School Name: NOTRE DAME OF JARO INC.

Teacher’s Name: MR. MARK JAY S. LEGO

Subject Area: DRRR
TEACHING GUIDE
QUARTER NUMBER: 2nd SEMESTER
SUBJECT MATTER: GEOLOGICAL HAZARD
TOPIC / LESSON NAME
BASIC CONCEPT OF DISASTER AND DISASTER RISK
The learners demonstrate understanding of…
Potential earthquake hazards:
CONTENT STANDARDS 1. Ground shaking
2. Ground rupture
3. Liquefaction
4. Earthquake-induced ground subsidence
5. Tsunami
6. Earthquake-induced landslide

CULMINATING PERFORMANCE STANDARDS The learners develop a family emergency preparedness plan to guide them on what to
do before, during, and after a volcanic

PERFORMANCE TASK The learners relate the concept of disaster with daily life.
LEARNING COMPETENCIES The learners…
1. Identify various potential earthquake hazards;
2. Recognize the natural signs of an impending tsunami;
3. Analyze the effects of the different earthquake hazards;
4. Interpret different earthquake hazard maps; and
5. Apply precautionary and safety measures before, during, and after an earthquake.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. Define what is earthquake?
2. Explain how earthquake happen
3. Explain what are the things that we need to survived BEFORE, DURING
and AFTER the earthquake
TIME ALLOTMENT 1 day
LESSON OUTLINE:
1. Introduction/Review: Gist of the activity (5 minutes)
2. Motivation: Gist of the activity (5 minutes)
3. Instruction/Delivery: Gist of the activity (10 minutes)
4. Practice: Gist of the activity (15 minutes)
5. Enrichment: Gist of the activity (15 minutes)
6. Evaluation: Gist of the activity (10 minutes)

MATERIALS Pictures, lap-top, and TV

Building resilient communities (disaster readiness and risk

RESOURCES reduction)

PROCEDURE MEETING THE LEARNERS’ NEEDS

Introduction/Review: 5 min. Teacher Tip:
The teacher will ask somebody to have a little bet recap on what we have done last 1. Common misconceptions, mistakes, and questions
meeting. 2. Tips for assessment
3. Alternative ways of delivering content
Motivation: 4. How to differentiate learners (disabilities, fast/slow learners, language
The teacher will show a different pictures about the topic and let the students discover barriers, etc.)
what the picture all about. 5. Potential integration with other subjects

INSTRUCTION/DELIVERY
 The teacher will state the objective of the day.
PRACTICE
The teacher will ask questions to the students.
 Based on your experience in earthquake before what is typhoon?
 How are we going to describe earthquake?
 What is the impact of earthquake in our community?

ACTIVITY
 The lesson starts with an activity entitled ‘’ TELL ME WHAT, TELL ME HOW which aims to determine the students’ knowledge and understanding on earthquake.
 The teacher will divide the class into four small groups and gives the following instruction:
1. The first group will define ‘’earthquake’’ explain its classifications, and its impact on lives and properties.
2. The second group will list all the survival tips before earthquake.
3. The third group will list all the things that can be done during earthquake.
4. The fourth group will list the things that they have to do after a earthquake.

ENRICHMENT
-The teacher will instruct the students to write their answers on a cartolina, pin the cartolina on the board and ask a student representative to share their output in
class. After each presentation, student will volunteers and teacher will give their impressions/critique on the sharing/report.
- The teacher will discuss the concept.
A geologic hazard is an extreme natural events in the crust of the earth that pose a threat to life and property, for example, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis (tidal
waves) and landslides
Why do earthquakes occur?

eEarthquake
f = Vibration of the Earth produced by the rapid release of energy

p o of initial slip on the fault; where the earthquake origins
Seismic waves = Energy moving outward from the focus of an earthquake
Focus= location

i c
Epicenter= spot on Earth’s surface directly above the focus

c u EVALUATION: identify the parts of the earthquake and try to explain each part. (5 pts. Each)
