPIRED
Morag says she gets lots of
inspiration from social media
and got the black taps after
spotting them on Pinterest.
‘We were wondering if we
should go for brass or black
taps, but we didn’t want too
much brass. We didn’t want it

I found these taps on eBay.
‘I saw the idea for the painted

was one of the first things we
decided on for the space.’
THINK OUTSIDE
THE BOX
Rather than choose a
vanity unit, the couple
customised an antique
table. ‘We wanted the
bathroom to feel like a nice
living space that had a
bath in it. There didn’t
seem to be any need to use
a standard bathroom
fitting, so we used a
wooden piece of furniture,’
says Morag. Their plumber
drilled a hole for the basin
and they added the towel
rail. ‘The marble basin from
Living Roc is the one thing
we splashed out on.’
GO DARK
The couple had planned to
paint the walls white, to
help maximise the light, but
once the room was tiled,
they started to have a
rethink. ‘A friend, who works
in interiors, called round
one day and suggested
using Down Pipe, the same
colour we used for the bath,
on the walls,’ Morag
explains. ‘As soon as she said
it, we were like, ‘Why didn’t
we think of that?’ Using a
darker colour in a north-
facing room creates a cosy
feel.’ The brass accessories,
including the mirror and
wall light adds warmth to
the monochrome palette.

MY EXPERIENCE
When we bought this bungalow in September 2012, it was obvious
we had a lot of work ahead of us. While the house didn’t need
structural work, the interior was dated. If anything, though, the tired
décor was a plus as knew we could make the house our own. The
family bathroom upstairs was always on our to-do list. To be honest,
it wasn’t a priority as we have our own en suite, so the only people
using this bathroom were the kids and guests. After a while, we
stopped seeing how bad it was.
When some friends said they were coming to stay for the first
time, we decided we had to finally tackle the bathroom. We always
had a good idea of how we wanted this space to look, but our ideas
have developed over the last few years.
The first consideration was the layout, as the existing arrangement
of the space didn’t work. There was a corner bath, which took up a
chunk of the room, and the bidet was redundant – it took up the
space where the sink and console are now, so that whole side of the
room was underused. We wanted the bathroom to tie in with the
other rooms, so that it flowed with the rest of the house. Our style is
more vintage and our wish-list items, including a free-standing bath,
subway tiles and brass fittings, fitted in with this theme.
We spotted these distressed-style subway tiles in Topps Tiles.
We liked the matt finish and that extra detail. They were a bit more
expensive, but worth it for the finished look. I was slightly worried
that the detail on the wall tiles and the busy mosaic floor tile might
be too much together, but once we looked at the samples at home,
we realised it worked.
We’re always adding in extra styling touches, and we sometimes
reuse pieces that we’ve had elsewhere in the house. Rather than
being a space to avoid, we now love spending time in here and it’s
such a nice place to bath the kids at night. Now, I feel like the house
is finally finished.

improvement dilemmas A Zac Hemming, Founding Director of
ICE Cleaning, advises…The primary
cause of mould is excess moisture from
damp, condensation or leaks. If left, this
moisture will form mould spots, which can
spread rapidly. Kitchens and bathrooms are
the two main areas where mould tends to
form. If there are high levels of humidity and damp in your
home, however, it can develop elsewhere too.
You could wipe the surface spores off yourself with
household chemicals, such as bleach, but this doesn’t
address the root cause of the spores. To ensure all sources
of mould are successfully removed, you should hire
a mould remediation specialist. Once the source has
been identified, the professionals will use non-abrasive
chemicals to remove both visual and airborne mould
spores and prevent them from developing further.

Season with salt and pepper, sprinkle
with chopped coriander and serve
