What is the hormonal system?
Your hormonal system is made up of a variety of organs called glands.
The glands, which are found all over your body, produce and release
hormones.

Hormones are chemicals that coordinate the different functions of your

body by conveying signals through your blood to your organs, skin,
muscles and other tissues. These signals will tell your body what to do
and when to do it.

How does it work?

Hormones transmit their signals by locking them into the cells they
target so that they can relay the message. Your hormonal system
constantly controls the amount of hormones in your blood.

The pituitary gland senses as hormone levels increase and signals other
glands to stop producing and releasing hormones. When hormone levels
dip below a specific point, the pituitary gland can instruct other glands to
supply and release more. This process is titled homeostasis.

5 Functions of the hormonal system

Metabolism - The main role of thyroid in the hormonal system is to

control your metabolism, which is the ability of your body to break
down food and turn it to energy.

Growth and development - Human Growth Hormone (GH) is a

substance that regulates the growth of the body. GH is a pituitary gland,
found at the base of the brain. GH helps children grow taller, increases
muscle mass, and reduces body fat.

Emotions and mood - The hormonal system interacts with the nervous
system to control many aspects of human behavior that play a crucial
role in emotions.

Blood pressure - Renin regulates the development of two additional

hormones, angiotensin and aldosterone. And these hormones control the
width of your arteries, and how much water and salt you pass out of your
body. Both of these have an effect on blood pressure.

Sleep - A number of hormones, including melatonin, cortisol, thyroid

stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin (PRL), differ during the day
and are highly regulated by circadian and sleep-wake cycles.
