What is PPE?

Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is

equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious
workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result
from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical,
mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal protective equipment
may include items such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or
muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.

What can be done to ensure proper use of personal protective equipment?

All personal protective equipment should be safely designed and

constructed, and should be maintained in a clean and reliable fashion. It
should fit comfortably, encouraging worker use. If the personal protective
equipment does not fit properly, it can make the difference between
being safely covered or dangerously exposed. When engineering, work
practice, and administrative controls are not feasible or do not provide
sufficient protection, employers must provide personal protective
equipment to their workers and ensure its proper use. Employers are also
required to train each worker required to use personal protective
equipment.

Construction and High-Rise Construction

Construction and building renovation sites are active and are work
areas that offer safety challenges. In an effort to provide a safe working
environment on any construction or building renovation site, it is
recommended that employees are not allowed entry unless PPE is worn at
all times.

Some PPE needed for High-Rise Construction are as follows:

Safety Glasses- Safety goggles are intended to shield the wearer's eyes
from impact hazards such as flying fragments, objects, large chips, and
particles. Goggles fit the face immediately surrounding the eyes and form
a protective seal around the eyes. This prevents objects from entering
under or around the goggles.

Safety Vest- A safety vest is an article of personal protective equipment

that's designed to have high visibility and reflectivity. It is usually worn by
cyclists, motor cyclists, traffic police and workers engaged in
construction, road work, rail work and those working in ports, airports,

Page 3
yards, hangers, fire, rescue, emergency services and utility jobs where
bad weather or low visibility may be an issue. A safety vest wearer is
easily detected, which can help other parties avoid colliding with the
individual.

Helmets- A hard hat is a type of helmet predominantly used in workplace

environments such as industrial or construction sites to protect the head
from injury due to falling objects, impact with other objects, debris,
rain, and electric shock

Page 4
Safety Gloves- A safety glove is designed to keep you safe from hazards
including cuts, chemical burns, abrasion, crushing or contact with bio-
hazards. Safety glove is really just another name for work glove. But
choosing the right style of gloves is what really matters.

Safety Boots- A steel-toe boot also known as a safety boots is a durable

boot or shoe that has a protective reinforcement in the toe which

Page 5
protects the foot from falling objects or compression. Although
traditionally made of steel, the reinforcement can also be made of a
composite material, a plastic such as thermoplastic polyurethane or even
aluminum.

Safety Harness- A safety harness is a form of protective equipment

designed to protect a person or object from injury or damage. The
harness is an attachment between a stationary and non-stationary object
and is usually fabricated from rope, cable or webbing and locking
hardware. A fall protection safety harness is a piece of equipment
designed to keep you safe and secure when working high, so you don't
end up flying off the top of a building or other tall structure you're
working on.

Page 6
Safety Earmuffs- Earmuffs are a type of personal protective equipment
(PPE) that is used to protect the wearer's ears from excessive noise
pollution, dust or temperature variations, especially cold. ... These cups
are usually attached on the outer-ends of a steel or plastic headband to
fit over top of the ears and cover them tightly

Page 7
Electrical

Depending on the job task to be performed, PPE for the electrical

industry generally includes safety glasses, face shields, hard hats,
insulated safety shoes, insulating (rubber) gloves with leather protectors,
insulating sleeves, and flame-resistant (FR) clothing. In addition to PPE,
electrical workers often use Insulating Protective Equipment (IPE), such
as line hoses, rubber hoods, rubber blankets, and insulating live-line tools
as needed for protection. Some of the required PPE are as follows:

Shock Proof Helmet- Hard hats are required when working in areas where
there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects. In
addition, hard hats designed to reduce electrical shock are required when
working near exposed electrical conductors that may contact the head.

Specialty types of hard hats include those with miner's light attachments,
reflective stripe for night work, face shields for welders, and attachments
for visors or earmuffs.

Page 8
Protector Gloves- Various styles of liners are offered by glove
manufacturers. Leather protector gloves should be worn over electrical
insulating gloves to provide needed mechanical protection against
abrasion or cuts. Even a small puncture in an electrical insulating glove
will allow electrical current to reach the hand.

Dielectric Footwear- Dielectric boots are used where there is a risk of

electric shock from high voltages. Without the the correct PPE a high
voltage electric current can stop the heart or produce fatal burns.

Page 9
Insulated Blanket- The Lineman's Rubber Electrical Insulating Blanket is
made from natural rubber, which affords excellent flexibility and
usability. This is an ideal product for use in low-ozone environments. The
Class 2 Lineman's Rubber Electrical Insulating Blanket is rated for a
maximum voltage use of 17,000 volts of A-C.

Page 10
Flame Resistance Coveralls- Flame-resistant and arc flash coveralls cover
the torso, legs, and arms to help wearers avoid burns when working in
areas with sparks, open flames, and other fire hazards. Also called FR
coveralls, flame-resistant coveralls are made of materials that resist
burning or melting. Arc flash coveralls protect wearers from high heat
and burns when working with or near electrical equipment where electric
arcs may heat surrounding air to extreme levels. These safety coveralls
are worn over the users' work clothing and provide thermal insulation to
keep wearers comfortable.

Page 11
Chemical

Chemical PPE can protect you against chemical and physical hazardous
exposure. In some cases, eye protection, gloves, maximum skin coverage
and closed toe shoes are necessary. Aprons, respirators, splash shields,
ear plugs and specialized gloves may be recommended or required
depending on the field of hazard. Standard lab PPE includes a lab coat,
safety glasses, and gloves such as powder-free SafeSkin or NeoPro, and
closed shoes. Due to possible chemical exposure to legs, all workers
handling hazardous materials should wear pants or the equivalent.

Lab Coat- a lab coat is a barrier that protects you from the chemicals you
work with. Your lab coat makes sure your street clothes and body are
protected from spills, splashes, drops, and even unanticipated reactions.
It is a barrier that keeps you from being exposed to accidents in the lab
and, in some cases, might save you from injury or even save your life.

Page 12
Safety Glasses- Safety Goggles: Primary protectors intended to shield the
eyes against liquid or chemical splash, irritating mists, vapors, and fumes.
Goggles must be the chemical splash type with indirect vents and NOT
the direct-vented impact goggles. Face shields shall be worn over the top
of splash goggles. Employees should have their own pair of safety glasses
as a minimum. The glasses should fit and the lenses should not be
scratched or clouded.

Gloves- Wear gloves when handling hazardous materials, chemicals of

unknown toxicity, corrosive materials, rough or sharp-edged objects, and
very hot or very cold materials. Disposable nitrile or neoprene gloves are
usually appropriate as protection from incidental splashes or contact with
lab chemicals. Thin, disposable, nitrile gloves are the most common
gloves used when handling chemicals in laboratories; however, it is
important to remember that thin nitrile rubber provides only limited
chemical protection.

Respirator- A respirator is a device designed to protect the wearer from

inhaling hazardous atmospheres, including fumes, vapours, gases and
particulate matter such as dusts and airborne microorganisms.

Page 13
Chemical Resistant Boots- Selecting the right waterproof footwear for
your specific work environment is dependent upon the Chemical
Resistance the materials used in producing the boot. A boot material that
is not resistant to the particular chemicals or fluids you are working in
will fail to hold up and could cause a danger to you and your employees.
For example, rubber boots are very resistant to fertilizers, ammonia
anhydrous, alcohols, milk, wet concrete and animal waste but are not
resistant to chicken fats and oils and the boots will fall apart in a chicken
processing plant. PVC or TPU materials would work much better in a work
environment with animal fats.

Airborne

Airborne Personal Protective Equipment are used when you have a lung or
throat infection or virus, such as chicken pox or Covid 19, which can be
spread via tiny droplets in the air from your mouth or nose, Or when
dealing with infected people

Face Shields- These shields extend from the eyebrows to below the chin
and across the width of the employee’s head. Face shields protect
against potential splashes or sprays of hazardous liquids. When worn for
protection against UV, must be specifically designed to protect the face
and eyes from hazardous radiation.
When used for chemical protection or UV protection, must comply with
ANSI standard Z87.1.

Goggles- Dust goggles, sometimes called direct ventilated goggles, are

tight fitting eye protection designed to resist the passage of large
particles into the goggles.
Must comply with ANSI standard Z87.1

Chemical Splash Googles are tight fitting eye protection that completely
covers the eyes, eye sockets and facial area surrounding the eyes.

Page 14

ANSI standard Z87.1

Respirator- A respirator is a device designed to protect the wearer from

inhaling hazardous atmospheres, including fumes, vapours, gases and
particulate matter such as dusts and airborne microorganisms.

Biohazard

Biohazard’s main protective equipment includes respirators, eye

protection, hearing protection and protective clothing. Depending on the
hazard, the recommendations on the use of PPE change. Some examples
of PPE may include Gas masks, gloves, overalls, boots, and googles.

Gas Masks- A gas mask is a mask used to protect the wearer from inhaling
airborne pollutants and toxic gases. The mask forms a sealed cover over
the nose and mouth, but may also cover the eyes and other vulnerable
soft tissues of the face. Most gas masks are also respirators, The gas mask
only protects the user from digesting, inhaling and contact through the
eyes (many agents affect through eye contact). Most combined gas mask
filters will last around 8 hours in a nuclear biological chemical (NBC)
situation. Chemical specific filters can last up to 20 hours in an NBC
situation.

Airborne toxic materials may be gaseous (for example, mustard gas and
chlorine gas) or particulates (such as biological agents). Many filters
include protection from both types.

Biohazard Coveralls- A hazmat suit is a piece of personal protective

equipment that consists of an impermeable whole-body garment worn as

Page 15
protection against hazardous materials. Such suits are often combined
with self-contained breathing apparatus to ensure a supply of breathable
air.

Biohazard Gloves- Chemical/Liquid-Resistant Gloves: Several types of

gloves help protect against specific chemicals and other liquids, such as
blood or biohazardous wastes. Many of these gloves are disposable, which
is necessary to prevent cross-contamination with various substances.

Biohazard Boots- While on the job, it’s important to wear a protective

pair of hazmat rubber boots, overboots or shoe covers to keep your feet
safe and shielded from potentially hazardous materials. Enviro Safety
Products offers many types of footwear to get any hazmat job done the
secure way.

Plumbing

Plumbing is any system that conveys fluids for a wide range of

applications. Plumbing uses pipes, valves, plumbing fixtures, tanks, and
other apparatuses to convey fluids. PPE considerations for plumbers
should include boots, gloves and wraparound eye protection as a
minimum, along with ear protection when using power tools.

Safety Goggles- Goggles, or safety glasses, are forms of protective

eyewear that usually enclose or protect the area surrounding the eye in
order to prevent particulates, water or chemicals from striking the eyes.

Helmet- A hard hat is a type of helmet predominantly used in workplace

environments such as industrial or construction sites to protect the head
from injury due to falling objects, impact with other objects, debris,
rain, and electric shock.

Page 16
Gloves- Drain cleaning gloves can be made from leather, PVC (Rubber), or
synthetic materials, and are the most commonly used type of glove
among plumbers. They offer added protection against the cuts and
abrasions that commonly occur when handling a metal drain snake, as
well as protection from the sewage and other bodily fluids that follows
the snake up. Leather-based or synthetic gloves should be utilized
whenever the job calls for physical labor, for increased grip and
protection.

Respirator- A disposable N95 mask is a safety device that covers the nose
and mouth and helps protect the wearer from breathing in some
hazardous substances.

Ear Muffs- Earmuffs are clothing accessories or PPE designed to cover a

person's ears for hearing protection or for warmth. They consist of a
thermoplastic or metal head-band, that fits over the top or back of the
head, and a cushion or cup at each end, to cover the external ears.
