1 INTERJET A320 i2000 IFE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1.1 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

The interjet A320 aircraft are configured in a single class, with the Thales i2000 system installed
throughout the aircraft, providing overhead video and broadcast audio entertainment to all passengers.
The overhead video system uses the RF distribution network and retractable video display units to present
the Thales In-Route Moving Map™, safety and other video announcements, the latest news and other
broadcast video to the passengers. At the seat, each passenger may chose between multiple broadcast
audio selections or may select the audio track associated with the overhead video presentation. Each seat
is equipped with a dual prong stereo jack that accepts an electrical headset. The system block diagram is
depicted in Figure 1-1. Power to the system is supplied through the forward circuit breaker panel
(2000VU) and is depicted in Figure 1-2.

The system provides the following functionalities:

• System Control / Operator Interface

• In-seat broadcast audio
• Degraded Mode
• Overhead broadcast video
• Moving Map (MMAP) broadcast
• *Boarding Music Machine (BMM) storage
• *Pre-Recorded Announcement Message (PRAM) storage
• Video Announcements (VA)
• System response to Passenger Announcements (PA)
• Automatic system response to decompression
• Maintenance Functions
• Entertainment content file loading
• Daily news update content loading

* The Boarding Music and Pre-Recorded Messages hosted on the iseries server are controlled from the Forward/Flight
Attendant Panel (FAP).

The flight attendant and maintenance interface is accomplished via an Interactive Cabin Management
Terminal (iCMT) located in the Video Control Center (VCC).

Cabin attendants are able to control the system functions through the iCMT located at the VCC.

Maintenance personnel are able to view individual LRU hardware and software configurations from the
iCMT and to load both software and entertainment content at the VCC.

1.2 DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

1.2.1 Headend

Headend units consist of the Digital Server Unit (DSU-AM6-12) and the Audio Video Controller
(AVC). Both units are installed in the IFE Center (IFEC) located in the E-Bay.

The DSU-AM6-12 provides Audio and Video signals derived from digital content stored on the
units hard disc drive. The content is RF modulated into six video and 12 audio channels for
distribution throughout the cabin. The DSU also serves as the system software repository.

The AVC is the IFE system interface unit to aircraft systems, and provides audio/video
modulation and control for external analog sources, Tapping Unit control, and system
communications. The AVC also serves as the system mode information repository.

1.2.2 Cabin Distribution

Both the in-seat audio and overhead video programs are distributed throughout the cabin via the
RF network. After originating the broadcast RF signal, the DSU routs the signal to the AVC,
where it is summed with any external inputs then split into three separate RF outputs. The three
RF outputs of the AVC are routed to ADB 1 for distribution to the seats, TU 1 for distribution to
the left hand column of Tapping Units, and TU 2 for distribution to the right hand column of
Tapping Units.

Ethernet communication from the Headend to the seats is via the AVC through the ADB to each
seat. Each ADB provides connection to four strings of seat groups through Wall Disconnect
Boxes (WDBs). A string will contain no more than nine Seat Electronics Boxes (SEBs).

Figure 1-4 is a block diagram of RF and Data distribution from the Headend to the WDBs for the
Interjet A320.

1.2.3 Overhead Video

In addition to the broadcast RF signal, the AVC provides RS-485 control signals to each column
of Tapping Units, which in turn provide power, control, and NTSC video to the 8.4-inch overhead
retract monitors.

Figure 1-5 is the Interjet A320 LOPA (Layout of Passenger Accommodations) depicting
passenger seating and equipment locations. The LOPA also shows the TU to Retract Monitor
relationship.

1.2.4 Power Distribution to the Seats

Power for each seat column originates at the MCU. Each of the MCU’s three-phase AC outputs is
routed to a Power Wall Disconnect Box (PWDB), where the power is split and distributed to a
forward and aft seat column. While each SEB operates from a single phase, three-phase power is
distributed along the seat column. The seat-to-seat power distribution cable rotates the phase to
ensure phase balance along the column.

Figure 1-3 shows power distribution to the seats.

1.3 SYSTEM DATABASE

1.3.1 Data and RF

The system database describes actual Interjet connections. Figure 1-7 shows the system RF and
Ethernet connections in a block diagram format. Table 1-2 depicts the same information in table
format. Understanding the database connections is an important tool used for troubleshooting the
system. Note that the same WDB is used on both the right and left hand sides of the airplane. This
means the output connectors, J2 and J3 will feed in opposite directions depending upon which
side the WDB is installed on. This can cause some confusion when analyzing the IP Sequence
Report where J2 is always designated as the “FWD” direction and J3 is always designated as the
“AFT” direction. Figure 1-6 illustrates this relationship.

RH Side LH Side IP Seq Report

J2 Feeds Fwd Feeds Aft “FWD”
J3 Feeds Aft Feeds Fwd “AFT”

FIGURE 1-6 WDB - FWD / AFT FEED

Also note that figure 1-7 the database block diagram as well as Table 1-3 depict the actual ADB
connector designation (J3 – J6 and J8) while the IP Sequence Report refers to ADB Column
Numbers. Table 1-2 below provides a cross reference.

1.3.2 Power

It is important to note that the power distribution on the Interjet A320 aircraft does not match the
Data/RF database. Figure 1-8 shows seat power distribution in a block diagram format.

1.3.3 Overhead Video Mapping

The first Tapping Unit in each column (TU 1, LH & TU 2, RH) receive RF and RS-485 data
signals from the AVC located in the IFEC. These signals, as well as 115 VAC power are daisy
chained to the remaining TUs in each column. The 115 VAC power to downstream TUs is not
fused to ensure a blown fuse does not disable an entire column. Table 1-4 depicts Tapping Unit
relationships.

TUs provide fused 115 VAC power, monitor control, and NTSC video to their associated
monitor(s). Tapping Unit to Monitor relationship is depicted in Table 1-5.
