Candles have come a long way

since their initial use. They continue
to increase in popularity and use,
despite the fact that they are no
longer used as a primary source of
light. In the present, they symbolize
a celebration, kindle passion, calm
the senses, commemorate a
ceremony, and enhance house
decors. It creates a warm and
pleasant glow for everyone to enjoy.

One popular wax used in candle making is soy or soybean wax. Soybeans are used
to make soybean wax. It's a vegetable wax that's 100% pure and natural. This wax is
not only non-toxic, but is a renewable resource that is particularly ecologically
beneficial. It is one of the most pleasurable waxes to work with is soy wax because it
comes in pellet or flake form. This form makes things so much easier, from weighing
the wax out to cleaning it afterwards. Soy wax candles burn very cleanly. Not only is
there a reduction in soot, but due to the makeup of soy itself, the burn time of a soy
wax candle increases. This is because soy wax candles burn slower and cooler; in
contrast to paraffin.

Fun fact: Paraffin is one the most commercially used type of wax because it is
inexpensive. But it is not a very eco-friendly type of wax since it is from a byproduct of
petroleum oil, non-renewable resources, and emits black soot.

Why Should You Make Your Own Candles?

1. You can let your creativity run wild.

2. Know what goes into your candles.
3. Choosing your own fragrances.
4. They are fun and easy to make!
5. Business opportunity.

Essential oils are most commonly used in the practice

of aromatherapy, in which they are inhaled through
various methods. Inhaling the aromas from essential
oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which
is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions,
behaviors, sense of smell, and long-term memory.
Interestingly, the limbic system is heavily involved in
forming memories. This can partly explain why familiar smells can trigger memories or
emotions. The limbic system also plays a role in controlling several unconscious
physiological functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. As such,
some people claim that essential oils can exert a physical effect on their body.

Safety Precautions for Soy Candle Making

Always have a fire extinguisher within reach. Review the instructions on

the fire extinguisher to familiarize yourself with proper operation. Hopefully you will
never need to use it, but if you do need it, you will not have time to read the instructions.
For small wax fires, you may use something such as a pot lid to smother the fire. Never
use water to extinguish a wax fire. Liquid wax behaves much the same way as oil, and
therefore needs to be treated like an oil fire.
Never leave melting wax unattended. It may seem to take a long time to get
the wax to go from solid to liquid but make it a habit to constantly monitor your wax to
avoid accident. If you ever must leave the room, remove wax from heat.
Always use a double boiler. A double boiler helps distribute heat and
prevents dangerous temperatures. Never melt wax directly on your stove or use oven.
Also, always make sure to not let the double boiler run dry.
Remember that essential and/or fragrance oils are highly
concentrated. A little goes a long way. Just a drop or two of most essential and/ or
fragrance oil will be more than enough to produce the desired effect.
Do not pour hot wax down the drain, because it could form a stubborn
clog in the pipes. If in any case you have excess wax, you can store it to use for later
projects.
Make sure to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when making
candles. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing that might touch hot burners. An apron can
be worn to protect from hot wax spills and clothing stains. Minor burns should he
treated with cold running water. Use an oven mitt when handling hot pots and other
candle making equipment.
Never leave lit candles unattended. Keep lit candles a safe distance from any
materials that may burn, such as furniture and books or curtains and bedding. Place
candle on a level surface. Extinguishing all candles before leaving the house or going
to bed.

HOW TO COMPUTE THE CHEMICAL QUANTITY NEEDED FOR YOUR PRODUCT

As a general rule in making any cosmetics or homecare products, all should be weighed
uniformly (all in grams or oz) regardless if it is in solid or liquid state and should be
totaled to 100%.

• With the help of the table above, you can compute the quantity needed per ingredient (B), cost per
ingredient (D) and total capital of the whole batch (Z). Furthermore, you can make a trial 10g or
scale up to 1,000 kilos or more given that percentage(A) and price per kilo(C) is provided. In this
example, we assume that we make a 500g product (X).
• Ingredients can be more than five (5) and is provided in the module.
• Percentage (A) is given in the formula. Please refer to your module.
• Quantity (B) is the quantity ingredient needed per chemical. We use 500g product (X). Multiply 500g
(X) to Percentage (A).
• Price per kg (C) is variable. (Note that 1000g = 1000ml = 1kg = 1liter)
• To get the Cost per Ingredient (D), you need to divide Price (C) to 1000 (this is constant because
1kg is equal to 1000g) then multiply to Quantity (B).

How to compute the quantity of each raw material or ingredient in your

product?

For this example, we will use the Apple Fragrance Oil and assume 500 grams of
product to be produced.

The Quantity of Fragrance Oil

Quantity (B) = “Quantity of product to be produced” x “Percentage”

Quantity (B) = 500 x 2.00%

Quantity (B) = 10 grams

You will need 10 grams of Apple Fragrance Oil for 500 grams of Apple Pie Ala Mode
Soy Candle.

The Amount (in currency) Needed for Apple Fragrance Oil

= Price per kilo / 1000 (constant) X "Quantity of Product to be

Total Amount (D)

Total Amount (D) = ₱2,000 ÷ 1,000 x 10 grams

Total Amount (D) = ₱20.00

It will cost you ₱20.00 for 10 grams of Apple Fragrance Oil

Setting-up your Workstation

• In your working area, remove small appliances, utensil holders, and other items

from the work area so they won’t accidentally be splashed with melted wax.

• Spread newspapers across countertops in the work area to a thickness of three

or four pages. Make sure all surfaces nearby are covered completely.

• Gather all ingredients, tools, container needed for the project and place them

on the countertop or working area.

• Prepare and measure accurately all your ingredients for soy candle making.

Digital Scale is the most accurate to measure your ingredients.

SDP Soy Candle Guide Quantity

Ingredients Function Percentage 100g 500g 1000g

Soy Wax Wax 95.00% 95 475 950

Fragrance or Essential Oil Scent 5.00% 5 25 50

Candle Dye Colorant q.s. q.s. q.s. q.s.

*Q.S. or Quantum Statis = No maximum numeric level. Add as much of this ingredient as is needed to
achieve the desired result.

Procedure:

1. Check if your wick and container are all dry and clean. Dirt and water will

adversely affect the quality of the finished candle. Wipe away dirt and moisture

from the containers (or mold) with a clean, dry cloth. Make sure your containers it

is not chipped, cracked, or damaged in any way.

2. You can start melting your wax. When melting any wax type, the double boiler

process is advised.
Soy Candle Making Skincare DIY Point | 13

3. While waiting for your wax to melt, measure your wick using the glass container

as a guide, cut 2 inches longer than the height of the container.

4. Once soy wax has melted. Prepare to prime-coat your wick. Grab your measured

wick and slowly submerge it in the hot wax for 30 seconds. Leave about an inch

of wick above the surface of the wax so your fingers do not touch hot wax. After it

has cooled, gently run your thumb and forefinger down the length of the wax

covered wick to straighten any bends, curves, or kinks. The section of the

unprimed end of the wick will be attached to the wick tab to help anchor the wick.

You can also use pre-primed wick with attached wick tab from your supplier.

5. Add candle dye and mix fully (optional). Do not over stir.

6. Make sure all the soy wax and candle dye has melted before removing from the

heat. Do not over stir.

7. Cool down your melted wax before adding essential and/or fragrance oil.

8. While waiting to cool down melted wax, prepare your candle container.

How to prepare: using your hot glue gun (or glue, tape, molds, etc), secure and

center your wicks to the bottom of your candle container. Make sure it is

centered. Now, loop the end of the wick around your candle wick holder. You can

use popsicle, tape, pencil or candle wick centering tool.

9. Once cooled down, add scent & mix fully. Do not over stir.

Tip: Dip a tissue into your melted wax, it dries within 8-10 seconds then the wax

is warm enough for your scent.

10. Pour slowly the wax into your prepared candle jar.

Tip: You will want to stop pouring where the candle jar changes shape

11. Straighten the wick using candle wick holder.

12. Allow the candle to harden before placing a lid.

Soy Candle Making Skincare DIY Point | 14

13. Once cooled completely, you can trim your wick to approximately ¼”.

14. Cure your candle for at least 24 - 48 hours to get the full impact of scent throw.

15. Your Soy Wax Candle is now finished and ready to burn. Enjoy!

Notes:
• You can combine different scent for different experience.
Example: apple + vanilla = apple pie ala mode
• You can adjust scent from 5 – 10% (or 12% for light scent) only.
Remember that too much scent might result to sweating or curdling of your candle and it
might be overwhelming when lighted.
• Remember, when adding color to candle wax, start with a small quantity. You can always
add more color to wax, but you cannot take it away.
• Candle Care: Cover your candle when not in use to preserve scent.
• You may notice that your soy candle has white-ish spots on it. This is a normal
characteristic of soy wax known as “frosting.” Leaving the candle uncolored will greatly
reduce the appearance of frosting.
• Wet Spots in candles are spots or
patches that occur in container
candles. They are extremely common
in container candles, but are
especially noticeable when your
candle container is glass or
transparent. Just like frost, they are an
aesthetic issue only, and have no effect
on the functionality of your candle
• You may preheat your candle jar to reduce the
occurrence of frost and wet spots.
• The candle wick needs to be "primed"-coated and saturated with wax-before it can be
used in a candle. An unprimed wick will burn out extremely fast.
