Let’s proceed to the second region in the Philippines which is Cagayan Valley.

Using our philippine map, we can locate Region 2 in this part, let’s take a look at the picture. As
you can see, we can identify Cagayan Valley in the northeastern section of Luzon.

The Ybanags, the dominant ethnic group, are known for being the tallest ethnolinguistic group in
the entire Philippines.

What is ethnolinguistic?

A branch of linguistics known as ethnolinguistics examines how language and culture interact as
well as how various ethnic groups view the outside world.

Back to the previous slide pls.

They are famous for their expertise in seacraft design like boats and blacksmithing.o
pagpapanday.

Isa sa mga physical characteristic na distinct sa kanilang grupo ay ang pagkakaron ng dark
elbows. Sinasabi kasi na ang kulay ng kanilang siko ay mas maitim kumpara sa ibang mga
Pilipino.

We have the Itawit, The Itawits are more acknowledged for their skills in pottery creation and
basket weaving. The majority of itawes settlements may be located in Cagayan towns near the
lower Chico and Matalag Rivers.

Yan ang dahilan kung bakit itawit ang kanilang pangalan. Ang Itawes ay nagmula sa mga
salitang I at tawid na nangangahulugang "mga tao sa kabila ng ilog".

Next on the list we have, Malawegs.

Physically, we can differentiate them by them having also a dark complexion, medium height,
with a big body built.

They also practice the old custom of marriage and courtship.

The agricultural ability of the Malawegs is well-known; they specialize in lowland rice and corn
production.

Furthermore, we have Yogad.

Their build is like an Indonesian type. Their skin tones range from reddish to dark brown, and
they have straight black hair and dark brown eyes. They reside in homes with bamboo-like
wood construction and a leaf roof. The women dress in lace bras and skirts, while the men wear
shirts and pants. The Yogads like both dance and music. And they are recognized as an
agricultural community.

Next we have Gaddang

From the word itself, ga means heat and ddang means burned. It was derived due to their dark
skin complexion. The Gaddang are distinctive among the people in northern Luzon for their
extravagant use of beading. Sometimes, if we take a look at the market, red textiles with beads
are probably made by Gaddang.

Why do you think Indigenous people are so interested in beadwork?

On the list, we have Bugkalot

Indigenous peoples known as the Bugkalot/Ilongot were also recognized for their love of the
arts, the natural world, and their own culture. In addition to headhunting, Bugkalot men enjoy
hunting and fishing for sustenance, while women are in charge of cultivating plants.

We have Ikalahan..

These Ikalahans are original inhabitants of the land who rely on the forest for food and building
supplies for their homes. The Ikalahans are the first tribe that the Philippine government has
acknowledged as partners in the management of a forest reserve.

Lastly, we have the most endangered indigenous group in Cagayan valley due to their
decreasing population, Isinai
Today, the Isinay still live around the old town centers, but their houses have changed. Most of
them now live in single houses. The Isinay were considered the best weavers of the uwes
pinutuan, used as a funerary blanket or shroud in the Cordillera region. Like the Isinay language
that is endangered, the traditional art of uwes pinutuan weaving has been lost. That’s the reason
why their group is endangered.

Lastly to end my discussion,
How can we save indigenous groups from extinction?
