INTRODUCTION
The Social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships
and empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Social Work is a profession that
fulfils the social welfare mandate to promote well-being and quality of life.
The goal of social work is to help individuals to fit better into their environment and change
the environment so that it works better for them
The scope of social work are child development or child welfare, medical social work, clinical
social work, administrative and management, international social work, social work in acute
psychiatric hospital and social work as community organizer.
Principles relative to respect for human rights, principles relative to social justice and
principles relative to professional integrity are principles of social work.
Compassion, service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human
relationships, integrity, and competence are the core values of social work.
Some of the many professional roles in social work are enabler, broker, advocate, case
manager, educator, facilitator, organizer, and manager.

What’s New?
Functions of social work. Main activities professionally performed by social workers (DuBois
and Miley 2008). Counsel with individuals, facilitate groups, work with families, refine agency
procedures, initiate new programs, lobby for legislative changes, organize community action,
educate the public, conduct needs assessments, evaluate practice and programs at various system
levels and targets of change or social transformation.
Family and child welfare, health, mental health, corrections, and schools are areas of
specialization of social work. Career opportunities of social work are administrators, supervisors,
planners, researchers, and teachers. They found working at home health, aging services, mental
health, criminal justice, rehabilitation, school linked services and many others.
By International Federation of Social workers (IFSW) and International Association of School
of Social Work (IASSW). Rights of social workers are partially outlined rights to fulfill its professional
mandates and to live by its values. Responsibilities of social workers within their field of
specialization, to help children, to assist those life-threatening problems, to aid people in overcoming
addictions, to protect and uphold respect for the inherent worth and dignity of all people as express
in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and other related UN
declarations on rights and the conventions derived from those declarations, to promote social
justice, relation to society generally, and in relation to the people with whom they work, to apply the
professional values and principles set out above to their practice and to act with integrity and treat
people with compassion, empathy and care.
Social work is accountable to the clients, the public, and the society. Accountable the clients,
colleagues, employers, professional associations, and to the law. Accountable for their actions to the
values and principles of the profession, and answerable to their clients professional bodies like
Registered Social Workers (RSW), Certified Social Workers (LSW), Licensed Clinical Social
Workers (LCSW), and Licensed Independent Social Workers (LISW) organization and the laws
promulgated and enforced by appropriate government agencies.
Social Workers’ Code of Ethics. Ethical responsibilities to clients, to colleagues, in practice
settings, as professionals, to the social work profession and to the broader society.
