Signed Numbers Addition and Subtraction Rules

When adding two numbers with the same signs:

Add their absolute values and write the sum with the sign of the
numbers.

When adding two numbers with different signs:

Subtract their absolute values and write the difference with the
sign of the number having the larger absolute value.

Solve: -8 + 12

When the signs are different reorder the problem to make it

appear as subtraction.

-8 + 12 = 12 – 8 = 4

Answer: 4

You can subtract a number by adding the number’s opposite.
