Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Environmental activism is concerned with making a difference through

promoting improved environmental practices, creating awareness, and

advocating for the protection of the natural environment from destruction or

pollution. Earth Hour is one example of advocacy that promotes a global

grassroots movement uniting people to take action on environmental issues and

protect the planet that is organized by WWF. The World Wildlife Fund Inc. (WWF)

is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1961 that works in

the field of wilderness preservation and the reduction of human impact on the

environment. The World Wildlife Fund Inc. (WWF) is an international non-

governmental organization was established in 1961 by a group of passionate and

committed individuals who sought to secure the funding necessary to protect

places and species that were threatened by human development

Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future who focus on helping

the environment and youth. It is the project under of Social Development

Department in Asian Social Institute, Inc. The Children and Youth in Action for

Sustainable Future Organization is Lacking when it comes to promoting their

Advocacies, Environmental Events and Projects and Faster Transaction.

The project team will create a website for Children and Youth in Action for

Sustainable Future to help them promote their advocacy and various programs
2

and activities related to environmental conservation. Children and Youth for a

Sustainable Future has a Facebook page, but the project team wants to create a

website that will help them increase their promotional efforts.

Website for Children and youth in Action for Sustainable future deserves

more because the group needs funds to help the environment and support its

programs and activities. The Project team decided to create a website to

establish the organization and it is useful to both admin and site visitor to

communicate, check and view the events and project of the organization.

Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future in Binangonan Rizal

is a youth and environmental project of Social Development Department in Social

Institute, Inc. located at Asi-cyasf etc. San Juan, Barangay Darangan

Binangonan Rizal started in the year 2007.

3

Objectives of the Project

The general objective of this project is to design and manage a website for

Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future.

Specifically, the project team aims to:

1. To determine the result of the quality assurance testing with a target of

90% as its passing rate.

2. To determine the result of user experience evaluation based on the

following criteria; Usability, Learnability, User-Interface, Function and

Navigation with a final score 4.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The project team design and developed a Website for Children and Youth

in Action for Sustainable Future in Binangonan Rizal during the academic year of

2021-2022.

The website was developed using WordPress and MySQL for database. It

has two users, which are the Admin and Site Visitor. For the admin, the Children

and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future administration would be the admin.

Also, they can see all the people who want to be a volunteer in their group and

edit events for the website. For the Site Visitor, the Site Visitor can browse all the

important details of the Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future and

they can participate on the events of the organization. The Site Visitor can

choose to become either volunteer or a donor.

4

Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future is a project of the

Social Development Department that helps the youth and also the nature; as a

student also part of the youth, the project team want to make a website that

shows how Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future help other youth

and also, they can help the environment.

The Volunteer or User cannot use any voice message nor video call. In

short, the website cannot provide a real-time conversation. The user cannot buy

the product that they offer but using the chat support; they can inquire on the

website on how to buy their product and how to donate. Also, the user cannot

pay and donate on the website straightly; they can see only the bank account

info and the process on how to send money or donation.

The project team used the web development life cycle as its development

framework, which would allow to solve the existing problem and provide the

features they need. There were twenty (20) total respondents, which consisted of

four (4) potential donors, four (4) visitors, three (3) IT practitioner, one (1) admin,

and eight (8) volunteers that were chosen.

Significance of the Study

The project team anticipated that the study's findings would be extremely

valuable to the following entities and individuals:

5

Organization. The website would help the project promote their products

offer and communicate easily to the donor, user, and volunteer.

Volunteer. It would benefit the volunteer and the scholars because all the

donations and revenue will go to the Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable

Future.

Visitor. The website would help the visitor so they can see information

about how can save the environment and some educational ideas.

Project team. This study will benefit us in many things like this project will

teach us many knowledge and idea on how can help the environment in small

things, and this study would help us how to be system analysts, a project leader,

documentarist, programmers, and QA Staff Tester that can use in the future.

Future Project Team. This study will help the future project team in the

decision-making of their future website and give them knowledge in their study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

Website

In our present generation, having a website is important for this time most

of the people use internet to look their needs and buy product, also to

communicate with each other.

As said by (Dingli, 2014) websites have become a fundamental part of the

current marketing company program as a result of the tremendous

advancements of the Internet over the last few years. However, merely having a

website isn't enough for a company to succeed online. Indeed, a website's

usability impacts whether a visitor remains or leaves for a competitor. As a result,

it's critical to comprehend the significance of online usability and, as a result, the

requirement for review.

From this perspective, automation of the latter is immensely advantageous

since it not only aids designers in producing more usable websites, but it also

improves Internet users' overall experience and happiness. As a solution to this

challenge, an Intelligent Usability Evaluation (IUE) tool is suggested, which

automates the usability evaluation process by applying a Heuristic Evaluation

approach in an intelligent manner using numerous research-based AI

methodologies. The tool and human annotators have a strong connection when it

comes to finding usability breaches, according to the results of the experiments.

8

As stated by (Al-Hawari,2020) The fact that a university website is mostly

built and administered in-house necessitates resolving a number of issues in

order to improve product quality, organizational efficiency, and customer

happiness. As a result, this article proposes a holistic approach to website

administration that takes into account three major aspects of software

management: people, technology, and processes. To efficiently manage

websites, a multidisciplinary team structure is advocated, with clearly defined

leadership, roles, talents, and duties.

The world is digital, and information is delivered via websites. Everyone

now rely more on the Internet and digital information, and digital platforms and

channels are the finest means to interact and promote. In many circumstances,

up to 90% of purchasing decisions are based on search and website, and each

day, an increasing number of mobile users and local customers make purchasing

decisions based on websites.

As mentioned by (Undu & Akuma, 2018) the website symbolizes an

organization, interacting or projecting an organization’s principles, culture,

values, vision, and perspectives. It is an interface connecting organizations and

their clients.

According to (Stein, 2011) the potential of the World Wide Web to

increase the communication capacity of social movement groups has sparked

significant conjecture and a growing body of studies. Websites may be useful in

9

this sense as a medium for online publishing and certain features and

capabilities.

As stated by Aida Nasirah Abdullah, Kalthom Husain, Mohaida Mohin

(2010) Online campaigns reflect all the advantages; namely speed, low cost,

accessibility, customization, interactivity, and persuasive ability over other media

channels. Normally via websites, expensive campaigns could be done not only

faster and cheaper, but also successfully (Ward, 2012). Web interactivity seems

to be highly beneficial to ENGOs in advocating environmental campaigns and

trigger interaction (Petersson, 2010; Ward, 2012).

As stated by Upi Fitriani, Adisyahputra Adisyahputra, Ratna Komala

(2018) analysis and discussion result has proved that the eligibility of eco-friendly

website based on the evaluation of the content expert, media expert and peer

reviewer is excellent; based on the student’s evaluation, good.

The project team wishes to develop a website to help the Children and

Youth in Action for Sustainable Future.

Use of Website to promote the Environment

According to (Eimhjellen, 2014) Technology is embedded in and employed

within specific social settings, shaping and being shaped by social and
10

organizational systems. New communication technology can support current

modes of behavior in established and institutionalized organizations, while

elements of new web technology may have significant consequences for the

creation and molding of less institutionalized groupings.

As stated by (Morgan & Barlow, 2019) Resources of nature Extension

educators use outdoor environmental education sites to raise public awareness

about environmental issues but finding suitable locations can take effort.

Extension professionals can use geographic information system (GIS) software

and geospatial data to better efficiently choose such places. It describes how to

used GIS technology to choose a natural resources field day location in

Alabama's Tuskegee National Forest. It examined site factors including forest

type, road access, and slope to filter down candidate locations from 94 to the top

two. Free and low-cost geospatial data sources are also explored.

This project helps more the environment to survive because of the

pollution that people do. It will also help the project to be public to gain more

volunteers and this literature and idea explain how the environment influences

the lives of everyone in the world.

Promotion to website

As stated in Section 12. Article XIV of the Constitution of the Republic of

the Philippines:

“The State shall regulate the transfer and promote the adaptation of technology from all
sources for the national benefit. It shall encourage the widest participation of private
groups, local governments, and community-based organizations in the generation and
11

utilization of science and technology.” The article above encourages the adaptation of
technology from all sources for the benefit of the people in the country. As the science
and technology continuously progress, almost all institutions in the country are using
technology in their daily transactions.

Email Message

According to (Khan,2015) with the advent of information and

communication technologies, e-mail is one of the prime tools for communication.

Almost everyone uses emails for business communications as well as for sharing

personal information. E-mail is vulnerable against cybercrimes.

As stated by (Nong & Gainsbury 2019) The nature of the online

environment makes it difficult for individuals to verify their safety and to identify

latent risks in online activities. This limits website users' ability to take appropriate

security precautions. Websites use various features and functions supported by

computer-based media technologies to communicate and interact with users to

achieve business success.

Non-Government Environmental Organization

According to Tom Denison &Kirsty Williamson (2012), a paucity of

research examines the factors which are most important in helping community-

based, non-profit organizations to design websites that achieve their aims. This

article attempts to fill this research gap by exploring website management issues

within 17 organizations in two locations: Victoria, Australia and Tuscany, Italy.

Integral to the research was an examination of structural barriers and inter-

organizational relationships that act to facilitate the take-up, or otherwise, of

12

technology. Theory regarding the diffusion of innovations and social network

analysis provided the background.

As stated by Molefi Motsoenyane (2012) to the profit & non-profit

organizational long-term success of promotional campaigns and marketing

communication are affected by the effective use if information technology (IT).

Web presence allows organizations to put all sorts of media, visual, text, sound,

video and animation to promote their services.

Testing and evaluation

As mentioned by (Helm, 2014) Quality Assurance Testing Web-Based

testing is a repetitive process of identifying defects, where a defect is any

variance between actual and expected results.

According to (Sauro & Lewis, 2016) User experience evaluation

questionnaire Standardized usability questionnaires are questionnaires designed

for the assessment of perceived usability, typically with a specific set of questions

presented in a specified order using a specified format with specific rules for

producing scores based on the answers of respondents.

With this literature & idea, the project team wishes to design and to

develop the Website for Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future in

Binangonan Rizal. The project team wants to make a website to encourage some
13

youth to participate to this program and also to showcase the activity that they do

for the environment.

Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

Project Development Framework

The project team employs web development life cycle in the conduct of

this project

The web development life cycle was chosen by the project team since it is

best suited for our website. Web development life cycle is a helpful tool for

website development because it boosts flexibility, team cooperation, and

efficiency, all of which benefit both the development team and the client. It is put

to the test in a dynamic environment and responds to the changes that occur

inside the organization.

The web development life cycle refers to all of the steps involved in

creating a website, from conceptualization to coding and design to deployment

and maintenance. It is the normal or methodical procedure to follow in order to

create a functional website.

Information gathering the project team seek information and ask questions

about the organization. The project team would conduct an interview with The

Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future to collect all the data and

information that will be use for the website.

In planning phase, the project team considered some tools to use in

creating website for the organization. The project team would identify what is the
15

problem and what is the potential of the developing website. The project team will

construct ideas to encourage more site visitor to become a volunteer.

In designing phase, the project team design a website that has a user-

friendly interface to make them comfortable while using it. In order to accomplish

ease of use on the website, the project team would create the architecture and

components design of the website, which also needs to be informative and have

a user-friendly interface and a good user experience.

In content organizing phase the project team used all the gathered

information in organizing and arranging the interface of the website and to share

knowledge and information to make the website more attractive.

In configuration and management originally the coding phase, the project

team competes the entire website through configuration and management.

In testing phase, the project team run the website for testing to check if

the code and programming works according to user requirements. The project

team would test the website for problems and conduct quality assurance testing

to ensure that it met the client's expectations.

Maintenance phase happens after the project team deploys the software

and its fully operational on user’s environment. This phase of the cycle ensures

that the system remains running at peak performance level.

Locale of the Study

The study conducted in Binangonan Rizal. The Children and Youth in

Action for Sustainable Future started since 2007. As cited on the records of

Huerta Cavada, Binangonan, originally a visita of Morong, was separated and

became independent parish in 1621. Another version stated, however, that

17

Binangonan was separated from Morong in 1737. In 1766, the Superior Gobierno

licensed Angono as an independent parish separating it from

Binangonan. Angono’s ecclesiastical activities were placed under the care of the

secular clergy.

For a number of years now, several Children and Youth in Action for

Sustainable Future Programs have been implemented in different communities

inspiring various sectors of society including organizations and institutions to

partner with ASI to know more about the programs and learn from it.

Implemented in different areas within the three municipalities of Angono,

Binangonan and Cardona, neighboring municipalities, parishes and dioceses in

Metro Manila.

Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future projects are geared

towards consciousness raising regarding environmental concerns and what can

be done about it. Students from different schools within the locality and including

those from Metro Manila visit places where Children and Youth in Action for

Sustainable Future projects and activities are implemented.  This is a proof that

Children and Youth in Action for Sustainable Future is gaining grounds on its

work and advocacies.  At the same time, it attracts people not only from the

locality but from foreign countries as well, notably those coming from Asian

countries who, ASI considers, learning partners.

18

As of February 2022, the children and youth in action for sustainable

future organization is doing some events in online activities campaign and holistic

environmental education.
