solution that is scalable to meet your needs and all of the capabilities and product coverage found in Insight
Remote Support Standard. See "Updating existing Insight RS installations" on page 96 for more details.

configured to monitor your environment
l Quicker and easier to install than any of the previous versions of Insight Remote Support

recommend a configuration change to avoid potential downtime. HPE processes personal data according
to the HPE Global Master Privacy Policy and HPE Privacy Statement

Overview

Product architecture
Insight Remote Support leverages a distributed architecture that is divided into two types of systems: Hosting
Device and Monitored Device.
l Hosting Device: This is a Windows ProLiant server or Windows virtual guest on a VMware, Citrix or
Hyper-V virtual machine that hosts the Insight Remote Support application and initiates all central remote
support operations. This includes the collection of events and configuration information from the monitored
devices, and transmission of this information securely to HPE for fast and effective problem resolution.
l Monitored Device: These are the supported hardware devices that are monitored for hardware events and
from which configuration information is collected. The events and collections are gathered by the Insight
Remote Support application on the Hosting Device and then securely transferred to HPE. Response from
HPE or your preferred HPE Authorized Channel Partner will be delivered in line with the warranty or
contractual support agreement purchased for the device reporting a failure.

What is a service event

Insight RS monitors a customer’s hardware environment for service events that require action from the
Service Provider (HPE Channel Partner and/or HPE services team) or customer. For the most part,
actionable service events require replacing a failed Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) or Customer Replaceable
Unit (CRU) in the monitored hardware. Non-actionable events are filtered out, and actionable service events
are forwarded to HPE. Insight RS monitors hardware for hard failures from a major component on the
hardware such as CPU, disk, memory, and power supply, and these will trigger a service event
communication to HPE. In addition, Insight RS monitors hardware for soft errors, and in some instances,
when the number of soft errors exceeds a specific threshold, an event is sent to HPE. Local only events such
as power failures, which are non-actionable by HPE, may also appear in the Insight RS Console so that
customers can resolve the issue. Further details regarding what classifies as an actionable service event is
HPE confidential information.

What access level is required

You must have administrative rights to Microsoft Windows on the Hosting Device to install and configure
Insight RS. For more information, see "Access requirements" on page 28.
After installation you can configure Insight RS to use Active Directory for access if desired. For more
information, see the HPE Insight Remote Support Installation and Configuration Guide.

Important: The rsadmin command is a powerful tool that can be used to manage the Insight RS
application. The rsadmin command is executable by any local users on the Hosting Device. HPE
recommends that you restrict access to the Hosting Device to only authorized users to prevent
unwanted changes to the Insight RS configuration on the Hosting Device.

Important: Insight RS requires administrator access to the monitored devices. Discovery and
collections require privileged access in order to retrieve information about the monitored devices.

Overview

Product support
It is always advisable that you read the Insight Remote Support Installation and Configuration Guide before
installation. This document is designed to help and guide you through a successful installation and
configuration. However, if you need further support for Insight Remote Support then this is available through
your local HPE Response Center. Please refer to www.hpe.com/services/getconnected, where you will find a
wealth of information on Insight Remote Support. This includes access to FAQ's, peer to peer forums, and the
contact details of HPE Support.
Before contacting support, you can check if your issue has a solution available. Note that a valid contract and
HPE Passport log on is required to view issue solution documents. To view Insight RS issue solutions,
complete the following steps:
1. Go to www.hpe.com/support/hpesc.
2. In the search field, type Insight Remote Support and click the product name in the suggested results.
3. Click the Documents tab and use the filters to narrow the results to support information, advisories, and
notices.

Supported Insight Remote Support versions

The support policy is to support the current and the previous version of the Insight Remote Support solution
and its software components. To this end, HPE strongly advises that customers always upgrade to the latest
Insight Remote Support version and its components when made available through the embedded software
update capability.

Installation process and prerequisites

Installation process and prerequisites

Installation management and software updates
The latest Insight Remote Support software is always available for download from HPE Software Depot. All
subsequent updates will continue to be managed as you have defined during installation, but can be altered
through the Administrator Settings → Software Updates page. HPE always recommends installing the
latest software available by enabling the Automatically Download and Install option from the Automatic
Update Level drop-down list to benefit from the latest features and product support.

Content Level Updates

Insight Remote Support 7.10 includes a feature to be able to introduce new product support and new intelligent
analysis rules on a regular basis. These updates, where just these capabilities are updated, are known as
Content Level Updates and are made available through the Administrator Settings → Software Updates
page. The CLU package is not a mandatory update. Only apply the CLU package if you need support for the
devices listed for the CLU release in "What is new with Insight Remote Support 7.10" on page 10.
Content Level Updates (CLUs) are provided as additional content to a current release and are always
incorporated into the next release. If available, Content Level Updates are automatically applied to a new
installation of a release and when two or several subsequent CLUs are made available, the latest version will
automatically include any of the previous Content Level Updates.
If you have your Automatic Update Level set to Automatically Download and Install, the CLU update will
install without intervention. If you do not have the Automatically Download and Install Automatic Update
Level set, you will have to manually apply the CLU update.

Application Patch
Known issues are addressed with an Application Patch to a current release when required via the embedded
software management capability. These updates are also incorporated into the next release of Insight Remote
Support.

Manual Software Updates

Insight Remote Support 7.10 offers optional manual software updates. This is applicable for customers, who
have very specific requirements for controlling the source of any software in a production environment, it is
possible to download and store a particular version of Insight Remote Support and disable the automatic
software updates.

Important: HPE strongly recommends that manual software updates are not enabled for any
customer who does not have a legal or strong audit requirement to do so, since updates enable HPE
to automatically supply new software components that contain new product support, improved
capabilities and fixes for any known issues including security. Also, manual software updates to
these systems will require a re-installation of a new Software Depot image of all the components

through the embedded software management capabilities.

HPE Insight Remote Support 7.10: Release Notes Page 18 of 98

Installation process and prerequisites

Patch and Content Level Update versions of Insight Remote Support are not made available for download and
install from HPE Software Depot. The intermediate updates that address known issues (Application Patch)
and that add new device coverage (Content Level Updates) are only made available via the embedded
software updates capability. These are included in the next version for those wishing to do manual software
updates.

Installation directory
Insight Remote Support 7.10 can be installed in a location other than the default directory (C:\ drive). This
includes the default location for program files, configuration files, database files, and log files.

Note: Installation directories must be seen by Microsoft Windows as local drives and not network
drives. Insight RS cannot be executed from a single shared disk by multiple computers.

Multi-byte character input is fully supported within the Insight Remote Support 7.10 software.
If you encounter any problems during installation, view the installation log file, located in the following location:
C:\ProgramData\HP\RS\LOG\rsinstall.log
This is the default file location, and it will be different if you chose a different log file location during installation.

Note: The C:\ProgramData folder is a hidden folder, so you may need to set your folder options to
show hidden folders.

Connectivity prerequisites
Make sure that the correct firewall openings are configured to allow communication with HPE. Insight Remote
Support communicates over HTTPS/443 to submit incidents to and retrieve entitlement information from HPE
Support. HPE strongly recommends configuring only the alias, see Required firewall setting below.
Table 3.7 Required firewall setting
Alias Protocol Description

Hosting Device prerequisites

Hosting Device prerequisites

The Insight Remote Support software requires that the Hosting Device is an HPE ProLiant server running
Microsoft Windows, to allow the monitoring of itself, since this device is critical for the management and
monitoring of your whole IT infrastructure. The Hosting Device can also be installed in a Windows virtual
guest on a VMware, Citrix or Hyper-V virtual machine on a supported HPE ProLiant server.
In addition, the Hosting Device needs to monitor itself for potential problems. This requires the installation and
configuration of the appropriate HPE Insight Management Agents or HPE Insight Management WBEM
Provider. Refer to the "HPE ProLiant G7 and earlier servers" on page 41 section for more details.
Although it is not mandatory, HPE strongly recommends that the Insight Remote Support Hosting Device is
covered by a valid warranty or HPE support contract obligation. The Hosting Device is a critical component of
this solution so keeping it in a healthy condition is of prime importance to ensure effective monitoring.
The Hosting Device can monitor a maximum of 3,500 devices (see "Number of Monitored Devices supported
" on page 23). To monitor more than 3,500 devices, you can set up multiple Hosting Devices in your
environment. However, to avoid duplicate reporting of events and data, make sure you do not monitor the
same device by multiple Hosting Devices.
Operating system and hardware model support are specific to the Hosting Device as follows.

Supported Hosting Device hardware

HPE Insight Remote support is supported only on HPE ProLiant servers:
l For up to 2,500 devices, any HPE ProLiant G4 or above (x64 system) with at least 4 CPU cores and with
Insight Management Agent or WBEM Provider support
l For 2,500 to 3,500 devices, any HPE ProLiant G7 or above (x64 system) with at least 4 CPU cores and
with Insight Management Agent or WBEM Provider support
Refer to the "HPE ProLiant G7 and earlier servers" on page 41 section below for more details of Insight
Management Agent or WBEM Provider support.
Note that ProLiant Gen8 MicroServers are supported as Hosting Devices.

Important: iLO port sharing is not supported on a ProLiant Gen8 or later Hosting Device.

Important: ProLiant 100 Series servers, with the exception of the ProLiant G6 1x0 Series servers,
are not supported as a Hosting Device to host Insight Remote Support since they do not offer a
diagnostic agent to monitor themselves.
ProLiant 1x5 series servers are not supported as they do not have any diagnostic agent support to
monitor themselves.

Hosting Device prerequisites

Minimum and recommended Hosting Device

specifications
The Hosting Device should be a Microsoft Windows ProLiant server that meets the following specifications in
order to ensure that it performs and is available at a high level.
A large variety of Microsoft Windows ProLiant servers can be used as a Hosting Device for this purpose,
dependent on the size of monitored and managed environment.
This section provides guidance that would make any particular Windows ProLiant model and configuration
suitable or not beyond the operating systems and hardware platforms described above.
The section below provides some examples of Hosting Device server specifications compared to the number
of devices that are required to be monitored. The specification can be affected by a number of factors:
l The type and power of the Windows ProLiant server selected
l The number of devices monitored and managed
l If the Hosting Device is also being used for other optional management applications
l Any application sharing the same Hosting Device
Hence, it is not possible to give exact advice on which specification will be required. If performance
degradation is observed, it is likely that the server may need to be compared to the following
recommendations outlined below.
If problems are being encountered, you will be required to meet the minimum requirements in order to gain
HPE support. Not meeting the minimum specification can cause the solution not to load, to stop or to have
significant performance degradation.
The following tables outline the minimum and recommended Hosting Device specifications based on the
results of HPE's quality assurance and performance testing for specific environments.
Since a large variety of Windows ProLiant servers can be used as a Hosting Device and processor speed
alone does not indicate the power of a server, the following sizings are examples of recommended
configurations according to the size of the monitored environment.

(collections are enabled by default, are strongly recommended and in some cases a requirement of the contract
type). Please see the Configuration Collection capabilities section below for details.

For larger number of devices, it is recommended during installation to configure the destination folder for the
database and log files to be on different volumes to increase the performance of the application. See the
Insight Remote Support Installation and Configuration Guide at
www.hpe.com/info/insightremotesupport/docs for details.

Number of Monitored Devices supported

This solution has been optimized to support up to 3,500 monitored devices per Hosting Device. If you need to
monitor more than 3,500 devices, HPE recommends that you use multiple Insight Remote Support
installations, either on multiple physical servers or installed on its own supported virtual machine.
Normally, each physical device counts as one device when calculating the overall maximum device number,
e.g. a ProLiant server and its iLO 4 or iLO 5 only count as a single device. However, there are some
exceptions that need to be taken into account as listed below. The device count is based on the frequency and
size of collections, and the Hosting Device resources required to gather the collections for the device type.
l HPE ProLiant Gen8 and later servers using the embedded iLO 4 or iLO 5 capabilities when AHS collections
are turned on, count as 5 devices (without AHS collections, each server counts as one device)
l Each networking switch counts as 4 devices
l Each HPE StoreVirtual 4xxx Storage Node counts as 30 devices
l Each HPE StoreAll Network Storage System counts as 4 devices
l Each Tape Library counts as 4 devices
l Each HPE P2000/MSA device counts as 4 devices
l Each HPE P6000 Enterprise Virtual Array counts as 8 devices
l Each VMware® vCenter™ server installation counts as 4 devices
l Any device that is configured as part of a SAN collection, adds an additional count of 4 devices

Configuration Collection capabilities

Insight Remote Support 7.10 has the ability to collect configuration information from your monitored devices
managed centrally from the Hosting Device.
Collections require no additional collection agent on your monitored devices and are by default turned on.
Collections are not available for all devices.
Collections are initiated when the devices register and further collections are automatically scheduled by
default. These configuration collections enable the following:
l HPE Support to provide improved technical support.
l Data collections provide HPE (or your nominated HPE Authorized Channel Partner) with information on the
monitoring health of each of your devices. This is displayed in Insight Online if you have chosen this option.
l Certain HPE Proactive services have a mandatory requirement for remote support monitoring and
collections enabled on all devices for the customer to receive all the features and service deliverables
provided under the service. This means HPE is not obligated to provide delivery of proactive entitlements
for disabled collections for these devices until such time as the remote support monitoring & collection
functionality is restored.

HPE Insight Remote Support 7.10: Release Notes Page 23 of 98

Hosting Device prerequisites

l Optionally, if during installation or subsequently you have requested HPE or your preferred HPE Authorized
Chanel Partner to provide recommendations that may improve your environment.
Collections are gathered by Insight RS and then securely transferred to HPE. By default, they are not stored
locally on the Hosting Device. However, if you want to see the data that has been sent to HPE in order to
audit the content for privacy and security reasons, you can run an rsadmin command to enable local storage
of collections. See the Online Help for details.
If you prefer to store collections locally, dependent on the collection type, additional disk space needs to be
allocated to allow configuration collections to operate correctly. Note, all collections have a number that are
retained for historic records. Additionally, collections are compressed by a ratio of ten to one when they are
retained but consideration for disk space should be given if multiple collections are run at the same time. The
only exception is Active Health System (AHS) Collections that are not compressed. Please see "Collection
types and disk space requirements" below for details on how to calculate the required disk space.

HPE Servers

HPE ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers

The minimum supported iLO 4 firmware version to register Insight Remote Support through the iLO 4 is:
l For HPE ProLiant Gen8 servers: Version 1.10 or later is required.
l For HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers: Version 2.00 or later is required.

Important: To address third-party software vulnerabilities, HPE recommends using iLO 4 2.03 or
later. To access the iLO 4 2.03 or later web interface, you must enable TLS in your browser. TLS is
the successor to Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

You can download the latest firmware from the HPE Support Center: www.hpe.com/support/ilo4.

Note: When connecting to a ProLiant Gen8 or later server through the iLO, the iLO will maintain a
connection to Insight RS even when the operating system of the server has changed or after an
update to the iLO firmware.

HPE ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers can be configured for Insight Remote Support using one of the
following three methods (for information provided by each method, see "Information provided by Agentless
Management and Insight Management Agents" on the next page):

Important: Only one configuration method should be selected; attempting to configure more than
one will result in an unsupported configuration. For instructions on how to configure Insight Remote
Support for HPE ProLiant servers, please see the HPE Insight Remote Support Monitored Devices
Configuration Guide at www.hpe.com/info/insightremotesupport/docs.

1. Register with an Insight Remote Support Hosting Device through the HPE ProLiant iLO 4 or Intelligent
Provisioning interface.
2. Discover the HPE ProLiant server iLO 4 directly from the Insight RS Console.
3. Install the appropriate diagnostic agents and then discover the HPE ProLiant server itself (not the iLO 4)
from the Insight RS Console.
This requires the installation and configuration of the appropriate HPE Insight Management (IM) Agents
or HPE Insight Management WBEM Providers on these servers. HPE recommends installing HPE
Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2012.06.0 (B) or higher. For details see www.hpe.com/servers/spp.
Important: If you use SNMP Agents or WBEM Providers you must still add RIBCL protocol credentials
in the Insight RS Console; RIBCL is required for AHS Collections and for Insight RS to monitor the
server.
If your device is connected through the iLO, Insight RS will detect if the iLO is registered with another remote
support application (HPE OneView, direct connect to Insight Online, or another Insight RS host). If Insight RS
detects the iLO registered to another remote support application, it will disable the server and not perform a
RIBCL, WMI, WBEM or SNMP subscription. If you are using Agents/Providers and your iLO is not visible,
check to ensure the iLO is not registered to a different remote support application.

Tip: You can use RIBCL XML scripts to register a group of servers. For more information, see the
iLO 4 Scripting and Command Line Guide at www.hpe.com/info/ilo/docs. You can also download
sample scripts for Windows and Linux.

Important: Ensure that the Agentless Management Service (AMS) is enabled, the operating
system is running and the Remote Insight Board Common Language Protocol (RIBCL) credentials
for the device are entered in the Insight RS Console before registering with Insight Remote
Support.

with AMS and Insight Management Agents columns.
2 Supported servers only. For more information, see the server specifications.

3 This configuration does not write the same OS logs as the Insight Management Agents. For example, RAID device
status is not reported.
4 Supported with iLO 4 2.30 and later.

5 Supported with iLO 4 2.50 and later.

6 The data supplied by Agentless Management is not as extensive as the data supplied by the SNMP agents.
7iLO 4 1.05 and later supports AMS-based OS logging for Linux (/var/log/messages for Red Hat and
/var/log/syslog for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server , Debian, and Ubuntu), Windows, and VMware. iLO 4 1.10
and later supports Smart Array logging.

For more information on using the Agentless Management Service compared to operating system agents, see
the document HPE Agentless Management and the transition from OS-based agents at
h20195.www2.hpe.com/V2/getpdf.aspx/4AA6-6053ENW.pdf.
For more information on iLO 4 and Agentless Management Service (AMS), see the HPE iLO 4 User Guide
available at www.hpe.com/info/ilo/docs.

Important: If you want to monitor attached devices you need to install the HPE Service Pack for
ProLiant as detailed in the ProLiant server section that corresponds to the operating system below.
RIBCL credentials are required for all HPE ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers regardless if the
embedded capabilities or the diagnostic agent are used.

Important: When setting up the iLO 4, it is important to set the time zone. If the time zone is not
set, events sent to Insight Remote Support are displayed with a GMT offset. In iLO 4, browse to
Administration → Network → SNTP Settings to set the correct time zone.

HPE Edgeline systems

HPE ProLiant server cartridges for the HPE Edgeline EL1000, EL4000, and EL8000 enclosures can be
monitored by Insight RS through the iLO.
Because Insight RS monitors Edgeline ProLiant servers through the iLO, Insight RS supports any operating
system that is also supported on the hardware. However, if you want Insight RS to gather operating system
information you must install Agentless Management Service (AMS) on the ProLiant server for that particular
operating system.
For a detailed list of supported operating systems on ProLiant servers, see www.hpe.com/info/ossupport.

Note: Edgeline systems that use iLO 4 require iLO 4 firmware version iLO 2.52, which is included in
Edgeline Component Pack 2017.08.0.

The following HPE ProLiant server cartridges are supported:

HPE Servers

HPE ProLiant G7 and earlier servers

The following HPE ProLiant servers and their attached devices including MSA storage are supported when
HPE Insight Management (IM) Agents revision 7.1 or higher or HPE Insight Management WBEM Providers
revision 2.3.0.0 or higher are installed on these servers. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade to the
latest SNMP Agent and WBEM Provider versions as some models are only supported with a later version.

Note: Not all ProLiant models are supported by the WBEM (WMI) providers. Refer to the provider
supported product list to determine whether your model is supported; if it is not, use SNMP. The
Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) is a software bundle that includes drivers, utilities, and
management agents for ProLiant device(s). The most current version is also available at:
www.hpe.com/info/SPP/download. See the Service Pack for ProLiant Server Support Guide at
www.hpe.com/info/spp/docs for specific server and management agent support.

Important: HPE only provides limited remote support for customers using HPE ProLiant rack
servers prior to generation 4. As with standard support, Insight Remote Support version 7.x will
attempt to discover these products as remotely monitored HPE products and send information
about failure events to HPE. However, if there are issues with the operation of the remote
monitoring features of Insight Remote Support version 7.x for these specific products, including the
remote discovery or the reporting of failure events to HPE, then HPE will resolve such issues in a
commercially reasonable manner but without guarantee of an immediate response or a resolution. If
a failure event is successfully received at HPE, it is managed according to the support level
agreement. Note that ProLiant BL servers prior to generation 4 are not limited by this restriction.

Important: HPE ProLiant 1x5 series servers are not supported as they do not have any supported
diagnostic agent.

Note: Insight RS supports iLO Shared Network Port and NIC Teaming. NIC Teaming support
requires iLO 3 firmware version 1.70 or greater.

Important: Support for Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2
is limited to the full server version only and is not available for the core version as much of the
required functionality is unavailable for these versions.

You must install the HPE Service Pack for ProLiant and all providers that ship with it. You can choose to
use either SNMP or WMI, however to gather SAN Collections for a ProLiant Windows server, you must use
WMI. HPE recommends installing the most recent version of HPE Service Pack for ProLiant available for

Install the proper WBEM providers on HP-UX. These generally are part of the feature set of HP-UX and will
update through patches and software updates on the device as appropriate.
WBEM is implemented on HP-UX through System Fault Management (SFM). HPE recommends installing
SFM through the WBEMMgmtBundle available at: www.hpe.com/info/swdepot/WBEMMgmtBundle. For
required SFM prerequisites and configuration information, see the HPE Insight Remote Support Monitored
Devices Configuration Guide. See the System Fault Management Release Notes for more details and

HPE BladeSystem Enclosures

Insight Remote Support monitoring is limited to the Enclosure and the Onboard Administrator (OA). Monitoring
of the devices within the Enclosure requires the additional steps of discovery and configuration of those
devices to be monitored.

Note: HPE BladeSystem c-Class interconnect modules (Virtual Connect, Ethernet, Fibre Channel,
InfiniBand and SAS interconnects) will automatically be monitored via the OA management module,
if it is configured for monitoring.

HPE BladeSystem c-Class Enclosures can be monitored using the embedded management capabilities in the
OA or by configuring SNMP in the OA depending on the OA firmware level:

Important: Do not attempt to use both configuration methods on the same Hosting Device. This is
not supported and monitoring will not work correctly.

l Option 1: OA firmware level 3.60 or above supports the embedded management capabilities. Register
with an Insight Remote Support Hosting Device through the OA to send service events to the Hosting
Device. If you have configured a primary and standby OA in your environment, ensure that the firmware
version for both OAs is 3.60 or higher.
Important: To address third-party software vulnerabilities, HPE recommends using OA 4.30 or later. To
access the OA 4.30 or later web interface, you must enable TLS in your browser. TLS is the successor to
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
l Option 2: All OA firmware levels support connecting to Insight RS using SNMP. Configure the SNMP
protocol to send traps to the Hosting Device. If you have configured a primary and standby OA in your
environment, discover only one of the OAs and not both.
Important: FIPS Top Secret Mode and SNMP are not compatible. If you choose to use SNMP, you must
disable FIPS Top Secret Mode.
l OA firmware level prior to 3.55 requires the use of SNMP. Embedded management is not supported.
l OA firmware level 4.01 or above supports SNMPv3.
Important: Insight RS only supports SNMPv3 traps, and does not support SNMPv3 Informs. Insight
RS listens on port 1162 for SNMPv3 traps, and your SNMPv3 passwords must be at least 8 characters
long.
Note: If using OA firmware versions 3.55 or 3.56 HPE recommends you upgrade to version 3.60.
You can download the latest firmware from the HPE Support Center: www.hpe.com/support/hpesc.

Insight RS also supports NonStop System Console (NSC) and Virtual Tape Controllers (VTC) for NonStop
systems.
For more details on how to install and configure Insight RS for use in a NonStop environment, see the Insight
Remote Support for NonStop document available at
support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c04623664.

NonStop Hosting Device hardware requirements

For a NonStop System console (NSC) to be used as a Hosting Device for Insight Remote Support, it must
meet the minimum hardware and software requirements for a Hosting Device. This option is ideal if you are
only monitoring your NonStop system.
If customers want to monitor their entire environment, HPE recommends that NonStop customers use a
dedicated Hosting Device so that they can monitor all of their servers, storage, SAN and network devices
along with their NonStop servers. In this situation HPE does not recommend the use of the NonStop Console
(NSC) as a Hosting Device because the NSC resides on a dedicated maintenance LAN environment.
Please contact your HPE Account team to setup remote monitoring for your NonStop server systems.

Note: The ML110 G5 is supported as a Hosting Device only when also used as a NonStop System
console (NSC). While the ML110 G5 can be used simultaneously as both an NSC and a Hosting
Device for Insight RS, it does not provide the self-diagnosis capabilities that are characteristic of
other Hosting Devices supported by Insight RS.

HPE Servers

HPE AlphaServer systems

HPE only provides limited remote support for customers using HPE AlphaServers. As with standard support,
Insight Remote Support version 7.x will attempt to discover these products as remotely monitored HPE
products and send information about failure events to HPE.
However, if there are issues with the operation of the remote monitoring features of Insight Remote Support
version 7.x for these specific products, including the remote discovery or the reporting of failure events to
HPE, then HPE will resolve such issues in a commercially reasonable manner but without guarantee of an
immediate response or a resolution. If a failure event is successfully received at HPE, it is managed
according to the support level agreement.
The following HPE AlphaServer systems have this limited support:

HPE Storage

HPE Storage
Insight RS supports monitoring and collections for the following HPE Storage products.

Important: Insight RS requires administrator access to the monitored devices. Discovery and
collections require privileged access in order to retrieve information about the monitored devices.

HPE P6000 Enterprise Virtual Array systems

Make sure that the Event Log Monitoring Collector (ELMC) is installed on all Storage Management Servers
(SMS) where P6000 Command View is installed. ELMC is made available through the Insight RS Software
Updates feature and needs to be manually installed on the SMS. This does not apply to EVAs using the Array
Based Management (ABM) module. See "Event Log Monitoring Collector" on page 98 for details on ELMC.

Important: For all P6000/EVA devices, Insight RS supports P6000 Command View 9.4 through
10.3.x.

Important: TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 are disabled by default beginning with Insight RS 7.10 Patch 3.
WCCproxy only supports TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. If TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 are disabled, then
EVA/P6000 devices with not discover correctly or be able to gather event log data from the P6000
Command View server. See the HPE Insight Remote Support Monitored Devices Configuration
Guide for how to enable TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1.

Important: P6000 Command View 10.3.8 introduced the ability to disable TLS 1.0 and 1.1
protocols, but Insight RS does not support TLS 1.2 exclusive access. For more information, see the
HPE P6000 Command View Suite User Guide section "Disabling TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 protocols in
Server Based Management environments" at: www.hpe.com/support/hpesc.

HPE StoreVirtual storage (formerly P4000 SAN

Solutions/LeftHand storage)
SNMP needs to be configured and enabled for each Storage Node to be able to send events to the Hosting
Device. SNMP is enabled by default in HPE LeftHand OS (formerly SAN/iQ) and should not be modified.
Each Storage Node counts as 30 monitored devices within Insight Remote Support. Ensure that you allocate
enough disk space for HPE StoreVirtual (P4000) collections. The required disk space is dependent on the
number of HPE StoreVirtual Storage Nodes. See the "Configuration Collection capabilities" on page 23
section above for calculating the required disk space.
For details and future updates to supported platforms, see the HPE StoreVirtual 4000 Storage Compatibility
Matrix available at www.hpe.com/info/StoreVirtualcompatibility.

HPE XP/P9000 Disk Arrays

HPE Insight RS software provides HPE XP/P9000 Disk Array device support for C-Track submissions to
HPE using the Internet connectivity method. Registration with Insight RS occurs during the Truststore
configuration on the SVP.
Note that XP/P9000 devices are not serviceable by customers. Support on XP/P9000 devices is delivered as
part of your Mission Critical Support contract. Please contact your local HPE account representative for help
to implement this solution.

HPE Insight Remote Support 7.10: Release Notes Page 73 of 98

HPE Storage

XP/P9000 devices support configuration collections; however, you cannot manually run collections within the
Insight RS Console. All collections are sent to Insight RS from the XP/P9000 devices.
The Insight RS solution for XP/P9000 Disk Arrays is simplified to no longer require SIM and XPAIM to monitor
the array. Furthermore, the HPE XP/P9000 Disk Array must run the required Firmware (FW) version and the
required C-Track version installed on the Service Processor (SVP) as listed below:
Table 3.61 Required firmware and C-Track versions

SNMP needs to be configured and enabled for HPE Storage Switches to be able to send events to the
Hosting Device.

Important: Insight RS requires administrator access to the monitored devices. Discovery and
collections require privileged access in order to retrieve information about the monitored devices.

HPE B-series Fibre Channel switches

Test trap support for HPE B-series Fibre Channel switches requires the installation of Fabric Operating
system v6.3.0b firmware or higher. See the HPE Fabric OS 6.3.0b Customer Advisory or details.

Note: Older 1GB Brocade switches (1 GB) and M-Class Switches are not supported.

Important: HPE Insight RS supports the secure SNMPv3 protocol on B-Series switches that
support SNMPv3. Insight RS only supports SNMPv3 traps, and does not support SNMPv3
Informs. Insight RS listens on port 1162 for SNMPv3 traps, and your SNMPv3 passwords must be
at least 8 characters long. Refer to your device's documentation to determine the versions of SNMP
your device supports.

Management platform integration

Management platform integration

HPE SNMP Service Event Adapter
The SNMP Service Event Adapter provides the ability to forward an SNMP trap to another management
application or ticketing system when an event has been sent to HPE for intervention. It contains the same
information as displayed in the user interface, including support case status and case ID. To properly interpret
the trap, your receiving application must be configured to use the cpqService MIB, which is available for
download in the Systems Insight Manager - MIB Kit at:
http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04272529. For details, see the HPE
Insight Remote Support Installation and Configuration Guide

HPE OneView
Insight Remote Support and HPE Insight Online are complementary applications to HPE OneView, delivering
complete life cycle infrastructure management for accelerating IT service delivery and support. HPE OneView
and Insight RS have separate discovery and monitoring functions that provide complimentary management
and support capabilities. HPE OneView provides device management, while Insight RS provides remote
monitoring, automated call logging, faster problem resolution, and near-100% first-time fix accuracy. The HPE
Insight Online dashboard can be used to track service events and support cases, view device configurations,
and proactively monitor your HPE contracts and warranties for devices monitored by Insight RS.
Insight RS and OneView coexist in your environment, but must be installed on separate host servers.

What happens if HPE OneView registers a device already

monitored by Insight RS?
For devices that could be covered by either Remote Support from OneView or Insight RS, such as ProLiant
Gen 8 or later servers, there is a mechanism to prevent contention. OneView Remote Support takes
precedence.
If an eligible device is imported into HPE OneView, and Remote Support is enabled, HPE OneView will
register the device to itself, even if that device was previously registered to Insight RS. This happens
automatically in order to avoid the same device being monitored by both Insight RS and HPE OneView RS
platforms and having duplicate support cases created. Subsequent service events and data collections from
that device are then directed to HPE OneView. This applies to any version of Insight RS 7.x and HPE
OneView 3.1 and later.
This will happen if the iLO is registered to:
l an Insight RS 7.x client (central connect)
l a different HPE OneView instance
l HPE directly (direct connect)
On the Insight RS instance that had been monitoring the device, the device is unregistered and marked as
disabled. Do not re-register the device in Insight RS, because it will be "taken back" when HPE OneView
refreshes its devices.
If you want Insight RS to also delete the device from the Insight RS Console, open a Command Prompt
window on the Hosting Device and type the following command:

HPE Insight Online integration

HPE Insight Online integration

HPE Insight Online is an addition to the HPE Support Center portal for one stop, secure access to product and
HPE support information personalized to your IT environment. It is available at no additional cost as part of
your warranty or contractual support agreement with HPE.
You can configure automatic integration into the HPE Insight Online portal when installing Insight Remote
Support or subsequently, by entering your HPE Passport ID and password. On login into HPE Support
Center, within the My IT Environment view, you will automatically see all devices that are registered with
Insight Remote Support 7.x.
If all Insight Remote Support registered devices do not appear automatically in HPE Insight Online, it may be
possible that the device was already registered to another person in your company. To see this device in your
view, you need them to share or transfer ownership to yourself. For details and prerequisites, please see the
Getting Started with HPE Insight Online Guide at www.hpe.com/info/insightremotesupport/docs for details.

Important: When using Insight Online, each HPE Passport ID can support a maximum of 1,500
devices. Make sure the sum total of monitored devices does not exceed 1,500 devices, even when
the HPE Passport ID is used across multiple Insight RS clients. Additionally, during unusually large
demands on Insight Online, you may see performance lags with HPE Passport IDs that support
more than 1,200 devices across multiple Insight RS clients.

Important: When you disable your connection to Insight Online or change to a different HPE
Passport account, the change takes time to be reflected in Insight Online. Wait until all of your
devices have been removed from your current Insight Online account before connecting to a new
account.

Issues and suggested actions

Issues and suggested actions

Chrome browser version 53.0.2785.116 JavaScript
errors
Chrome browser version 53.0.2785.116 displays JavaScript errors in the Chrome Developer Tools console
when using the Insight RS Console. These errors do not affect the Insight RS functionality. This behavior is
corrected in the later Chrome versions.
If you see these errors, HPE recommends you upgrade your Chrome browser.

HPE ProLiant Gen8 servers are displayed by their

serial number
The HPE ProLiant Gen8 server device name may be displayed as a serial number (indicated by an S/N prefix)
in the Insight RS Console in the System Name column. This will happen if remote support for the server is
enabled while the server's operating system is not running or the Agentless Management Service (AMS) is not
installed and enabled. To enable the IP address to be displayed instead of the serial number, the following
steps can be taken:
l Before registering for Insight Remote Support via the iLO 4, or before initiating the discovery of the HPE
ProLiant Gen8 server's iLO 4 from the Insight RS console:
l Ensure that the minimum supported firmware version (1.10 or later) is installed to register Insight RS
through the iLO 4
l Ensure that the Agentless Management Service (AMS) is enabled, and the operating system is running
l Ensure that the Remote Insight Board Common Language Protocol (RIBCL) credentials for the server
are entered in the Insight RS Console
l If you have already successfully registered or discovered the HPE ProLiant Gen8 server in Insight RS:
l Ensure that the Agentless Management Service (AMS) is enabled, and the operating system is running
l Ensure that the Remote Insight Board Common Language Protocol (RIBCL) credentials for the server
are entered in the Insight RS Console
l Click on the serial number in the System Name column and then choose Discover Device. The re-
discovery of the device will result in the IP address being displayed.

Issues and suggested actions

Service events display an incorrect timestamp in

the Insight RS Console
When viewing events and collections in the HPE Insight RS Console using a web browser, then any time
displayed will convert to the time zone set in that browser. This is to ensure that the user can see the event
timing using their local time zone. If there are discrepancies between the event time and the event processed
time, then you should check the time and time zone setting on the monitored device. If this is being set
externally from a time server or via DHCP, make sure that these are correctly connected and set to the
appropriate time. Note, even if this issue is seen, it will not affect the efficient delivery of service by HPE or an
HPE Authorized Service Partner as the Hosting Device time is used as a reference for service delivery.

A device appears without a discovery taking place

If a customer configures an SNMP diagnostic agent on a monitored device with the trap destination set to the
Insight RS Hosting Device, it is assumed that the intention is to have this device monitored. Hence, if this
device sends an SNMP trap to the Hosting Device, it will automatically initiate a discovery.
Note, that default credentials are applied and you should check to make sure that event monitoring and
configuration collections are working correctly for this device.
Another way that a device can be discovered without Hosting Device initiation is if a customer registers an
HPE ProLiant Gen8 or Gen9 server for remote monitoring through its iL0 4 registration process.

Unexpected device discovery

A larger group of devices can be discovered in the following situations:
l When discovery settings are setup, a larger range of devices specified than expected.
l When Insight RS 7.10 is installed on a server that uses the same IP address as the previous server Insight
RS was installed on. This happens when monitored devices in the IT environment still have the SNMP trap
destination or WMI/WBEM subscription in place that sends events to that IP address. When these events
are sent, this will trigger a discovery and that device will appear in the Insight RS Console.

Suggested action: Delete or disable the devices that you don't want Insight RS to monitor.

Duplicate records created in Insight Online when

the same device is discovered twice
Two records can be created in HPE Insight Online for a device in the following scenarios:
l Scenario 1: A device is partially discovered by Insight RS, detecting OS and network information, but no
serial number or product number information. When discovered again, full information is discovered.
l Scenario 2: A device has SNMP trap forwarding set to the Hosting Device and the device was not
discovered by Insight RS prior to receiving the event.

Suggested action: Duplicate records cannot be removed at this time.

Issues and suggested actions

Multiple location ID and partner configured

In a small percentage of cases, HPE can store more than one partner location ID for the same partner user in
our backend system.
In most cases, if you are a partner user, you can determine your partner location ID by logging in to the HPE
Global Partner portal. The location ID you see in the top left hand corner of the screen is your location ID. If
after installing Insight Remote Support using this location ID you are not able to see the My Customer tab in
Insight Online, then HPE Support can help you determine the correct location ID to use.

Suggested action: Contact HPE Support to determine which partner location ID is active in Insight Online/Insight
RS. Case information will be sent to the service provider listed in Insight RS for the customer.
The Insight Online My Customer system will display the correct data for the partner if the
partner uses the login verified by HPE Support.

Cannot log on to the Insight RS Console as an

Administrator
You are using a domain user account and this account is a member of a domain group which in turn is a
member of the domain Administrators group. Additionally, User Account Control (UAC) is turned on. For
example:
l You cannot log on to the Insight RS Console with user MYDOMAIN\myusername and,
l MYDOMAIN\myusername is a member of the group MYDOMAIN\specialusers.
l MYDOMAIN\specialusers has been added to the MYDOMAIN\Administrators group.
l User Account Control (UAC) is turned on.

Suggested action: To work around this issue, any of the following actions enable you to log on as an
Administrator:
l Turn off User Account Control (UAC) on the Hosting Device
l Add your user account to a local Administrators group on the Hosting Device. For
example, add MYDOMAIN\myusername to the local HostingDevice\Administrators
group
l Add your user account directly to the domain Administrators group. For example, add
MYDOMAIN\myusername to the MYDOMAIN\Administrators group directly.
l Create a new local Administrators account and use that to log on to the Hosting Device.
For example, create an Administrative account named HostingDevice\AdminAccount
and log on with that.

Issues and suggested actions

HPRSMain service fails to start after upgrade

After Insight RS has been upgraded successfully, after the next reboot the HPRSMain service fails to start.
The upgrade process may request the reboot or HPRSMain can fail to start after the first reboot after an
upgrade.
Suggested action
1. Open the Control Panel, and navigate to Programs and Features. Note what version of Insight RS is
installed to verify that the correct version is listed.
2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory where the Insight RS installer file was downloaded. If
Software Updates was used in the upgrade, the kit is located at %HP_RS_DATA%SWM\LANDINGZONE.
3. Rename the file from .exe to .zip.
4. Right-click on the .zip file and select Extract all…. Select a directory or use the default.
5. Open a Command Prompt window as Administrator and navigate to the extraction directory.
6. Run the following command to repair the installation:
msiexec /f hprs7kit.msi /lv "%HP_RS_LOG%\hprs_recovery.log"
7. This process may continue without interruption, but it is possible that the below dialog will appear. If it
does, then provide the path where you extracted the .zip in step 4.

8. If you want to view the recovery log file, once the repair operation completes, open a Windows Explorer
window and enter %HP_RS_LOG% in the address bar. Sort the files by date modified, and you should see
the recovery log file near the top.
9. Delete the following to clean up disk space:
a. The original hprs_recovery.log file from %HP_RS_LOG%
b. The entire directory where you unpacked the .exe in step 4.
The recovery operation is complete.

Issues and suggested actions

Command View for Tape Libraries device displays

an error icon
After discovery, the CVTL@<device> that Insight RS lists will always display an error icon ( ) in the Warranty
& Contract and status column.

WMI Mapper fails to start

When WMI Mapper is installed on a Windows 2008 R2 Hosting Device, the WMI Mapper service may fail to
start with the "NT SERVICE\MAPPER" user and the WMI Mapper Indications service might fail to start with
the "NT SERVICE\WbemConsumer" user. This occurs on a Windows 2008 R2 Hosting Device that is part of
a domain whose security policy is being controlled by a domain controller, in which the above two users are
not given the log on as service right.
The WMI Mapper and WMI Mapper Indications services fail to start and while trying to start these services
from the services.msc console, the following error appears:
Windows could not start the Pegasus WMI Mapper service on Local Computer. Error 1069: The
service did not start due to a logon failure.
A more detailed error is also listed in the Systems Logs of the Windows Event Viewer.
The problem occurs because in Windows 2008 R2, Mapper and Mapper Indications Services are started with
users having lower privileges. By default a standalone Windows 2008 R2 server will have these users with the
said privileges. However in the case of a server whose security policies are controlled by a domain controller,
these users might be removed from the default set of users and hence the services will not start.
You can choose to follow any one of the below workarounds based on your requirements:
l You change the Mapper and Mapper Indications Service to start with a privileged user account such as the
“localSystem” account. This can be made by editing the properties of each of the services using the
services.msc console.
l You can choose to give the following two users “NT SERVICE\WMI Mapper” and “NT
SERVICE\WbemConsumer” the “log on as a service” right using the “User Rights Assignment” option in
the Security Policy Editor (secpol.msc).

HPRSMAIN service shutdown error

When the HPRSMAIN service needs to be stopped or restarted, such as during an Insight RS upgrade or
patch install, the following error may appear during shutdown: "Error 1053: The service did not
respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
The issue occurs when the system load is high, due to non-Insight RS processes for example, and this
causes Insight RS to exceed the Microsoft Windows process shutdown timeout threshold.

Issues and suggested actions

McAfee BSOD issue

Problem: McAfee has a known bug that causes a BSOD when an application attempts to uninstall a file
named device_manager.js.
Resolutions:
There are three ways to resolve the problem:
1. Upgrade to a newer version of McAfee (see link above), or
2. Create an exclusion for the On-Access Scan for the file device_manager.js (see link above), or
3. Pre-delete the file before attempting uninstall/upgrade:
a. Log into the system as an Administrator.
b. Open a Windows Explorer window, and navigate to
“%HP_RS_PROGRAM%\ui\remotesupport\plugins”.
This is usually “<C:\Program Files\HP\RS\ui\remotesupport\plugins>”, but it may differ if the
Insight RS client was installed elsewhere.
c. Delete the entire “device_manager” subdirectory there. (Deleting the individual file is risky, and may
cause the BSOD. Deleting the directory is safe.)
d. Uninstall or upgrade the Insight RS normally.

Appendix A: Updating existing Insight RS
installations
Upgrading from previous versions of 7.x
Upgrading by uninstalling a previous version of Insight RS 7.x and then installing the latest version is not a
supported method to upgrade Insight RS. When the 7.x software is uninstalled, residual data is left behind in
case the same version is going to be re-installed, and mismatches in this data can cause Insight RS to shut
down some processes. Upgrade using one of the supported methods provided in the Insight Remote Support

Port adjustments needed

TCP/IP port 7905 needs to be opened for Insight RS 7.x to communicate with monitored devices that use
WBEM/WMI.
Insight RSS and RSA use TCP/IP port 7906 to communicate from the monitored devices to the Hosting
Device/Central Management Server. Insight RS 7.x now uses port 7906 for the Insight RS Console and when
using the Onboard Administrator and HPE ProLiant Gen8 and later iLO embedded Remote Support
capabilities.
Insight RS 7.x uses port 7905 to communicate with monitored devices that use WBEM/WMI, such as HP-
UX, Linux and Windows servers. If you secured port 7905 when using Insight RSS or RSA, you must now
make sure TCP/IP port 7905 is open on your monitored devices, the Hosting Device and any firewalls
between the two. For more information about specific port settings, see the HPE Insight RS Security White
Paper.

Appendix B: Event Log Monitoring Collector
The Event Log Monitoring Collector (ELMC) provides error condition detection of the event log of specific
monitored endpoint system and communicates these events to Insight Remote Support for analysis.
The ELMC software is made available on the Hosting Device by downloading it from the Administrators →
Software Updates page. The device specific ELMC versions will be made available in the download folder on
the Hosting Device:
%HP_RS_DATA%\SWM\LANDINGZONE\ELMC
This folder defaults to C:\ProgramData\HP\RS\DATA\SWM\LANDINGZONE\ELMC. This is a hidden folder, so you
may need to set your folder options to show hidden folders.
The appropriate ELMC software should be distributed and installed on the monitored device. Note that when
the Software Updates page shows a status of Installed, this only means that the ELMC package has been
installed on the Hosting Device. You must still distribute and install ELMC on your monitored devices.
This includes ELMC versions for:
l HPE OpenVMS on HPE Integrity servers and AlphaServers
l VSI OpenVMS on HPE Integrity servers
l Windows 2003 on HPE Integrity servers
l Windows on ProLiant servers (x86, x64) when monitoring EVAs with P6000 Command View

Note: ELMC installation is required for Storage Management Servers (SMS) monitoring EVA P6000
storage devices.

The following ELMC versions are supported with Insight Remote Support 7.10:
l ELMC 6.2 and above
HPE always recommends installing the latest version.

Note: When upgrading to ELMC version 6.4, the incorrect version number is displayed in the
upgrade window. After performing the upgrade, the correct version number of 6.4 will show in the
Programs and Features window and when you run the wccproxy version command.
