SF6 Toxic By-products

• Reactive decomposition by-products form when SF6 is

exposed to:
• spark discharges
• partial discharges
• switching arcs
• failure arcing

• Decomposition by-products can take the form of gas or

powders
• Other types of contaminants can include moisture and air
(from handling or leakage), dust and particles (mechanical
generation)
• If by-products are ingested or inhaled cause: eye, nose and
throat irritation, pulmonary oedema, and other lung
damage, skin and eye burns, nasal congestion, Bronchitis,
rashes

aSF4 is readily hydrolysed to SOF2.
Powder By-products
Tungsten, aluminum, copper fluorides WF6, WO3, AlF3, CuF2
S2 F10 is ordourless in pure form but its toxicity is on par with phosgene, the infamous chemical
