• The second edition of service-specific
exercise AVIA INDRA-2020 between
Indian Air Force and Russian Federation
Aerospace Force (RFSAF) was held at Air
Force Station Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
1.2 Vayu Shakti
• An air force exercise, which the IAF carries
out once every three years, to demonstrate
it is equipped, rehearsed and ready for
action.
• Exercise Vayu Shakti was mostly about
displaying the IAF’s ability to strike targets
on the ground such as enemy convoys and
tanks, radar stations, railway yards and
military headquarters.
• The Indian Air Force (IAF) would conduct
the Vayushakti-2022 military drill at
Pokhran field firing range in Rajasthan in
the month of March 2022.

Black 2020, the exercise is planned to return
to the Northern Territory in 2022.

Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) was held in
the Indian Ocean region from 23-24
November 2021.
• CORPAT is held twice a year to ensure
safety and security. It was conducted for
the first time in 2002.

• Partner countries: The USA,
Japan, Australia and INDIA.
• Quad nations began the second phase of
the Malabar naval exercise in the northern
Arabian Sea.
• Quad nations participated in the 25th
edition of the Malabar Exercise, which
began off the coast of Guam in the Pacific
Ocean.
• Malabar is a multilateral war-gaming
naval exercise that was started in 1992. It
began as a bilateral exercise between the
navies of India and the United States.
2.7 JIMEX 20
• It is a bilateral exercise which is conducted
biennially between the Indian Navy and
Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.
• India and Japan held the fifth edition of the
Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX) in
the Arabian Sea.
• The exercise, JIMEX-21, involved ships and
aircraft “engaging in a high tempo of
operations focused on air, surface &
subsurface dimensions of #MaritimeOps as
well as air domain’’.

• India and Singapore bilateral Naval
exercise.
• It was initiated in 1994, and is the Indian
Navy's longest uninterrupted bilateral
maritime exercise with any foreign navy.
• Recently conducted, 28th edition of
SIMBEX was a mega naval wargame in the
southern fringes of the South China Sea, in
reflection of their growing congruence of
interests in the strategically key region.
2.9 SITMEX-20
• It is a trilateral maritime exercise between
Indian Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy
and Royal Thai Navy.
• Indian Naval Ship (INS) Karmuk
participated in the 3rd edition from India.
o It is an indigenously built Missile
Corvette.
2.10 Ausindex
• It’s a joint naval exercise conducted
between India and the Australian Navy.
• Commenced in 2015 as a bilateral maritime
exercise, AUSINDEX has grown in
complexity over the years and the 3rd
edition of the exercise, held in 2019 in the
Bay of Bengal, included anti-submarine
drills for the first time.
• The 4th edition of AUSINDEX was held in
Australia’s Northern Territory between the
Royal Australian and the Indian navies.
2.11 PASSAGE EXERCISE (PASSEX)
• It is an exercise which is normally
undertaken whenever an opportunity
arises, in contrast to pre-planned maritime
drills.
• It is aimed at enhancing interoperability,
improving understanding and imbibing
best practices from each other.
• The Indian Navy and the Royal
Australian Navy conducted PASSEX in
Eastern Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
• Indian Naval ships conducted a Passage
Exercise (PASSEX) with the U.S. Navy’s
USS Nimitz carrier strike group near the
Andaman and Nicobar islands.
• Recently, India’s INS Kochi and Russian
ships engaged in the international Passage
Exercise (PASSEX).
2.12 Varuna
• It’s a joint naval exercise between India
and France.
• The 19th edition of the Indian and French
Navy bilateral exercise ‘VARUNA-2021’
was conducted in the Arabian Sea.
• This is the first time that the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) is participating in the
Varuna maritime exercise.
2.13 Indra Navy 2021
• Partner countries: India and Russia
• It refers to joint army exercises.
• Indian and Russian navies conclude the
12th edition of the biennial Exercise Indra
Navy in Baltic Sea.
• The primary aim of this year’s edition is to
further consolidate interoperability built
up by the two Navies over the years and
also to enhance understanding and
procedures for multi-faceted maritime
operations.
2.14 Naseem–Al–Bahar
• It is a biennial bilateral exercise between
the navies of India and Oman.
• Started in 1993, it literally means “sea
breeze”.
• India and Oman conducted the 12th edition
of bilateral maritime exercise ‘Naseem Al
Bahr-2020’ in Mormugao Port, Goa.
2.15 IMCOR
• Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol
(IMCOR), held annually since 2013.
• This was the 8th edition of coordinated
patrol (CORPAT) between India and
Myanmar.
2.16 Za’ir-Al-Bahr
• It is the bilateral maritime exercise
conducted between India and Qatar.
• The exercise helps to strengthen
cooperation and enhance interoperability
between the two navies.

terrorism, maritime piracy, and maritime
security.
• The second edition of the joint naval
exercise was conducted in the Persian
Gulf.
• This edition of the exercise included a
three-day harbour phase followed by a

exercises involving surface action, anti-
piracy exercises, air defence, maritime
surveillance, boarding operations and SAR
exercises.
2.17 ADMM Plus Exercises or
ASEAN Defence Ministers’
Meeting Plus
• ADMM-Plus is the only official
framework of Defense Minister's
meetings in the Asia-Pacific Region.
• It is a platform for ASEAN and its eight
Dialogue Partners to strengthen security
and defence cooperation for peace,
stability, and development in the region.
• Members:
o The ADMM-Plus comprises the ten
ASEAN countries as well as Australia,
China, Japan, India, the Republic of
Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the
United States.
• Recently, India’s defence minister attended
the 14th ASEAN Defence Ministers’
Meeting (ADMM) Plus organized online at
Hanoi, Vietnam.
2.18 Black Carillon 2018 exercise
• The Royal Australian Navy successfully
completed its annual submarine search and
rescue exercise off the coast of Western
Australia, along with international
participants from Indonesia, Malaysia,
and Vietnam.
• Navy’s submarine abandonment, escape
and rescue system has been certified for
another year as part of Exercise Black
Carillon 21.
2.19 KAKADU 2018
• Exercise KAKADU, which started in 1993,
is a multilateral regional maritime
engagement exercise hosted by the Royal
Australian Navy (RAN) and supported by
the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
• The exercise is held biennially in Darwin
and the Northern Australian Exercise
Areas (NAXA). It derives its name from
Kakadu National Park
• It is aimed at enhancing interoperability
and development of common
understanding of procedures for maritime
operations
• INS Sahyadri won the KAKADU 18 Cup,
a multi activity competition which
included running, swimming, crossing
land and water obstacles and kayaking
through a spirited performance, which saw
participation of 23 teams from as many
countries.
2.20 Exercise KOMODO
• It is a multilateral Humanitarian Assistance
and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise, and
was conducted for the first time by the
Indonesian Navy.
• Member State: India, China, Australia,
New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and
USA .
• Place: Batam, Indonesia.
• Indian Navy participated in the exercise
with INS Sukanya.
• The exercise included Land and Ship
Medical Evacuation Exercise (MEDEVAC)
and Engineering Civic Action Programme
(ENCAP) during the Civic Mission Phase
and 22 navies participated in the exercise.
2.21 EOD J2A
• Member State:
o Indian Navy, Japan Maritime Self-
Defence Force (JMSDF) and the U.S.
Navy are participating Mine Warfare
Exercise (MWE)
• Place: Mutsu Bay Coast of northern Japan.
• Indian Navy divers are part of an Explosive
Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team there.

2.22 Maritime Information Sharing
Exercise (MARISX)
• Member State:
o 33 countries including India, Australia,
UK and USA.
• The exercise helps to enhance mutual
understanding, and strengthen the
processes and linkages amongst the
international maritime community, thus
allowing seemingly unrelated information
to be shared and amalgamated to make
sense of critical maritime security issues.
2.23 CUTLASS EXPRESS-2021
• It is sponsored by U.S. Africa Command
(AFRICOM) and is conducted by U.S.
Naval Forces Africa.
• It is an exercise designed to assess and
improve combined maritime law
enforcement capacity, promote national
and regional security in East Africa as well
as information sharing, planning and
operating.
• The 2021 edition of the exercise involves 12
East African countries, the US, the UK,
India and various international
organisations such as the International
Maritime Organisation (IMO), United
Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
(UNODC), Interpol, European Union
Naval Force Somalia (EU NAVFOR),
Critical Maritime Routes Indian Ocean
(CRIMARIO) and EUCAP Somalia.
• The Indian Navy participated in the
exercise in the 'trainer's role'.
2.24 SALVEX
• The maiden Indian Navy-US Navy
SALVEX was conducted in 2005 and the
SALVEX series of exercises have been
conducted annually thereafter alternately
in India and US Pacific locations.
• The aim of the exercise is to strengthen
capability in niche techniques associated
with diving and salvage.
2.25 SEACAT-2021

• It is one of a series of multilateral exercises

that the United States carries out with
Asian countries, including those from
Southeast Asia.
• Place: Malacca Straits and the South China
Sea
• The Indian Navy participated in the U.S.
Navy-led Southeast Asia Cooperation and
Training (SEACAT)-21 military exercise
in Singapore, to demonstrate its maritime
maneuvers.

2.26 MILAN-2022

• It is a biennial, multilateral naval exercise

which started in 1995.
• The Navy has held 10 editions of the Milan
exercise, with the theme of “synergy across
the seas” to enhance professional
interactions between friendly foreign
navies and learn best practices from each
other, since 1995.
• It is held under the aegis of Eastern Naval
Command.
• The latest edition of Indian Navy’s
multilateral exercise MILAN 2022 was held
in the ‘City of Destiny’, Visakhapatnam.
• The aim of the exercise is to hone
operational skills, imbibe best practices
and procedures, and enable doctrinal
learning in the maritime domain, through
professional interaction between friendly
navies.

• During the exercise, the soldiers of both
countries also destroyed the hideouts of the

BABINA Field Firing Range (BFFR) in
Central India between the Singapore Army
and the Indian Army (IA).
• The joint exercise is aimed at developing

against terrorism.

• India-Africa joint field training exercise
AFINDEX-19 aimed to train the
participating contingents in Humanitarian
Mine Assistance (HMA) and Peacekeeping
Operations (PKO) under the United
Nations Charter through practical and
comprehensive discussions and tactical
exercises.
• Member State
o Contingents from Egypt, Ghana,
Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, South Africa,
Tanzania, Namibia, Mozambique,
Uganda, Niger and Zambia are part of
the joint exercise together with officers
from Rwanda, Democratic Republic of
Congo and Madagascar as Observers.
• Place:
o The joint exercises were held at Pune’s
Foreign Training Node at Aundh
Military Station and College of Military
Engineering in Kirkee.
4.25 MEDEX 2019
• It is a military medical exercise of 18
ASEAN Plus countries.
• The exercise was co-chaired by India and
Myanmar.
• During the medical exercise MEDEX 2019
armies of the participating countries
worked on Mass casualty management,
Chemical spill situation, Aeromedical
exercise and Evacuation healthcare
management.
4.26 SCO - PEACE MISSION-2021 4.29 KHAAN QUEST

• As part of Shanghai Cooperation • It is a multinational exercise co-sponsored

Organization (SCO) initiatives, SCO Peace
Mission Exercise is conducted biennially
for SCO member states.
• Military contingents of the all eight SCO
member nations (China, Russia,
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan,
Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan).
• The 6th of 2021 was hosted by Russia in the
Orenburg Region of South West Russia.
• The aim is to foster close relations between
SCO Member States and to enhance the
abilities of the military leaders to command
multinational military contingents.
4.27 Exercise TSENTR 2019
• Member States:
o Russia, China, Tajikistan, India,
Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and
Uzbekistan.
• Aimed at evolving drills of participating
armies in fight against international
terrorism and ensuring military security in
strategic central Asian region.
• It was conducted by the Central Military
Commission of Russia at Donguz training
ranges.
• It comprised two modules:
1. Module I: counter-terror operations,
repelling air strikes, reconnaissance
operations and defensive measures.
2. Module II: offensive operations.
by U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and hosted
annually by the Mongolian Armed Forces.
• Member State: 38 countries such as
Mongolia, China.
• Place: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital city,
as well as MAF's Five Hills Training Area.
4.30 COBRA GOLD-2022
• Member State:
o Cobra Gold is the largest Asia-Pacific
military exercise held annually
between Thailand, the USA, and 27
nations.
o India has the status of observer plus
country because of its increasing
regional operability.
• Place: It takes place in Thailand every year.
• Cobra Gold 2022 is in the news because it
has been scaled down for a second year
running and military-ruled Myanmar has
been left out.

4.28 CORMORANT STRIKE X - 2019

• Member States: Malaysia, Maldives,

Nepal, Russia, Bangladesh, China, India,
Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria and Zambia.
• It is an annual Field Training Exercise
(FTX) designed to have an opportunity for
the Commandos and Special Forces to
exercise troops in a special operations
environment.
• It was conducted by the Sri Lankan Army
at Kuchchaveli, Sri Lanka.
