DO Mikhail Varshavski

certified family medicine physician, television personality, educator, writer, and
philanthropist with over 9 million social media followers. Doctor Mike immigrated from
Russia to New York at the age of six and went on to get a B.S. in medicine from the New
York Institute of Technology. By the age of 24, he had earned a Bachelor of Science in
Life Sciences and a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine with honors.
Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, works at Chatham Family Medicine as a primary care physician.
He believes in preventative medicine and teaching people about how minor lifestyle
changes may have a large influence on both quality of life and health outcomes. Mike's
influence as a physician has extended well beyond the confines of his clinic. Dr. Mike
encourages, inspires, and advises millions of followers and admirers through his fast-
rising social media presence. His social media posts, YouTube channel, in-person
interactions, speaking engagements, and appearances on network news shows such as
ABC's Good Morning America and Nightline all prescribe a good dosage of honest
medical counsel. His work promotes awareness about a variety of health conditions. It
provides advice on how to lower cancer risks, improve diet, embrace exercise, implement
new stress-reduction techniques, and, in general, learn how to live a healthier life. Dr.
Mike earned his medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine after
graduating magna cum laude from the New York Institute of Technology. He completed
his internship and residency at Overlook Medical Center via Thomas Jefferson
University's Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia. He is a member of several
professional organizations and is involved in health-related volunteerism and charitable
care. Dr. Mike spends his free time with his devoted husky, Roxy, when he is not giving
medical advice.
Following his talk, Doctor Mike discussed osteopathic medicine.
What drew you to a profession in osteopathic medicine?
Most children do not witness their family members becoming physicians, but because I
immigrated to America when I was six, I witnessed my father train as a D.O. in NYIT-
COM And, at the age of nine, I observed his journey through medical school, residency,
and his practice of OMM on me. I was an athlete; thus, I was often injured. And he'd cure
them, and they'd leave. It blew my mind how a hands-on approach can be a very
meaningful way to connect with someone. You may genuinely heal their ailments without
the use of drugs. That's even better. Because of the opioid crisis, it is more necessary
than ever. I have an alternate treatment approach in my toolset that other doctors who
have not had OMM [osteopathic manipulative medicine] training do not have. So, when I
initially fell in love with OMM, it was because it worked on me, and I declared that I wanted
to master it. And now I'm in love with it because it provides my patients with a proven
strategy that works and is so low risk that it's simply great to be able to do so.
What inspired you to pursue a career as a family physician?
Again, my father has a significant effect here. He was a family medicine doctor in Russia,
and when he arrived to the United States, he pursued the same route. I noticed the
connection he developed with his patients while watching him go through his training.
They grew close. They were accepted into the family. Even though they were his patients,
it was almost as if he was having friends come in and ask for advice. When you have that
type of relationship, you can effect substantial change. Going to visit a doctor in an urgent
care or emergency department environment is wonderful for urgent concerns, rapid
repairs, and the like that sort of thing However, if you actually want to transform
someone's life, enhance their quality of life, or lengthen their life, the only way to do it is
through a connection. And the field where I observed that was family medicine. You can
deliver a baby, care for the newborn, and look after the baby's parents. I had had an
incredible circumstance when a couple came in to see me. They were having some sexual
problems. I assisted them in getting through it, and they were able to have a child as a
result. They conceived the kid, and I delivered it. That youngster is now my patient. The
grandparents have subsequently emigrated from South America, and they are now also
my patients. As a result, it genuinely helps me to appreciate the breadth of family
medicine. That's what I enjoy.
