Unit4:CounselingServices:Clientele,Settings,Tools,andProcesses
ForIndividuals
In the field of mental health, there is an empirically supported notion
that
the
counseling
and therapy process, including assessment, treatment, and follow-up, should be
individualized. This would mean that counselors should tailor-fit all their
counseling
plans
based on the client’s
issue
and
background.
Even
when
two
clients
are
diagnosed
with
the
same condition, they must still be given different treatment plans because they are two
distinctpeoplewhofunctionandadaptindifferentways.
As such, a counselor should conduct a needs assessment. It is ideal that the same
counselor conducts the intake and assessment, plans and facilitates the treatment, and
continues the follow-up. The counselor can determine the client’s needs based on the
following:
● historyoftheclient’spresentcondition
● resultsofcounselingassessmentandevaluation
● in-depthinterviewwiththeclientandpeoplewhointeractwiththem
● referralfromanotherprofessionaloraninstitution
ForGroups
At the core of identifying needs for groups and communities is a process called needs
assessment. According to the American Counseling Association, it is an evaluative and
objective
process
of
data
gathering
and
interpretation
that
focuses
on
determining
specific
programs and services for clients. In facilitating a needs assessment among groups, a
counselormustfollowamethodwithfourdistinctsteps:
● Identifyingguidingquestionsandgoals(goalsetting)
In this stage, counselors work with clients to understand group culture, challenges
and issues, strengths, and dynamics—all of which would eventually help in
formulatingspecificgoalsandquestions.
● Identifyingpopulationstobeassessed(grouping)
From a larger group, the counselor will now determine a specific subgroup who
would
participate
in
the
needs
assessment.
For
example,
in
an
organizational
setting,

a counselor may decide to facilitate a needs assessment

● Collectingneedsassessmentdata(assessment)
When
a specific
subset
has
been
selected,
the
counselor
will
then
facilitate
the
actual
needs assessment among its members.
The
process
may
be
done
individually
or
in
smallgroups.
● Analyzingandinterpretingdata(analysis)
The counselor compiles the results of the needs assessment and processes them
using relevant statistical and analytical tools. The devised counseling plan will
dependontheresultsofthisneedsassessment.

Unit4:CounselingServices:Clientele,Settings,Tools,andProcesses
ForCommunities
Needs assessment is also used
among
communities.
One
main
difference
in
this
setting
is
that community leaders usually participate in the needs assessment instead of individual
community
members.
This
is
because
several
logistical
challenges
may
arise
when
the
latter
is included in the needs assessment process. In addition, it may be assumed that the
community leaders are aware of the community’s specific needs. It is also important to
remember that community needs differ from the group and individual needs because a
community is made up of a larger population. As such, counselors may not be able to
customize the counseling program for
each
community
member.
However,
the
counseling
processcanstillbetailor-fittedtothecommunitynormsandculture.
