THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY - DUBOIS COLLEGE

MET 206
DYNAMICS
Examination 1

October 16, 2015

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. This exam is closed-notes, closed-book.

2. Keep your eyes on your own paper. Any attempt to consult your neighbor’s paper will result in immediate
ejection from the exam and a score of zero.
3. Read each question carefully and make sure you answer all parts if it is a multipart question.
4. Keep your answers brief and to the point. If you can answer a question properly with one or two sentences,
writing a paragraph will not net you any extra points.
5. Although you will be evaluated on the technical correctness of sketched diagrams more than the quality of the
drawings, you should do your best work given the time constraints. Your answer is a graphical communication
to me and if I can’t read it or portions of it, you will not receive credit for it.
6. When you have completed the quiz, please be certain your name is on all pages and turn the exam in.

(25 pts) 1. Pulley A accelerates from rest to 25 rpm clockwise in 3 seconds. Determine the displacement and velocity of block D at t =
3 seconds. Pulley A has a diameter of 6 inches, Pulley B has a diameter of 3 inches, and Pulley C has a radius of 2 inches.

3. At t = 0, a car with an initial velocity of 80 ft/s begins to coast to a stop as it proceeds up a hill. It comes to a stop in a
distance of 500 ft and then starts to accelerate down the slope. Determine the displacement of the car at t = 16 s. The
magnitude of deceleration up the hill is the same as the magnitude of the acceleration down the hill.

4. A golfer hits a golf ball from the fairway so that the ball takes off at 125 ft/s at an angle of 30 o with the horizontal. Calculate
the maximum height reached by the ball. How far away will the ball first hit the ground from the point it is struck? State
any assumptions that are made to solve the problem.

Assumptions: constant acceleration due to gravity in y-direction

No wind resistance, so no acceleration in x-direction

Launch and landing points are at same elevation

Rise and Fall times are equal

Vx = 108.25

Vy = 62.5

0 = 62.5 - 32.2t

t = 1.94

2t = 3.88

Xmax = 0 + 108.25(3.88) = 420

Ymax = 0+ 62.5(1.94) – 0.5(32.2)(1.94)2 = 60.66

5. Consider the “salt-and-pepper” ride at Knoebel’s Amusement park shown below. Determine the normal and tangential
(25 pts)
accelerations due to the rotation at the instant shown assuming that the ride has been operating for 10 seconds and that
the acceleration for the ride is from rest to 3 rad/s in 10 seconds.
