    Metacognitive Reading Report 1

    Name: Maria Jeaness B. Evarle


    Section: A59

    Instructions: Read the referenced readings and accomplish the reading report:

    Readings:

    • Gottschalk, L. (1969). Understanding history: A primer of historical method


    (pp. 41-61, 117-170). New York, NY: A.A. Knopf.
    • Howell, M. & Prevenier, W. (2001). From reliable sources: An introduction to
    historical methods (pp. 17-68). Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press.

    1. The three (3) things that I significantly learned from the readings are…
    First (1), I learned that historians aim to recreate, not to create. It amazed
    me how thorough they actually are in researching and gathering sources
    to tell the stories from the past, which they are not allowed to imagine that
    could not have happened. (2) Next learning is that primary sources don’t
    need to be the original. They could be, but only in the sense of underived
    or first-hand as to their testimony. Lastly (3), in terms of evidence in testing
    credibility of sources, is putting the hypothesis in interrogative form is more
    judicious than declarative form before it was examined.

    2. The three (3) things that are still unclear to me are…


    The (1) part where the difference between human document and personal
    document were explained, I didn’t quite get the gist of it. (2) Next, is the
    one of the most basic rules in analyzing testimony in the concept of
    interested witness. Lastly (3), is the verse written by Vincent Starrett entitled
    “After Much Striving for Fame”, I had quite a hard time understanding the
    context.
    3. I used to think that…
    History was just there. I didn’t mind much on how we got the information
    from the past, I just took the learnings from the books and just move forward
    by using it to do better in the present and future. But as I read the
    documents, I realized how hard and thorough it is to gather sources from
    the past to prove what happened. I also thought that historians are people
    who loves history, and now I know that they’re the experts who search for
    the important events in the past and prove it, and share it to people, which
    will affect their decisions in life.

    4. The three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings are…
    First (1), given all the information from the past, is it still possible that the
    history could repeat itself subconsciously? Next (2), how is historical method
    done now in modern time? Lastly (3), is secondary source still be considered
    as an original?
