Product architecture
Insight Remote Support leverages a distributed architecture that is divided into two types of systems: Hosting
Device and Monitored Device.
l Hosting Device: This is a Windows ProLiant server or Windows virtual guest on a VMware, Citrix or
Hyper-V virtual machine that hosts the Insight Remote Support application and initiates all central remote
support operations. This includes the collection of events and configuration information from the monitored
devices, and transmission of this information securely to HPE for fast and effective problem resolution.
l Monitored Device: These are the supported hardware devices that are monitored for hardware events and
from which configuration information is collected. The events and collections are gathered by the Insight
Remote Support application on the Hosting Device and then securely transferred to HPE. Response from
HPE or your preferred HPE Authorized Channel Partner will be delivered in line with the warranty or
contractual support agreement purchased for the device reporting a failure.
Important: The rsadmin command is a powerful tool that can be used to manage the Insight RS
application. The rsadmin command is executable by any local users on the Hosting Device. HPE
recommends that you restrict access to the Hosting Device to only authorized users to prevent
unwanted changes to the Insight RS configuration on the Hosting Device.
Important: Insight RS requires administrator access to the monitored devices. Discovery and
collections require privileged access in order to retrieve information about the monitored devices.
Product support
It is always advisable that you read the Insight Remote Support Installation and Configuration Guide before
installation. This document is designed to help and guide you through a successful installation and
configuration. However, if you need further support for Insight Remote Support then this is available through
your local HPE Response Center. Please refer to www.hpe.com/services/getconnected, where you will find a
wealth of information on Insight Remote Support. This includes access to FAQ's, peer to peer forums, and the
contact details of HPE Support.
Before contacting support, you can check if your issue has a solution available. Note that a valid contract and
HPE Passport log on is required to view issue solution documents. To view Insight RS issue solutions,
complete the following steps:
1. Go to www.hpe.com/support/hpesc.
2. In the search field, type Insight Remote Support and click the product name in the suggested results.
3. Click the Documents tab and use the filters to narrow the results to support information, advisories, and
notices.
Application Patch
Known issues are addressed with an Application Patch to a current release when required via the embedded
software management capability. These updates are also incorporated into the next release of Insight Remote
Support.
Important: HPE strongly recommends that manual software updates are not enabled for any
customer who does not have a legal or strong audit requirement to do so, since updates enable HPE
to automatically supply new software components that contain new product support, improved
capabilities and fixes for any known issues including security. Also, manual software updates to
these systems will require a re-installation of a new Software Depot image of all the components
(configuration details are retained) rather than just accepting the new software made available
through the embedded software management capabilities.
Patch and Content Level Update versions of Insight Remote Support are not made available for download and
install from HPE Software Depot. The intermediate updates that address known issues (Application Patch)
and that add new device coverage (Content Level Updates) are only made available via the embedded
software updates capability. These are included in the next version for those wishing to do manual software
updates.
Installation directory
Insight Remote Support 7.10 can be installed in a location other than the default directory (C:\ drive). This
includes the default location for program files, configuration files, database files, and log files.
Note: Installation directories must be seen by Microsoft Windows as local drives and not network
drives. Insight RS cannot be executed from a single shared disk by multiple computers.
Multi-byte character input is fully supported within the Insight Remote Support 7.10 software.
If you encounter any problems during installation, view the installation log file, located in the following location:
C:\ProgramData\HP\RS\LOG\rsinstall.log
This is the default file location, and it will be different if you chose a different log file location during installation.
Note: The C:\ProgramData folder is a hidden folder, so you may need to set your folder options to
show hidden folders.
Connectivity prerequisites
Make sure that the correct firewall openings are configured to allow communication with HPE. Insight Remote
Support communicates over HTTPS/443 to submit incidents to and retrieve entitlement information from HPE
Support. HPE strongly recommends configuring only the alias, see Required firewall setting below.
Table 3.7 Required firewall setting
Alias Protocol Description
Firewall api.support.hpe.com HTTPS Used by the Insight Remote Support software to submit incidents
Setting to and retrieve contract and warranty information from the HPE
data center
You must open port 7906 on the Hosting Device to access the Insight Remote Support components on the
Hosting Device from other systems inside of the same network. Also make sure that Windows firewall allows
the connection to port 7906.
For a complete list of ports used by Insight RS, see the HPE Insight Remote Support Security White Paper at
www.hpe.com/info/insightremotesupport/docs.
See the "Port adjustments needed" on page 97 section for required port adjustments when upgrading Insight
Remote Support.
Important: IPv4 networking protocol is the only supported version. Currently, IPv6 is not supported
and needs to be disabled on the Hosting Device.
The Hosting Device requires a static IP address. Dynamic IP addresses are not supported.
Changing the static IP address of the Hosting Device after Insight RS installation is not supported
and requires reinstallation of Insight RS.
Network Address Translation (NAT) is not supported for communications between the Hosting
Device and monitored devices.
To communicate with monitored devices that use SNMP, the Hosting Device must have SNMP installed and
enabled, and the SNMP Trap Service Startup Type must be set to Automatic.
Important: iLO port sharing is not supported on a ProLiant Gen8 or later Hosting Device.
Important: ProLiant 100 Series servers, with the exception of the ProLiant G6 1x0 Series servers,
are not supported as a Hosting Device to host Insight Remote Support since they do not offer a
diagnostic agent to monitor themselves.
ProLiant 1x5 series servers are not supported as they do not have any diagnostic agent support to
monitor themselves.
(collections are enabled by default, are strongly recommended and in some cases a requirement of the contract
type). Please see the Configuration Collection capabilities section below for details.
For larger number of devices, it is recommended during installation to configure the destination folder for the
database and log files to be on different volumes to increase the performance of the application. See the
Insight Remote Support Installation and Configuration Guide at
www.hpe.com/info/insightremotesupport/docs for details.
l Optionally, if during installation or subsequently you have requested HPE or your preferred HPE Authorized
Chanel Partner to provide recommendations that may improve your environment.
Collections are gathered by Insight RS and then securely transferred to HPE. By default, they are not stored
locally on the Hosting Device. However, if you want to see the data that has been sent to HPE in order to
audit the content for privacy and security reasons, you can run an rsadmin command to enable local storage
of collections. See the Online Help for details.
If you prefer to store collections locally, dependent on the collection type, additional disk space needs to be
allocated to allow configuration collections to operate correctly. Note, all collections have a number that are
retained for historic records. Additionally, collections are compressed by a ratio of ten to one when they are
retained but consideration for disk space should be given if multiple collections are run at the same time. The
only exception is Active Health System (AHS) Collections that are not compressed. Please see "Collection
types and disk space requirements" below for details on how to calculate the required disk space.
Table 3.9 Collection types and disk space requirements

Operational collections
This collection is manual on request from HPE Support.
Important: Only 64-bit (x64) versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems are supported.
Important: Support for Microsoft Windows Server is limited to the full server version only and is not
available for the core version as much of the required functionality is unavailable in this version. This
also excludes Windows Server core versions running the Hyper-V role.
HPE recommends installing and enabling HPE Insight Management WBEM Providers on the Hosting Device
in addition to SNMP.
Important: VMware vCenter features that are not supported on a Virtual Machine based Hosting
Device include VM cloning, VM copying and Physical to Virtual (P2V) Migrations with the VMware
vCenter Converter. Supported VMware vCenter features include VMware Distributed Resource
Scheduler (DRS) and VMware High Availability (HA).
Software prerequisite
.NET Framework requirements
l Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 or later is required
This is a Windows component and can be found in the Add/Remove Features dialog in the Server Manager. If
.NET Framework 3.5 is not listed, we strongly advise that you obtain it and any patches or updates on a
regular basis from the Microsoft web site.
Access requirements
To install Insight RS, you must have administrative rights to Microsoft Windows on the Hosting Device.
Insight RS requires use of the same Windows account on the Hosting Device to install and configure Insight
RS.
Important: Due to enhanced security features in Windows 2008 and later, HPE recommends that
you run the installation as user administrator or as a user in the Administrators group.
HPE Servers
Insight RS supports monitoring and collections for the following HPE Servers.
Important: Insight RS requires administrator access to the monitored devices. Discovery and
collections require privileged access in order to retrieve information about the monitored devices.
Important: To address third-party software vulnerabilities, HPE recommends using iLO 4 2.03 or
later. To access the iLO 4 2.03 or later web interface, you must enable TLS in your browser. TLS is
the successor to Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
You can download the latest firmware from the HPE Support Center: www.hpe.com/support/ilo4.
Note: When connecting to a ProLiant Gen8 or later server through the iLO, the iLO will maintain a
connection to Insight RS even when the operating system of the server has changed or after an
update to the iLO firmware.
HPE ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers can be configured for Insight Remote Support using one of the
following three methods (for information provided by each method, see "Information provided by Agentless
Management and Insight Management Agents" on the next page):
Important: Only one configuration method should be selected; attempting to configure more than
one will result in an unsupported configuration. For instructions on how to configure Insight Remote
Support for HPE ProLiant servers, please see the HPE Insight Remote Support Monitored Devices
Configuration Guide at www.hpe.com/info/insightremotesupport/docs.
1. Register with an Insight Remote Support Hosting Device through the HPE ProLiant iLO 4 or Intelligent
Provisioning interface.
2. Discover the HPE ProLiant server iLO 4 directly from the Insight RS Console.
3. Install the appropriate diagnostic agents and then discover the HPE ProLiant server itself (not the iLO 4)
from the Insight RS Console.
This requires the installation and configuration of the appropriate HPE Insight Management (IM) Agents
or HPE Insight Management WBEM Providers on these servers. HPE recommends installing HPE
Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) 2012.06.0 (B) or higher. For details see www.hpe.com/servers/spp.
Important: If you use SNMP Agents or WBEM Providers you must still add RIBCL protocol credentials
in the Insight RS Console; RIBCL is required for AHS Collections and for Insight RS to monitor the
server.
If your device is connected through the iLO, Insight RS will detect if the iLO is registered with another remote
support application (HPE OneView, direct connect to Insight Online, or another Insight RS host). If Insight RS
detects the iLO registered to another remote support application, it will disable the server and not perform a
RIBCL, WMI, WBEM or SNMP subscription. If you are using Agents/Providers and your iLO is not visible,
check to ensure the iLO is not registered to a different remote support application.
Tip: You can use RIBCL XML scripts to register a group of servers. For more information, see the
iLO 4 Scripting and Command Line Guide at www.hpe.com/info/ilo/docs. You can also download
sample scripts for Windows and Linux.
Important: Ensure that the Agentless Management Service (AMS) is enabled, the operating
system is running and the Remote Insight Board Common Language Protocol (RIBCL) credentials
for the device are entered in the Insight RS Console before registering with Insight Remote
Support.

For more information on using the Agentless Management Service compared to operating system agents, see
the document HPE Agentless Management and the transition from OS-based agents at
h20195.www2.hpe.com/V2/getpdf.aspx/4AA6-6053ENW.pdf.
For more information on iLO 4 and Agentless Management Service (AMS), see the HPE iLO 4 User Guide
available at www.hpe.com/info/ilo/docs.
Important: If you want to monitor attached devices you need to install the HPE Service Pack for
ProLiant as detailed in the ProLiant server section that corresponds to the operating system below.
RIBCL credentials are required for all HPE ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers regardless if the
embedded capabilities or the diagnostic agent are used.
Important: When setting up the iLO 4, it is important to set the time zone. If the time zone is not
set, events sent to Insight Remote Support are displayed with a GMT offset. In iLO 4, browse to
Administration → Network → SNTP Settings to set the correct time zone.
Note: Insight RS supports iLO Shared Network Port and NIC Teaming. NIC Teaming support
requires iLO 4 firmware version 1.40 or greater.

Note: Not all ProLiant models are supported by the WBEM (WMI) providers. Refer to the provider
supported product list to determine whether your model is supported; if it is not, use SNMP. The
Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) is a software bundle that includes drivers, utilities, and
management agents for ProLiant device(s). The most current version is also available at:
www.hpe.com/info/SPP/download. See the Service Pack for ProLiant Server Support Guide at
www.hpe.com/info/spp/docs for specific server and management agent support.
Important: HPE only provides limited remote support for customers using HPE ProLiant rack
servers prior to generation 4. As with standard support, Insight Remote Support version 7.x will
attempt to discover these products as remotely monitored HPE products and send information
about failure events to HPE. However, if there are issues with the operation of the remote
monitoring features of Insight Remote Support version 7.x for these specific products, including the
remote discovery or the reporting of failure events to HPE, then HPE will resolve such issues in a
commercially reasonable manner but without guarantee of an immediate response or a resolution. If
a failure event is successfully received at HPE, it is managed according to the support level
agreement. Note that ProLiant BL servers prior to generation 4 are not limited by this restriction.
Important: HPE ProLiant 1x5 series servers are not supported as they do not have any supported
diagnostic agent.
Note: Insight RS supports iLO Shared Network Port and NIC Teaming. NIC Teaming support
requires iLO 3 firmware version 1.70 or greater.

Note: HPE BladeSystem c-Class interconnect modules (Virtual Connect, Ethernet, Fibre Channel,
InfiniBand and SAS interconnects) will automatically be monitored via the OA management module,
if it is configured for monitoring.
HPE BladeSystem c-Class Enclosures can be monitored using the embedded management capabilities in the
OA or by configuring SNMP in the OA depending on the OA firmware level:
Important: Do not attempt to use both configuration methods on the same Hosting Device. This is
not supported and monitoring will not work correctly.
l Option 1: OA firmware level 3.60 or above supports the embedded management capabilities. Register
with an Insight Remote Support Hosting Device through the OA to send service events to the Hosting
Device. If you have configured a primary and standby OA in your environment, ensure that the firmware
version for both OAs is 3.60 or higher.
Important: To address third-party software vulnerabilities, HPE recommends using OA 4.30 or later. To
access the OA 4.30 or later web interface, you must enable TLS in your browser. TLS is the successor to
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
l Option 2: All OA firmware levels support connecting to Insight RS using SNMP. Configure the SNMP
protocol to send traps to the Hosting Device. If you have configured a primary and standby OA in your
environment, discover only one of the OAs and not both.
Important: FIPS Top Secret Mode and SNMP are not compatible. If you choose to use SNMP, you must
disable FIPS Top Secret Mode.
l OA firmware level prior to 3.55 requires the use of SNMP. Embedded management is not supported.
l OA firmware level 4.01 or above supports SNMPv3.
Important: Insight RS only supports SNMPv3 traps, and does not support SNMPv3 Informs. Insight
RS listens on port 1162 for SNMPv3 traps, and your SNMPv3 passwords must be at least 8 characters
long.
Note: If using OA firmware versions 3.55 or 3.56 HPE recommends you upgrade to version 3.60.
You can download the latest firmware from the HPE Support Center: www.hpe.com/support/hpesc.

Non-HPE servers
Insight Remote Support provides remote monitoring support for select non-HPE servers with a HPE
multivendor support or HPE Integrated Support Management services contract.
Monitoring support for non-HPE servers requires special attention to server entitlement data. The serial and
product numbers that are discovered usually do not match the serial and product number listed in the HPE
support contract. For a detailed description of how to configure remote monitoring for your eligible non-HPE
servers through Insight Remote Support 7.x, please contact your HPE Account Support team to setup the
customization for your delivery.
The following selected non-HPE servers are supported:

and Insight RS have separate discovery and monitoring functions that provide complimentary management
and support capabilities. HPE OneView provides device management, while Insight RS provides remote
monitoring, automated call logging, faster problem resolution, and near-100% first-time fix accuracy. The HPE
Insight Online dashboard can be used to track service events and support cases, view device configurations,
and proactively monitor your HPE contracts and warranties for devices monitored by Insight RS.
Insight RS and OneView coexist in your environment, but must be installed on separate host servers.
Important: When using Insight Online, each HPE Passport ID can support a maximum of 1,500
devices. Make sure the sum total of monitored devices does not exceed 1,500 devices, even when
the HPE Passport ID is used across multiple Insight RS clients. Additionally, during unusually large
demands on Insight Online, you may see performance lags with HPE Passport IDs that support
more than 1,200 devices across multiple Insight RS clients.
Important: When you disable your connection to Insight Online or change to a different HPE
Passport account, the change takes time to be reflected in Insight Online. Wait until all of your
devices have been removed from your current Insight Online account before connecting to a new
account.
Suggested action: Delete or disable the devices that you don't want Insight RS to monitor.
Suggested action: Contact HPE Support to determine which partner location ID is active in Insight Online/Insight
RS. Case information will be sent to the service provider listed in Insight RS for the customer.
The Insight Online My Customer system will display the correct data for the partner if the
partner uses the login verified by HPE Support.
Suggested action: To work around this issue, any of the following actions enable you to log on as an
Administrator:
l Turn off User Account Control (UAC) on the Hosting Device
l Add your user account to a local Administrators group on the Hosting Device. For
example, add MYDOMAIN\myusername to the local HostingDevice\Administrators
group
l Add your user account directly to the domain Administrators group. For example, add
MYDOMAIN\myusername to the MYDOMAIN\Administrators group directly.
l Create a new local Administrators account and use that to log on to the Hosting Device.
For example, create an Administrative account named HostingDevice\AdminAccount
and log on with that.
8. If you want to view the recovery log file, once the repair operation completes, open a Windows Explorer
window and enter %HP_RS_LOG% in the address bar. Sort the files by date modified, and you should see
the recovery log file near the top.
9. Delete the following to clean up disk space:
a. The original hprs_recovery.log file from %HP_RS_LOG%
b. The entire directory where you unpacked the .exe in step 4.
The recovery operation is complete.
