A word to the teacher……
This collection of activities has been prepared with the intention of providing
an additional support to the teachers to complete the competency levels, to be
covered during the second term. Except competency levels related to listening
and speaking, all the other competency levels have been included in this
material.
Teachers can use this material to align the textbook and the teacher guide
properly when doing lessons using online platforms.
Moreover, the activities included, have been designed encouraging self -
learning mode. Therefore, students can complete these activities and receive the
post feedback by the teacher. The efforts taken by teachers to provide
maximum learning opportunities to the children amidst all the difficulties
during Covid-19 Pandemic is highly commendable. Finally, it is recommended
to use this material by adapting activities according to the standards of the
students.

Lesson Eight
6.1 Construct simple sentences
Simple present tense, positive ,positive question ,negative, negative questions.
We use simple present tense to express the everyday actions.Look at the underlined words in
following story. They all are verbs used in simple present tense.

Harry is a cowboy. He lives in a farm. He has a horse named


Rinu. Harry loves Rinu .He rides Rinu everyday.Sometimes
they walk slowly and sometimes they run fast. They always
have a good time.

In simple present tense we use the base form of a verb .

Positive Positive question

I eat rice. Do I eat rice?

Negative Negative question

I do not eat rice. Don’t I eat rice?

But it is not the same with all pronouns.

Lesson Nine
.Competency Level: 6.1 Construct simple sentences (simple past tense- positive, positive
questions, negative ,negative questions.)
Introduction: Simple past tense
You learned simple past tense in grade five. Let’s learn more about it.
❖ We use simple past tense to talk about actions completed in the past.
Let’s read the examples.
1. She went to Colombo yesterday.
2. My father made a Wesak lantern.
In these two sentences the verbs “went” and “made “are past tense verbs of “go” and “make”. To
make sentences in past tense we must learn the past tense of verbs (infinitives)
❖ There are two types of past tense verbs.

1 .Regular verbs.
Most of the verbs are regular verbs. We make past tense of these verbs by adding d, ed or
ied.
Study the examples and rules given below.

What is a conjunction?
A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect words, phrases, clauses, or sentences.

“AND” is used to join two or more words or sentences.
