CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The study emphasizes the significance of each individual student’s learning style when it

comes to physics studies. Their academic performance is improved because to the learning

methodologies. Learning Strategies refer to Students’ self-generated thoughts, feelings, and

actions, which are systematically oriented toward attainment of their goals”. (J. Hasanbegovic,

2016). Each person’s learning process is unique, and even within the same educational setting,

not all students learn at the same speed or quality. Every learner approaches the learning process

in a unique way, making it impossible to create the ideal learning environment for everyone.

Finding out a student’s learning style reveals details about their particular preferences.

Understanding learning styles can make it simpler to construct, alter, and create curricular and

educational programs that are more effective. It can also stimulate students to enroll in these

programs and further their professional development. As a result, identifying learning

preferences is crucial for enhancing learning effectiveness. Data on how students learn and

discover solutions to problems can be obtained from studies on learning styles.

Using effective learning strategies during self-study is crucial for positive long-term

learning outcomes and academic achievement (Donker, de Boer, Kostons, Dignath Van Ewijk, &

Van Der Werf, 2014). However, most students rely on ineffective strategies, such as rereading

(Blasiman 2017, Hartwig and Dunlosky, 2012). Students are easily fooled by metacognitive

illusions and mistakenly interpret short-term performance or ease-of-processing as reliable

indicator for long-term learning (Kornell 2011, Soderstrom and Bjork, 2015). As a consequence

of this experienced-learning-versus-actual-learning-paradox, students are overconfident in their

iii

self-chosen learning strategies relative to academic performance (Winne & Jamieson-Noel,

2002) and often endorse ineffective learning strategies as being effective (McCabe, 2011,

Soderstrom and Bjork, 2015).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find learning strategies to improve the academic performance

Specifically, it will address the following problems:

1. What is the impact of learning strategies on stem students of the private catholic school?

2. Is there a significant difference of learning strategies that are used in a big way?

Hypothesis

For the statement of hypothesis, there are no significant differences in learning strategies

that are used in a big way.

Framework

Figure 1 shows the conceptual framework of the study. It is consisted with the

independent variable and dependent variable. The independent variable is the learning strategies .

It is about the factors and/or different learning strategies that can affect the academic

performance of the students . Furthermore, the dependent variable is the STEM students. The

study will be mainly focusing on the different learning strategies as well as the significant

difference on the different applications of learning strategies and its impact on academic

performance

Scope of the Study

This research focuses on learning strategies of stem students during the schedule of

Physics Subject. As a survey and reference tool, face-to-face interview will be used in this study.

The study will be conducted in both genders depending on the availability of stem students at the

time of our survey. The data will be collected from 50-70 randomly selected students who are in

stem strand and the study will be carried out in La Consolacion Collage at Bacolod City that

experience different learning strategies.

Significance of the Study

The following individuals will profit from the study’s findings in different ways:

Teachers: Teachers can gain from this study as they consider the challenges that students have in

their academic performance in order to cope up with a proactive solution to help students

succeed.

Students. On this research paper, one of the most aligned individual to benefit this study

are the students. In which they are the one who use learning strategies that can help them
v

understand the process of learning. Hence, this research paper will address the impact of

different learning styles on students and how to improve their academic performance.

Definition of Terms

In order to provide a thorough understanding of the terms used in this study, the

following definitions are provided. This is vital to make it simple for the research’s future

readers to comprehend its contents.

Learning Strategies. Techniques that learners develop as they learn. It is an individual’s

way of organizing and using a particular set of skills in order to learn content or accomplish

other tasks more effectively and efficiently in school as well as in non-academic settings

(Schumaker & Deshler, 1992).

Academic Performance/Achievement. It is the extent to which a student, teacher, or

institution has attained their short or long-term educational goals and is measured either by

continuous assessment or cumulative grade point average (CGPA) [3].

Proactive Solution. Taking charge of an issue and implementing adjustments right away. It is a

thinking about the future and focusing on the things you can control instead of all those you

cannot (Covey, 2022).

Hypothesis. States your predictions about what your research will find. It is a tentative

answer to your research question that has not yet been tested (McCombes, 2022).

Metacognitive. It refers to the processes used to plan, monitor, and assess one’s understanding

and performance (Chick, 2013).

Conceptual Framework. Used in a research paper to explain the key concepts or

variables and the relationships between them that need to be studied (Afribary, 2020).
vi

Independent Variable. Is the variable the experimenter manipulates or changes, and is

assumed to have a direct effect on the dependent variable (Mcleod, S., 2019).

Dependent Variable. Is the variable being tested and measured in an experiment, and is

‘dependent’ on the independent variable (Mcleod, S., 2019).
